Excellent Service AND Food 2/17/2009

The food is fantastic. The service is fantastic. The music.... fantastic. I didn't know what to think of it but decided to try it out due to the name, and uh.. pretty much just fantastic! Very afforadable as well. Pros: Our waitress was extremely helpful and very entertaining. Cons: The guy that seated us and brought menus didn't seem to know what he was doing. But that's not much of a con. :) more

Exciting, inticing menu but constantly met with disappointing food 1/27/2009

Second time visiting this restaurant and was adventurous with the tempeh sandwich, it was grilled/barbecued? Don't believe it was in-house made; lacked spices just literally tasted like ground beans and char-grill; the lemon aioli spread could not be picked up by my palate, mediocre bread ok grilled veggies at least they weren't super oily. My co-diner was happy enough with his burger though the fries weren't warm and seemed old. The recommended spanish coffee had to be returned. Don't really know if it was the coffee or what but it tasted bad, like old coffee and alcohol, looked watery not very well done. Swapped it for a hot chocolate with 151 and brandy that was decent. I want to go back and try the crepes however. I thought horoscope decorations were smidge tacky but stage and bar area looked like it could be a real fun place in the evening Pros: wide variety of menu items Cons: failed to deliver great food more

Great environment, staff and Live Music! 1/26/2009

Last Weekend my boyfriend and I stumbled into Virgo and Pisces. The environment is relax and the staff was welcoming. We sat down much to our surprise just before the Live Music began. (I guess every Friday and Saturday they do live music.) The music was an unexpected treat as a beautiful cellist, Ashia (i think), captivated us with her voice and skill. Dinner was great, and Virgo and Pisces menu has a little something for everyone. In addition, some very delicious and unique choices, including an extensive happy hour menu that includes large portions of food, and drinks for under $5. more

Best of everything 9/11/2008

I was taken there for my birthday dinner by my husband (I'm virgo, he is pisces). I instantly fell in love with the place! The bar and the outdoor seating is so relaxed and inviting. The dining room is so romantic and inviting. The staff was awesome. So down to earth. We got there during happy hour-- great drink and food prices. Everything was good priced. Loved the meatloaf. Will definently go there again. There was nothing that I disliked! Will def tell my friends about this gem of a place! Pros: So many... hard to name them all Cons: absolutely none more

Rude waiter, great patio dining, food is okay 8/16/2008

We stopped by for lunch for patio dining. The menu looked great, I was so excited to have a great lunch. I mistakenly tried to order a dinner item. The waiter was ""kind enough"" to point out that the menu states not once, but twice that what I tried to order was a dinner item. Okay, good enough. I ordered a sandwich which was marginal, and a salad, which turned out to be chopped iceberg lettuce. Ugh! My husband got a burger which was great, and the only reason I gave this place 2 stars. Rude service, subpar food. Will not go back. more

Exceptional Happy hour food 4/9/2008

This place was not busy when I came for happy hour. Which is very surprising, since the food, portions and the price was phenomenal. The food took my mind off work and I was able to unwind with a pomegranate martini, I hope to go back soon to enjoy these tasty treats and relax. Pros: Happy hour, plenty of seating and service Cons: No parking more

Best Scallop Cigar Ever! 3/8/2008

One of the greatest happy hour deals in town. If you have kids there is no children's menu but they can order off of the happy hour food list for service in the dinning room , or they will even do fruit plates for you. The staff makes you feel at home. The weekend breakfast menu is one of the few menus I know of in town that someone avoiding greasy spoon brunch food has so many choices for dinning pleasure. Usually, I'm stuck with a couple of choices. I've been at least 20 times. Typically, on the weekend the crepes are wonderful the home fries are not so great, red potato I think I usually sub fruit. The dish that they serve the cigar in looks like a big ashtray, the oil they fry with is fresh if you like deep fried choices. Drinks are cheep and come fast. Pros: Good deals, lots of choices, really nice staff Cons: They are not yet consitant with the quality of their offerings more

Best of the lesser known happy hours in Portland 1/23/2008

This quiet, elegant (but never snobby) bar on 21st is my new favorite. I discovered it about a month ago and have been back 3 times with different friends each time. My friends have been delighted and eager to bring their friends to this true find. Most of the happy hour items are about $3, are artful and simply delicious and the service outstanding. Rumor has it that the Mercury recently panned it. All I can say is, girl...you gotta give this place another try. Go during a happy hour. Try a quiet Tuesday evening, ask Steven for his signature drink. A simply sublime martini that includes saki, coconut juice and lime. For the rest of you...forget the reviews, go find out for yourself. Pros: Price, atmosphere, tasty small plates Cons: Parking (as always in NW) more

Fabulous 1/21/2008

Walking down NW 21st at 6:15pm on Saturday looking for a place with Happy hour my wife and I stumbled into this place. We at in the bar as they had a Happy hour that went til 7pm. We tried a variety of things, the Scallop Cigar was by far the best. All the Happy hour food was reasonably priced and Martinis were only $4. We were blown away at the food qaulity and prices for Happy hour. We will be back. Also a plus, is their happy hour goes til 7pm, even on Saturdays. Pros: Great Happy hour more

One word...excellent 11/19/2007

The service at V&P was excellent. Prompt seating, delicious food. The scallop cigars were perfect. With happy hour prices ($3, 2 for $6, or 3 for $9) I couldn't believe the quality. I had eaten at McCormick's for my birthday, and to my surprise V&P had them beat with the cedar smoked salmon. Everything including the seasonal spinach was obviously fresh. To top off a wonderful meal the coconut creme brulee was the perfect palate cleanser. If you support local restaurants who are up and coming I suggest making V&P a Portland establishment. Pros: great food, great service, relexed atmosphere more

All around excellent! 10/18/2007

Out on a whim, tried this establishment out. Needless to say, it is extremely impressive. Great, friendly service with a smile, and offers a wide array of fine, worldy wines and classy cocktails to enjoy. Completely unpretentious experience, and exceptionally classy... and has a real flavor of Portland to it. Exceptional business. Needs more of a buzz... this place is top notch! Pros: All around excellent. Highly recommended. Service is top-notch and classy. more

Great Small Plates For Great Value 8/16/2007

We were visiting Portland from Los Angeles and stopped into this place because we'd heard about their ""small plate"" menu. We seek out restaurants that have a reputation for good Tapas, and although this place does describe itself as a ""tapas"" restaurant, they have a fun variety of small plates for unbelievablly reasonable prices. We sat in thier bar area, which was very laid-back and atmospheric and were waited on by Sean the bartenter, who was very cool and nice. The apps and wine were both delicious, but left us wishing they had more variety and selection. They have a large and somewhat confusing menu, and we think they should re-vamp it to specialize in ""small plate"" selections which is so much fun and seems to e a growing trend. But all in all, it was a lovely experience. We'd definitely go back! Pros: Great food, great prices, cool atmosphere. Cons: Not enough small plate selection. more

amazing happy hour, brunch, organic, outdoor seating 6/12/2007

Virgo and Pisces just extended their happy hour to 7, lowered their prices, and the result is one of the most amazing happy hour deals in NW. The truffle oil fries are to die for, as are the scallop cigars. The food is often local, organic, and that rare marriage of healthy (well, maybe not the fries!) and decadent. The atmosphere is nurturing, a little artsy, classy, and with the outdoor seating--hard to beat. They even have happy hour on the weekend, also till 7!! I met the owner, Tony, when I was there and he is truly one of the most down-to-earth, caring people I've met in the restaurant industry. (He's the Virgo of the Virgo/Pisces). Check it out--you won't leave disappointed. more

Great food and service 6/10/2007

Love coming here for drinks, snacks or for dinner. Service as always been good and the food is excellent. I especially enjoy sitting outside on nice days with my dog. Great place to people watch. Pros: good food with outdoor seating Cons: inside decor is tacky more

Great Brunch! 6/5/2007

Whether you want healthy or not-so-much... Virgo and pisces offers a wide variety of different flavors, textures and types of breakfast foods. The blueberry mascarpone french toast is the closest thing you could get to eating blueberry cheesecake for breakfast- it's delicious, if you're into that : ) Pros: ambience, free donut with coffee Cons: maybe not the fastest coffee/water refills? more

Fills a void 5/16/2007

Looking for a decent place to dine without spending triple digits, we decided to give the new spot in the neighborhood a try - Virgo & Pisces. On a slow Monday night, the dining room didn't appear to be open, so we nestled into a booth in the bar area with a great people watching view of 21st street. I needed to specify that we were in the bar because I've found that bar service typically differs from dining room service. My only gripe about our experience is that the service was SO casual. We had to ask for several items while staff members were hanging out watching the giant tv. I know, I know, we were in the bar, but still - you'd think a restaurant with pretentious wine offerings (Silver Oak, at this place?) and an agreeable little menu would try to match their offerings to their service.... but.... not so. We had decent quality meals with sports-bar-esque service. The food was fine - nothing absolutely knocked my socks off, but on return visits I'd certainly order my Thai-style cioppino again, and my companion's salmon with rice was enjoyable though there was nothing particularly special about it. The food was all reasonably priced, well presented, and tasted as expected. I'm sure we'll be back, but I'm crossing my fingers for some polish in the service department. Pros: Location, decent value Cons: Bar service too casual more

Elegant, classy, great food & service 5/12/2007

My friend and I walked into VP by chance as we wandered down 21st. Wow, what a pleasant surprise! This place deserves a writeup in WWeek. The food was excellent (good portion, flavorful, nice presentation, flawless - or at least the dishes we ordered), the service great (attentive, courteous, but not overbearing), the music well-selected (unintrusive flowing light jazz), and the environment wonderful (elegant and classy). It's not a ""cheap eat"" spot but not exorbitantly pricey for a place like this. Will definitely come back. Pros: food, service, ambience more

A Must Try 3/25/2007

What a delightful environment and ambiance. This quaint NW 21st & Glisan location offers some of the most unique flavors in every carefully composed dish. I tried the King Salmon which came atop a 5"" burnt cedar plank. The last time I enjoyed that smokey blend, was at the Indian village on Blake Island near Seattle. ""The true preparation method"" and so moist and tender. My dinner party took pleasure in the Meatloaf, Chicken, and Linguini with Clams. Don't go here in a rush. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy every bite and savor the unique blend of Northwest and Asian flavors. Be sure to save room for dessert. They've created the most sinful delights. In all honesty, the prices should be much higher than they are asking; but the owner humbly refuses to spoil any customer's experience. I can't forget to mention the serving staff; professional, cultured, and radiant. I can't wait for my next return visit. more

Fantastic food and drinks! 2/27/2007

My husband and I have been waiting for VP to open, finally got a chance to visit. What a great place for food, drinks and conversation. Their scallop cigar appetizer is to die for. All their small plates are good size and cheap, we are still working on eating thru the appeitizer menu. They have a few big screen TVs in the bar side, and yet the atmosphere is very classy, not like a sports bar at all. But if you want to watch a game and have some good food without inhailing smoke, this might be a great place for you. We will be back more and often! Pros: food, atmosphere, drink, service Cons: no parking...yet more

Great food, very well priced drinks all with flair and style 2/20/2007

I enjoyed this place immensly. The food is excellent and the drinks are exceptional. The staff is very friendly as well as attentive to my dining needs. Beautiful artwork adorns the entire place. Very relaxing and a great place to take a date and have a romantic dinner. Food was presented in a artful way and with style. Wine selection as well as spirit selections were very plentiful. It was right down from the movie theature as well to catch the festival of animation.Right down from the Blue Moon . I'd like to go back and have a warm drink on a blustery day as I can watch all the 21st avenue activity. Great people watching location ! And the deserts! The chocalette torte was almost euphoric to me I as I havent' tasted chocalette so flavorfull in years! Can't beat the strawberries with this on the side. Its bout time that NW 21st Ave. has someplace as classy as this establishment I could tell that the staff and management really do care about my dining experience. Parking situation should be expected as all of the eateries and businesses on in the Northwest 21st and 23rd Avenues and areas. I can tell you for sure, that its Well worth a little extra time to find a parking spot, don't believe me? Go try it for yourself! more
