All you can eat Indian Buffet. 12/10/2011

All you can eat Indian Buffet. The food is good, NOT great, but good. It is very filling, the $8 price is quite reasonable for lunch. They are very conveniently located in downtown Berkeley. The food selection is somewhat limited. Not the best food, but OK. It is a good place to go if you want a lot to eat. more

ViceRoy is an awful restaurant for lunch !!! 10/11/2005

I don't recommend this restaurant for lunch at all ! The buffet lunch is way too salty in all of their dishes. The spinach stew and the rest are very runny, as if they just add water and salt to save money. The staff just ignore you and chat in their language as if they are at home. No wonder there is nobody there for lunch when I went there recently at noon, the peak lunch time in Berkeley. Cons: food, service more

Thumbs way up! 10/6/2005

We had a great time there. I went there with my family. We were promptly seated, were greeted by a very curtious waiter. The Food was great and the service was good, I highly recomend it to everyone. Its the best indian food I had in the bay area so far. Chicken Tikka masala and Lamb Palak are really superb. Pros: Food, service, ambiance more

Overpriced, poor service 7/30/2005

Silverware looked really dirty. Found hair in the saffron rice. Rice was not fresh. Lamb masala was too salty; we picked out all the burned- black onions. Vegetable dish in the thali tasted like it had been burned. Kheer was scooped from container sitting out on the buffet and tasted bland. Heard other table complain about mixed up orders. Long wait after meal even though we were only 1 of 2 customers, and after dessert waited long so just got up to pay the check. Place is large but would not recommend for the food and service, considering it's overpriced ($10-22). more

Poor 6/17/2005

The chicken dish on the buffet was so salty that it could barely be eaten. And when's the last time you encountered a restaurant that didn't offer a child's price for the buffet? The owner says that paying full price for the child makes up for the people that come in and eat too much. Well forget you! We ain't coming back. more

The Worst Service 9/1/2004

The first time, a year ago, we were seated promptly. The place was not busy even though it was Friday night. After waiting over 15 minutes and no waiter showed up, we gave up and left. I was in the area with a friend the other day around 10:30pm, and gave them another try. They welcomed us in. We ordered and they brought our food; 15 minutes later, at 11:00pm, the waiter and the cook told us that we have to leave because the restaurant closes at 11:00pm. We were not even half way through our meal. They just kept repeating ""You have to leave"" in the rudest manner imaginable. There was no warning that the restaurant would close or we have to leave at 11:00pm when we came in half an hour earlier. This was the worst service I've ever received. The food was only mediocre. Stay away. more

Please? Please? 2/16/2003

When first walking into Viceroy, one wonders how they stay in business when it's seemingly always only half-full (see, I'm positive!). After dining at the other Indian restaurants in the area (and there are many), it becomes obvious that it is due mostly to their random location at Shattuck and University, more in between traveled areas than part of one. The kind folks who run Viceroy are always happy to see familiar faces, and because of the good food and great service, patrons will find that they, themselves are happy to return. Pros: Tasty, Inexpensive, Very courteous Cons: Cheesy, but good kind more

decent food, slightly overpriced 8/14/2002

Viceroy has some very good dishes and some mediocre dishes. My friends and I enjoy the lamb masala, the tikka masala, the tandoori chicken, and the strange (but usually tasty) rice pudding. The lunch buffet is a pretty good deal, but there are only about 8 actual entrees, so don't be fooled by the claim to 50 (?) offerings on the sign outside. The lunch buffet is $7.99 and the dinner will run you around $12-15 total. Pros: good lunch buffet, large dining area, above average food Cons: strange ambiance, slightly overpriced more
