It was around 9 month a go, Uzu used to be the great sushi place to go to.. what has happened? Pros: cozy Cons: became dull

good place for sushi in town - which is hard to find! Pros: spicy scallop roll more

very good sushi! 11/10/2009

I'm addicted to their spicy scallop sushi. It is one of the few places around that I trust for good sushi. more

Climbing to the top 3/14/2009

i beg to differ. From when the new owners first opened the restaurant, they have improved dramatically. I've talked to and seen the sushi man at work. I've also had the pleasure of seeing him pick out the fish when the delivery guy came in; he takes his time and makes sure that he picks the freshest fish available, sending the bad ones back asking for new ones. I've been a regular at this restaurant for quite some time now and yes, when the new owners opened, they needed some time to adapt. However, with their new styles, added options on the menu (which are fantastic by the way), and added desserts, this restaurant may be catching up to the previous owner, if not surpassing him. Quote from the sushi man: ""WE NEVA USE BAD FEESH!"" Pros: Good food. Fresh. Perfect place for a romantic night out Cons: A bit small, but the server is only one call away more

it's a dud !! 1/27/2009

all the great rating about this small place has dissapeared with previous owners, i was a regular at this place from opening of ""UZU"" few years back., and I realized that week ago was my last visit to UZU. Freshness of sashimi and portions became small and when ever we ask for o-toro, we been given one with brownish tint and oder of dead fish. What has happened to uzu. If new owner don't shape up and care about customer they have they will be left with a ""dud"" of a sushi joint. Pros: easy to get seating Cons: getting worse by day more

Small but powerful 11/17/2008

Prompt seating, good sushi. I can think of a few sushi places that I would rank a bit higher but Uzu is everything you look for in a restaurant. Good food, very fresh. Good service and great location. Pros: Location more

Just below upscale atmosphere with good service and BYOB option 7/13/2008

The atmosphere at Uzu is great a bit smaller than some sushi bars I've been to but also less personable than others in the sense of being righ tup on the bar, and the staff is very polite and considerate. This was my first time at this Sushi bar. Which was tonight when I went out on a date, I order the Uzu Regular my date the Philly Roll. The Miso Soup (comes with the UR)was with out question the best I have ever had, and I am not much of a soup person. Pros: Most of the experience was great Cons: Like I said, sushi was a bit warm, but I'd try again to form a more rounded opinion more

Best sushi in the region 4/11/2008

wife and i are foodies..go out to dinner at least 2-3 times/week..had been to morimoto (too pricey -- but great drinks, especially in the lounge), pod (great if your kids want to keep changing the lights in the pod), haru (why is that place still open?), etc. Pros: The food, the price Cons: wish they had more space more

Very good except the order minimum is ridiculously high. How can one little person eat 20 dollars worth of sushi? more

Super ""yummy"" rolls and sushi 8/29/2007

my friends and I went to Uzu for the first time and had best rolls and sushi in town. Uzu will be our destination spot for our sushi. ""Wow"" fireman special was just so good I can almost taste it writing this review. Pros: just best food in town more

Best exotic and upscale sushi in town 8/29/2007

I went with my wife on her birthday and ordered Omakase dinner for $50 per person and had best dinner ever. Chef offered imported suzuki from Japan in ponzu sauce and also sashimi in different sauces amazed our pallets. Five course dinner was just perfect and carried wonderful taste back home, which made us to make reservation for dinner for following saturday. Great experience! Pros: best best sushi in town Cons: non more

Long wait!! =( 8/27/2007

I work a block away from this place so my co-worker and I decided to give it a try for lunch. As stated by others this place is *small*, but since it was empty we didn't really mind. The soup and salad was good and I was really looking forward to my entree (assortment of sushi and maki a la cart)...and waited we did!!! It took over 45 minutes for us to get the food even though we were the only customers in the place!!! Reviews here suggested that there may be a wait, but talk about an understatement. The waitress, apologetically enough, disappeared for 15 minutes at a time and left me wanting better service. Pros: Fresh food prepared well Cons: Takes forever! more

Wait... and Wait.... and Wait.... 7/24/2007

Based on what I read on citysearch, I decided to put part of my summertime bonus to good use and take my girl for a Friday night date at Uzu. After all, with so many glowing reviews here, I figured it HAD to be excellent. A couple of sourpuss reviews weren't going to scare us away! I made reservations two days in advance for Friday night. Pros: good sushi, hip area of town Cons: slow service, tiny room, somewhat pricey more

Best Sushi and Most Creative Rolls in the City! - Great Owners - Very Nice 7/13/2007

Uzu is the best Sushi in Philadelphia! I have not eaten Sushi anywhere else since the first time I went there (and I eat Sushi 3 times per week and have been to every other sushi restaurant in the city) Pros: Rolls , Miso Soup, Salad, Great Service Cons: Small place, so plan on waiting for a table on the weekends after 8PM more

Great owners, amazing sushi, best prices for quality of fish 7/13/2007

I love Uzu! I go there almost on a weekly basis. The owners are very nice and treat everyone very well, especially their regulars. The quality of the fish for the price cannot be found anywhere. They are also very good about allowing customers to create their own rolls. I rave about them to everyone. My sister came from Manhattan and although I told her it was amazing, didn't believe me, now she tells everyone that they have to come to Philly and eat at Uzu. Pros: Great price, friendly owners and servers more

Excellent! 7/11/2007

Sushi fan for over 20 years, had some of the best in Japan, California and NYC, most definitely the best in Philly, and now in my top 5. Pros: Sushi excellent, service, value , over all experience A+ Cons: Very small space, had to wait a while for seating, however was seated promply once a table was available. more

Best i have EVER had 7/7/2007

I eat sushi pretty much every day. I wanted to check this place out when I heard they opened, so i finally did. I can tell you now, i will be a regular. Absolutely amazing food. It's a tiny place so it's not good for a group (or more then 2), but definitely worth a visit. Pros: Fresh, friendly and affordable Cons: tiny place more

Best Sushi In Town! 7/3/2007

I have eaten at UZU a number of times. It's great for take-out or dine-in .... and I just keep coming back! The sushi is the freshest in Philly and the price can't be beat. The staff is very curteous and friendly. Overall, just an awesome place for sushi, a welcome and needed addition to Old City! more

Worst service in Philadelphia 7/2/2007

This restaurant is tiny and the service there is horrible. The sushi is really good but when it comes to service they get an F in my book. I went with 4 of my friends and we waited 2 1/2 hours just for sushi and we could not find the waitress anywhere. It also took her 45 minutes to open a 2nd bottle of wine and she commented to us saying ""You already drank one bottle. Didnt you drink enough?"" I do not think it is necessary for a waitress to comment on how many bottles of wine are drank at a dinner. Overall, the food is good but the service was horrible. I would not suggest going to this restaurant. more

great sushi at reasonable prices! 6/7/2007

I am a self confessed sushi snot, there is nothing i hate more then mediocre sushi and finding great sushi at a reasonable price is definitely a challenge. I consider UZU the best sushi in philly. The restaurant is immaculate, the food is outstanding, the service is personal and the prices are great! Their house salad is a great start to your meal, their list of 'creative rolls' is fantastic (i recommend the firecracker roll), I can't say enough about this place. I don't usually try new sushi restaurants but after reading other reviews i gave this a shot and am so glad i did. I've eaten at a lot of sushi restaurants in philly and overall UZU tops the list. Morimoto is great but i always leave with remorse (was that really worth a hundred + dollars - not to mention the drinks). At uzu we grab a bottle of wine on the way and enjoy a great lunch! Pros: Great sushi, reasonable prices, byo, more
