BBQ for people who don't know BBQ 7/30/2010

This is a great way to better understand the meaning of disappointment. I have no idea why people flock to this place, other than they don't know what BBQ is supposed to taste like. If you've had real BBQ in the south or the South West, you're going to yawn at the flavor (bland spice, so-so sauce that you often have to pour yourself over overcooked red meat and dry pulled pork on an uninspired menu), harrumph at the portions (only the ribs are big enough, but they're inarftully sitting on a little dish in a way that recalls hospital presentation) and the lame variety of bland, small-ish sides (booooo-riiiing), before you open your eyes at the prices (not extravagent, but too high for what you get and what you're promised). This is the most over-rated restaurant in Brookline, probably in Boston. Fool us thrice, shame on us. Don't bother. There's some really excellent food across the street, so don't bother with this place. Pros: Fun if kitsche atomosphere, Cons: Bland, dry, uninspired food, lame service more

Great Eats! 6/25/2006

I have been to the Village Smokehouse several times and it is always a treat. The cornbread at the beginning of the meal is great, as are the beans that are included with dinner entrees. While sometimes the service could be better, the fun decor and great food always makes me return to this restaurant. Pros: Cute decor, great food, lots of choices Cons: Less than stellar service more

Not really BBQ 5/15/2006

We are from Southern Californis and used to Lucille's BBQ. We tried the Village Smokehouse and were extremely disappointed. Our BBQ food was served without BBQ sauce on it; we had to add our own at the table. The selection was limited in my opinion. The salad was wilted. Won't go back. Pros: location, fast seating, very casual Cons: food, service more

Below Average Food 4/20/2006

My husband had the BBQ Pulled Pork and it was very dry. I had the ribs and they were pretty tender but the sauce was nothing to rave about. The mashed potatoes were instant which was a surprise to me at a bbq restaurant. They were not good! The cornbread was very good. This was my first visit and overall I'd say I was disappointed. more

Needs Salt 12/31/2005

I'm from Texas, and have been to this restaurant twice. Although the beef is smoked, it is bland. Must not stay on the smoker very long. Brisket and ribs were both tasteless and needed salt. I brought a sample of the ribs to work, and two co-workers thought it was pretty lackluster as well. The ribs looked good, but didn't taste like barbeque. Adding a sea gelatenous sauce dosen't make it barbeque, either. There is a smoker there, and the meat could be really good if they would add salt or some seasonings and spices and actually smoke the meat long enough to get a flavor. They finish them off on the ""grill"" and it just doesn't work. ...... Pros: good atmosphere, good service Cons: tasteless meat more

Great BBQ food at a great price 12/22/2005

I would highly suggest the Village Smokehouse to anyone that likes BBQ food, especially Steak and ribs (my favorite). Food is cooked over the fire and tastes delicious. The ambiance is great, service is friendly and prompt, and the price is just right. If you go on a busy Friday/Saturday night, you can expect a little wait, but it's worth it. The menu offers many types of food, such as chicken, sausage, ribs, steak, etc, so there's something for everyone. more

Decent Food but not so decent service 10/15/2005

I went to try out this place because of this site and it's reviews. I was expecting something great but instead I only received decent food. I was on the go so I could not dine in, instead I ordered take out and the service was not that great at all. The young lady who handled my order was not very warm at all. She had a little edge to her word and looks that I did not appreciate. more

Ribs Fall Off The Bone 6/15/2005

We have been to the Smokehouse many times and it is always consistent. Beginning with the yummy cornbread, the food is always delicious. Baby back ribs that fall off the bone, tender chicken, sweet baked beans and creamy mashed optatoes. Prices are very reasonable and the bar is always crowded. A great neighborhood place for that night you cheat on your diet. Pros: location, ribs, prices more

If you like dry brisket... 6/10/2005

This is a hamburger joint that serves a facsimile of BBQ. The sides are ok, but the meat is not. If you must go, stick to the ribs...skip the beef...the pulled pork is an afterthought. more

BEST BBQ IN TOWN 5/31/2005

I HAVE BEEN GOING THERE FOR YEARS. THE TEXAS DEATH SANDWICH IS ONE OF THE BEST SANDWICHES I""VE EVER HAD. THE RIBS ARE SMOKED TO PERFECTION AND THE SAUCE IS SECOND TO NONE. THE IDEAL APPETIZER IS THE STUFFED JALEPENOS. THE BRISKET IS AWESOME ITS A GREAT SPOT TO TAKE TH FAMILY. THE PICTURES ON THE WALLS AND ATMOSPHERE ADD TO THE FUN. Pros: tasty, fresh, fun more

Fabulous Barbecue 5/31/2005

We took friends from South Carolina here for dinner. They see themselves as BBQ experts and loaded up on the ribs! They loved it! Burgers are great. Chicken and pork chops great! Mashed potatoes are a must! Great meal! Highly recommended! Pros: great atmosphere, friendly staff, appropriate decor more

Strange sides 4/29/2005

I've always been puzzled by their choices of what to put alongside their BBQ. It almost seems like home until your plate arrives and I look at what they've put alongside the meat. It's then that I become despondent and realize that I'm still in Boston. more

Boot Stompin'Fun! 10/21/2004

We had Dad's 80th birthday bash in the western style function room. Received rave reviews from our 50 guests about food and atmosphere! Management was very accommodating. A memorable time was had by all! Pros: Authentic Texas BBQ, ample portions, fun atmosphere more

THE BEST! 3/15/2004

You're home the second you walk in---Barbecue is excellent---fair price---feels like a good episode of Maverick--- Brookline Village location great if you're on your way to or coming from Downtown! Leave room for Dessert!!!!!! (if you can) Pros: Great Barbecue, Good Value, Great Atmosphere more

Where's the smoke? 3/26/2003

Based on one visit, I'd probably go back, but would only order the ribs. Grilled chicken was fine, nothing great or bad. Steak was pretty good, but not remarkable. Ribs were, as mentioned, very good, almost falling off the bone, nice grilled taste. But I can't omit my great disappoinment with the brisket. It was just cheap roast beef, no smoke taste at all, no blackened outer layer, no spice. I was so....let down. Atmosphere is as close to Texas as Boston will probably have, service was fast and efficient, but the brisket... more

A must not miss! 1/20/2003

This hole in the wall restaurant had the best ribs and barbecue ever! The food was cheap cheap cheap and the portions were huge! Can't wait to go again! more

As good as anything in Texas 1/8/2003

My inlaws live in Dallas & I've had some great BBQ there. When they came to town I could confidently bring them to the Village Smoke House! They were skeptical, I ordered 1st & when the Texas Hog came out (my favorite) they were hooked!!! more

The Best Ribs!! 1/5/2003

I love this place, I love the atmosphere, the food and the drinks. The ribs are the best I've ever had. And the barbecue sauce is very tasty though a little sweet. My service has always been very prompt and courteous. It is a very small place so it's best to show up a little early. Pros: food, service, drinks Cons: a little pricey, tough parking more

better than adam's rib 12/30/2002

I have been to Texas, Memphis, and St. Louis, village smoke house are the best I have ever tasted. The beef ribs are unequeled. The best treat for the average eater is order the texas sized and strap in. Pros: beef ribs, easy to find, good attiude Cons: seats to close, a lttle pricey more
