Val's Burgers is THEE BEST EVER! 8/5/2009

Val's Burgers is a great homey environment and everything I have ordered there has been very good, hot and filling! My family and I love going there for a good wholesome burger as well as other items on the menu. I would high recommend Val's for any family to enjoy a meal together. The servers are just wonderful! more

Poor Excuse For A Burger...Plus They Charge Extra For A Tomato Slice! 5/6/2009

I'm so surprised to read any good reviews on Val's Burgers! I had a Mama burger and paid extra for a slice of tomato and it was a poor excuse for a burger. In-N-Out burgers are way better, cheaper and include a slice of tomato for free. DH ordered the linguica and eggs breakfast and it was awful. He didn't even finish it and he usually finishes all his meals!\r \r It's cash only here and I'm warning you now to stay away from their bathrooms. We're never coming back here again. more

What a HUGE Disappointment...In-N-Out Has Better Burgers! 4/30/2009

I had a Mama burger, medium, and was surprised that Val's charges extra for a slice of tomato, but whatever. DH ordered the linguica and eggs breakfast. The burger was ""okay"" but the linguica was awful...DH didn't even finish it and he is not one to waste food. Service was ""okay"" and the owner Val seemed cheerful as he took our cash (no credit cards accepted) but their bathrooms horrified me...and I'll stop right there. Honestly, an In-N-Out burger is better than Val's...and at least their bathrooms are clean, a slice of tomato is included and they do take credit cards. Cons: Awful linguica, tomato slice is not free w/burger, cash only more

This is the spot! 1/8/2009

No where could you find a better place for a good hamburger. Big ones too. Onion rings are so,so good! Try it, this is the spot. Lunch time has the line out the door 12-1. Parking lot small . Very cool people work here and the service is down to earth. Try it! I give this place A+ Pros: good food Cons: small parking area more

Hands Down Best Burger Joint!!! 11/12/2008

i love this place. best time to go is around 3 pm. the lunch rush is over and it's before the dinner rush. by far the best place to get a burger and i've tried many places. not just for a burger, but definitely try the steak sandwich, add some american cheese and tomato and forget claim jumper steaks!!!! shakes are excellent and pie a la mode is great. but if this is your first time, make sure you order the mama burger and guys, don't try the papa burger....it'll ruin it!!! if you think you can eat the papa, you're better off getting a mama burger and splitting the jr steak sandwich with a friend. Pros: the food is excellent, once in awhile you'll run into a celebrity in there Cons: about 20 parking spaces more

BEST COOKED TO ORDER BURGER 5/24/2008

I have been going to Val's for 26 years now and I do understand the well deserved raves that they get. I have yet to eat a whole mama burger; so you do get your moneys worth. I order my burger medium rare which helps when you reheat it the next day. If you ask for the fries to be crispy they will make them that way. I have never had a greasy burger or rude service. It is however not like me to eat in choosing to go home with my meal because it is generally so crowded. Call in your order and they will have it read. just remember they are closed on Suns. and Mons. In n Out burgers doesn't have anything on Val's they are two totally different venues. so go judge for yourself! Ciao' Pros: Cook to order burgers and fries Cons: usually extremely busy more

Great Food Lousy Service 11/15/2007

My family and I have been eating at Val's for years. Best burgers bar none! Old time authentic diner decor can't be beat. Too bad the service has me wondering if I'll spend another dollar there again. I took a business associate from out of town to Val's for lunch today. As usual, the food was great, unfortunately the service was insulting and rude. Before we were even through with our food the waitress was giving us the bum's rush! Not like we were nursing a cup of coffee for an hour, we had ordered the works, burgers, salad, shakes, fries. This rude bi$%& started pressing us to finish and started clearing out our unfinished food before we could even get it down our throats! Even after I made a remark to her regarding her attitude and the fact that we weren't done, she just started mumbling and shaking her head as she walked away. Think I'll let my wallet do the talking next time I decide where to eat! more

WHY?! Unappetizing and greasy. 11/10/2007

I REALLY don't understand the rave reviews of this place. I tried really hard to like it, returned a total of 6 times over a year (yes, I'm stubborn), and nope, nasty across the board. This is a greasy experience, both the restaurant and food. I love my burgers, but this is not the place to go. Sub-par ? (often cold) tasteless patties slapped on small wonderbread buns, an oily mountain of (often cold) grilled onions on the side (extra $); limp, (often cold) fries....how sad when even the shakes don't taste good. In-N-Out is better than this place, for a fraction of the price. more

THE Bay Area Burger Joint 7/25/2007

Val's is more than just a good burger, it's an experience. I've been going for 30+ years and still stop in a couple of times each year since I've moved to the North Bay. Old style diner. We actually drove out a couple times (about an hour drive) while my wife was pregnant because she craved their pickle slices! Burgers are the best you'll find anywhere and cooked exactly as ordered. Fries and onion rings are great. Everyone raves about the shakes, but if they were served anywhere else they would be considered average. This being said, they do go great with the burger...and yes I do the Papa medium well w/cheese and tomato. Some folks complain about the wait, but it's worth it. Some complain about the noise or service...get over it. It's a diner and operates just as a diner should: Sit em, stuff em and get em out. Food is fantastic, portions are generous & well priced and I've yet to have bad service in probably 100+ visits. Pros: Diner atmosphere, portions & prices Cons: Parking if you don't know the area more

GOOD. 11/18/2005

I have only been to this place once but i'd have to say it was pretty darn good. The burgers were not greasy like most fast foods. Everything was fresh the tomatoes, onions, pickels etc. You added the tomatoes, etc. yourself so that was cool that you had a choice. The onion rings were really good too. The place was very vintage so that was very nice to see that some places still stand. Overall great place. Kinda small tho. PROS: great food CONS: small place more

Best burger place in the area 8/25/2005

Vals has been providing quality and delicious burgers for decades. Throughout their operation, they've been owned by the same family -- being passed down from father, to his son who now operates it. You'll know him when you walk in, because he's the guy with the handlebar mustache that's usually working behind the register. The burgers here are awesome. You have your choice of 3 sizes -- the normal sized baby, the large sized mama, and the humongous papa burger. Cheese, bacon and tomatoes cost extra. But each table has ketchup, mustard, mayo, pickles, and onions to dress your burger with, and lettuce is included with your burger. To accompany your burger, get a basket of fries. One basket will easily feed 2-4 people. These are thick, steak-cut fries. If you like your fries with a lot of potato in the center, you'll probably like these. And you absolutely can't pass on one of their milk shakes. These are by far the best milkshakes I've havd anywhere. They are thick, creamy, and ric more

BEST MILK SHAKES IN THE EAST BAY 6/30/2005

This place is great!!!! They have the best milk shakes ever. Prices are great for a considerable amount of food. It all tastes so YUMMY!!! Definately a good place when you're in the mood for a good old fashioned burger, fies and milk shake. more

...made a believer out of me! 6/29/2005

I thought, ""Yeah, everyone thinks they grew up with the world's greatest burgers and shakes,"" so I went in with a chip on my shoulder. Was I ever wrong. Go there and worship their burgers and shakes and enjoy a step back to home-town American ambiance from a simpler time. These are really the best burgers and shakes in the Bay Area. Nation's is great, but in a different league. Pros: Great food, Lots of food, Great price Cons: Cash only more

hidden east bay jem 5/29/2005

Old fashion burger, Giant and Juicy, with a old school atmosphere. Reminds me of an something you would see out of Happy Days. Best tasting burgers I have ever found in the East Bay. Friendly staff and huge portions. Pros: food, atmosphere, huge portions Cons: little noisy more

A Classic 5/24/2005

I've been coming here for burgers since I was five years old, when I used to order the baby burger (1/3 pound), I've sinced moved on the the momma burger 2/3 pounds the recipe hasn't changed a bit. Big, juicy handmade bugers cooked to order with huge baskets of steak fries and some of the best shakes and malts in town. As a matter of fact I think most of the staff has been around since my first visit 20 some years ago as well. Can get busy, but the turnaround is quick and the food is worth the wait if you're in the mood for an all-american burger. Pros: burgers, shakes Cons: loud, lots of kids more
