We love Mel!! His pricing is extremely fair and he's all about building long term relationships. We met some super shady accountants when we started our business two years ago but immediately felt comfortable with Mel. He charged us very minimally last year because our tax implications were small. This year our business is much larger but we'll definitely be back. I met with him a few weeks ago to make sure I had all my ducks in a row and he didn't even charge me for the meeting. He'd rather have us all be on the same page from the get go then get a mess come tax time. We highly recommend him. more

I had Melvin Ussing do my taxes last year because I had rather complicated financial happenings for that year. I nearly had a coronary when he showed me that I owed $14,000 in Federal taxes! Being the skeptic that I am, I took the taxes home and went over his "work" with a fine tooth comb. Come to find out, he completely neglected to fill in a portion of taxes that I had already paid. I owed the government around $3000, not $14,000 as he reported. When I went back to his office to show him the error, he let out a hearty laugh, patted me on the back (which I found to be rather deprecating) and told he he'd correct the problem. If it weren't for my own sleuthing, I would have paid 11 grand more than I really owed. I will never go back to Ussing again and I suggest anyone who does, go over their tax returns when they get them back, lest the same thing happens to them. I should have done the taxes myself--I'm sure now it would saved me a lot of money and stress! more

I have run a small non profit for the past 20 years and Mel has been my accountant for the last 13 of those years. Mel is very insightful. I don't know all of the accounting lingo and tax jargon. As problems arise, as they do in any business, I can call Mel and before I can get two or three words out of my mouth, he already knows what I'm referring to and is answering my question. About 10 years back, I started getting delinquent notices on my federal tax payments. I went to Mel about the problem. He immediately theorized that the IRS had open up a duplicate account and was applying payments to a second account (under business acronym vs. business name). He called the IRS and sure enough Mel was correct! Bottom line ... Mel always knows the answer. There isn't any of this ... "let me take a look at it and I'll get back to you" stuff. Mel figures out your problems, right then and right there, and most of the time in a matter of moments. more

Accountants in this city are a dime a dozen. Mel Ussing is different. In addition to the regular contingent of tax-time fans, Ussing is much loved by Portland's non-profit community. Ussing and his firm have set up and managed books for some of Portland most prestigious non-profits and for some of the smaller, yet very consistent and never questioned by the IRS smaller non-profits. Ussing's firm is well established and well thought of by watchdog groups. I have used him personally for a number of non-profits I have been involved with and it never ceases to amaze me that even though I run in very well known people in the community in his office his prices for services to good causes are always very responsible. I recommend Mel to every non profit I am affiliated with and I recommend him without hesitation to you. more
