Editorial review from Citysearch 5/8/2013

VCA Rotherwood Animal Hospital is by far the best veterinary office in the Newton/Brookline/Cambridge/Boston area. I have three dogs who have been seeing Dr. Tamara Kremer Mecabell since 2009. Each of my dogs has their own special issues; Dr. Kremer has always been sensitive to their needs, recommending the best treatment to make sure that the dog fully recovers. I have also used VCA Rotherwood for dog emergencies, in fact it's the first place I go when one of my dogs has an emergency. The staff are extremely experienced when dealing with an animal emergency, making sure there is no wait time whatsoever (even at Angell, you'll have a bit of a wait time) and that the animal is seen immediately by a vet. In regard to regular visits, including yearly physicals/shots, I have always found the receptionists, veterinary technicians, kennel staff and of course the veterinarians to be highly professional. Each individual at VCA Rotherwood is highly educated in their field and there is always a high level of compassion towards animals and their owners. Why anyone wouldn't choose VCA Rotherwood for their pets is beyond me. As a pet owner, VCA Rotherwood in Newton, Massachusetts is the only place to go for my furry family members. more

Dr. J. Klaus almost killed my cat! 1/23/2012

This is the worst clinic I had ever seen! My cat had a urinary obstruction. Dr Klaus spent 10 days and more than 2000 dollars (from my pocket) and was not ablu get over this proble. My cat almost die because of endless catheters and IV fluids (and nothing else!). The other clinic fixed this problem for $70 and 12 hours! Pros: null Cons: null more

Dr Kremer rocks 8/24/2011

Dr. Kremer has been a lifeline for my furry family. We have 4 pets, and she has been so caring and professional, helping us always find cost effective ways to give the best care. She is always available, often giving me advice over email or the phone when it was hard to get to the office. more

Expensive and superficial 9/3/2010

One of my main regrets was that I selected this place for my dog's care. Their services are expensive and they do as many tests as they can. Worst yet, they do not do the tests that matter most and cost the least!! more

OMG... Animal Hospital ??? They didn't want to put a muzzle and give regular shots to my partially tranquillized dog. What kind of responsible professionals ? Waste of time and money. I got to find somewhere else who are equipped and can deal with animals. more

do not bring your pet here 1/22/2009

My cat died in their care following a routine neutering. they decided to stop treatment in the morning, and never called me. when he came home covered in blood, they said he had hurt his claw. He really had torn sutures when the hospital staff allowed him to get out of his cage unsupervised. They decided to let him sit in a cage by himself for hours before i picked him up. I was never told what happened until after he died, and I threatened reporting them to the board. Do not take your pet here, please. more

Their facility is very nice and the hours are good with evenings and Saturdays available. It is very convenient if you happen to live in Newton or Needham. more

lack of attention led to congestive heart failure in my cat 11/12/2007

I took my 10 year old Burmese cat in for a routing visit. First I was sold $200 of lab work, then I was told she needed her teeth cleaned (another $300+), but since she had a heart murmur she needed an echocardiogram $700 to see if she was healthy enough for anesthesia. The echocardiogram showed enlargement of her left atrium. In addition her lab work showed renal problems. The dental cleaning was optional and an alternative procedure was available. Dr Harpster told us it was fine to have her undergo anesthesia. Two weeks after that she had congestive heart failure and was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy. (An enlarged left atrium is a very common symptom of this disease. Congestive heart failure in cats with this condition is generally triggered by stress - anesthesia being #1.) We took her to Angell Memorial and spent another $3,000 trying to have her stabilized although the prognosis for a cat with this problem is < 1 year. After 3 weeks during which time she continued to deteriorate, we had to have her euthanized. Pros: parking Cons: Quality of care, knowledgeabilty of staff, motivated by money more than what the pet needs more
