Editorial review from Citysearch 4/25/2014

We have lived in Charlotte for almost 4 years and always wanted to go to this place, but were put off because they only take reservations for parties of 6 or more. Last night, the two of us decided to walk in early (about 6:00 P.M. on a Friday night, our date night) and were immediately seated. We were put in a back room containing two large, long tables and a few tables for four. One of the large tables was already filled with about 20 people, and the noise was deafening. That entire room apparently has nothing on the walls or ceiling to absorb noise. We noticed that, at one of the tables for four, people were getting up and leaving without ordering. Even worse, the place has a lot of young children who were constantly running around and getting in the way of the waitstaff which, by the way, was excellent.\r \r We started with two Ketel One on the rocks. When ordering a second round, we were told they had run out of Ketel One--at 6:15 on a Friday night. We then split a Waldhorn salad, which was good. We both had the sauerbraten with spaeztle and red cabbage. The meat was dry and the spaetzle didn't even look or taste like spaetzle. From our experience, spaetzle are dumplings pressed through a sieve.. This stuff looked and tasted more like doughy noodles. Since I love Black Forest cake, I took a piece home. It was tasteless, and the fruit center was nothing more than filler. This was represented to us as ""home made.""\r \r The owners of this place are represented as having been culinary-institute trained. We can't believe it. We have eaten at restaurants owned and operated by culinary-institute graduates and the food tasted nothing like this. We cannot, therefore, understand the rave reviews. We also cannot understand how culinary-institute graduates (if this is actually so) could serve this stuff. To each his own, I guess.\r \r more

Es ist so gut! 2/26/2011

Okay, I can't praise this place enough! We went last week for a late Valentines Day luncheon, and we were treated to the BEST German food I've had in a good long while! The German potato salad was YUMMY! The flunder (flounder) was delicious and seasoned PERFECTLY! Very reasonable prices so we were able to sneak in an appetizer AND the yummiest bread pudding I've ever wrapped my lips around! Went back today (a week later, couldn't wait!) but this time we took two of our little ones. The six-year-old gobbled up his Knackwurst. The two-year-old had noodles and cheese and GOOD GRAVY IT'S REAL CHEESE; wasn't expecting that in a kids' meal! I wound up sneaking several bites off her plate! The kids have allergies so they were very careful when they prepared the food. And what dinner would be complete without two Eisclowns! This adorable dessert had them both entranced (plus it gave us another excuse to HAVE to order another bread pudding!) A great restaurant with plenty to eat for everyone! Now, to find another excuse to go back next week! more

Sunday, noon..The first Hefeweizen is mine.Following a german tradition, it;s just is.Gitta, Tommy and her team preparing and serving the best german( southern german) food around here.Period.I come from the same area like them, and know what i am talking about. The potato salad IS true swabian german, and can compete with my mothers, which is an honor.Don't compare it with the "american" german potato salad, because you just CAN"T compare it!!.Service is awesome, Beer selection great, and if i crave german food, this is the place to go.Sunday Brunch is awesome, and after three plates of food and one desert, i am stuffed until Monday afternoon...)) more

Too pricey!! 6/11/2010

Well, I must say, from the outside I thought this would be a nice, fine dining restaurant. After all, the menu is not on the cheap side, in fact it is very expensive. First of all, if you go eat at a place like this you would expect the service to be good, well at Waldhorn, expect to be served by druggies, and hippies, this doesn't look good at all!! Also, expect to pay $20 for what you think is a veal entree, when in fact it is just bologna, it is gross!! Also, watch for the waiters trying to over sale EVERYTHING, the appetizers, drinks from the bar, etc... and don't order a alcoholic beverage that contains vodka, because you will be paying for "Stoli" vodka, when in fact you are getting brunettes vodka, yup, the crap in the plastic bottle, but they still charge you the price of a Stoli, but when you wake up with a major headache, you will know the difference. This place is not what all the hype is, the food is very low cost, with very expensive prices, and everyone there is on drugs! I don't know about you, but if I am paying those type prices, I don't want someone who smells of marijuana and cigs. waiting on me! Pros: Nothing! Cons: Paying too much for very cheaply prepared food! more

FINALLY! A little bit of Deutschland in Charlotte! 3/23/2009

I recently moved to the Charlotte area and I have been looking for authentic German Fare since arriving. Finally, I found this little gem here on city search and I could not be more pleased. The food was delicious. Honestly, I have not found a single dish yet i have not thoroughly enjoyed. The comments about the wurst platters are absolutly spot on. The knockwurst, in particular, is to die for. Its so buttery that I am getting a bit hungry talking about it now. Pros: Great foiod, friendly staff, und de BIER! Cons: Its in Pineville and I live near Harris Blvd... more

German food 1/6/2009

Waldhorn is a unique restaurant. It's decorated like a cheesy German place, but it's a really nice building and dining room. The service is always very friendly. \r \r The food is good... if you like heavy, meaty German food. Their sausage appetizer is the best thing on the menu. more

German Cuisine 3/30/2008

We have eaten at Waldhorn on several occasions. The last time we met friends at the restaurant for dinner the food was just okay. It did not have the wonderful flavor and freshness that we had remembered from the past. Service was good but the quality of food was not there. There was a large dinner party at the restaurant that night. I'd like to hope that it was just a matter of the kitchen staff being a little overwhelmed and was an isolated incident. more

This is our favorite place for any night. 9/21/2007

Brandon is our waiter of preference, he knows what we like and is always ready for a refill. All of the appetizers are great our favorite is the goat chees in phyllo. We have tried many of the dishes and all of them are great. Octoberfest is busy but a lot of fun. Their beer selection is great. Sunday brunch is a great way to try alot of their menu items. more

Great German Experience 9/2/2007

We took our family (2 adults and 3 children) on a busy Saturday night. We were able to get seated within 10 minutes. It quite noisy, but the food was great! My husband especially liked the bread. The kids all ordered Chicken Fingers, which were served with fries and the veggie of the day. They had plenty food. We also had plenty of yummy food on our plates as well. The food was cooked to perfection and I can't wait to go back and try some more off their extensive menu. Pros: Great German Fare Cons: Noisy more

German Gourmet/ slow waitress 6/22/2006

We brought 3 small children and no one batted an eye. Shown to a table and our waitress was very slow and not just Europen slow, she was harried and well....... slow. The food was very good. I had the Rouladen (I am from Louisiana so this food was a little bland for me) my hubby had the Venison (I like it better than mine) he says "it was delicious and the sauce for it was really good". The wine list was extensive I had the gewurtzraminer (sweet wine, LOVE it!) and my husband dinkle something dunkle which he proclaimed "tasty" his second beer was heffe-weizen and was extremely slow in getting to the table. They have live music after 7 on Sundays, we saw a man in true lederhosen. The bratwurst platter as an appitizer and it was very yummy, we found out that our 8 month old has a taste for sauerkraut. All in all it was a good dining experience and our tab for 2 kids plates, 1 appitizer, 2 main dishes, 1 glass wine and 2 beers was $87.00. The atmosphere was great the only thing that would have made it better is if our waitress would have been on the - and here I have to substitue round bouncy thing because it won't let me type the word b a l l more

This place was really cool. Great place to take family and friends for affordable, authentic german cusine. The wait staff is extremely knowledgeable and freindly. The selection of german beer alone is worth the trip. I would recommend it to anyone! We are going back soon. Pros: Good Value, Great Food, Excellent Beer Cons: Odd Atmosphere, Slow Lunch more
