my boyfriend and i fell in love at this restaurant 3/25/2008

if you're a true foody and not someone who eats at all you can eat buffets, you will appreciate this restaurant. i absolutely love this restaurant! Steak is wonderful, chicken is wonderful, but the kicker is the mahi sitting on a bed of potatos and bacon with the truffle oil. i crave it in in the middle of the day. great martinis! try the peach jalapeno martini and the ruby red martini. to die for! but you had anything until you have tried the bread pudding. i swear on everything i own with the bread pudding! i love the environment! so comfortable and classy. makes you wanna stay for hours. its very hip. i recommend it to everyone i know. ignore the reviews under mine, they dont know what they're talking about. Pros: mahi, bread pudding, martinis Cons: bruschette more

great night out on the town restaurant 10/28/2007

If you want a place to go with the gals or the boy where you can eat a good meal, and feel like you are out on the town - this is the place to go. Hip with out making us moms feel outdated I usually order my go to faves tuna tartare and hangar steak with truffle creme fraiche. The service has been spotty at times, forgetting to fill water glasses and not the quickest to get to your table but the consistent food and atmosphere more than make up for it. Plus, the cocktail list is to die for.... more

Would never eat there again! 6/29/2007

The restaurant itself and the service was good, however, the food was terrible. The servings were small, the steak was tough and of very low quality, and the fish was dry and overcooked. I will never eat at the Paragon Restaurant again! more

overrated 5/12/2007

Was very disappointing if this is rated the best in San Jose, CA we are all in trouble. I know we are all hard up for a nice place but lets review what this place doesn?t have:\r Great service. Great atmosphere, great location, food that is just to die for.\r \r I believe a great amount of effort has been in to promoting this place and if you are coming from out of town please be weary there are nicer places in San Jose without the internet HYPE. I must hand it to the who every they paid to get up in the rankings it got me to try the place but I cant say that I would return.\r \r I think the best part is when I tried to post my comments getting a 500 error. Pros: has outside Cons: you name it service food price more

Cold Food - Bad Service 4/25/2007

We started with great drinks at the bar, and quick friendly service. It went downhill when the bartender wanted to argue over closing the tab out before we were seated for dinner. We were seated, and received menus - it took 20 minutes for the waiter to come to the table. When she did, she was rushed, and acted as if were were a compication/problem. We ordered the calamari because it sounded delicous. We were getting up to leave when it arrived 25 minutes later. The ingredients had such great potential! Fennell, calamari, onions and haricot vert with a delicous spicy remoulade. The worst part - it was cold! The waiter/waitress (second person) told us that there was no heat lamp in the pick up window and nothing she could do about it.\r \r We promptly left! I think the bar has great potential, but the experience was such a non-experience I doubt I would ever return. Certainly not with a guest! Pros: Good Bar Service, good drinks Cons: Bad customer service, cold food, difficult parking more

fancier restaurant/bar place in downtown with good dishes 3/28/2007

Amazing Food and Service 1/22/2007

I will keep this short and simple. The food is outstanding and the service is great! \r It is posh enough to impress the toughest food critic and down to earth enough to take your grandmother. The PotRoast is to die for as is the Sea Bass when it is in season. I can't say enough good things about this eatery. more

Excellent Romantic atmosphere & Dining experience! 1/7/2007

My wife and I visited the Paragon Restaurant & Bar for a romantic Saturday evening and we were very pleased with our experience.\r \r We were greeted by a pleasant hostess, live band, and a welcoming stylish bar and sitting area. The bar had just the right amount of people (not overcrowded), the patrons were friendly, and we were easily able to find a place to sit and take in the atmosphere. We enjoyed some wine and the bar?s signature Pomegranate & Ginger Martini while we waited for our table. I liked that the hostess offered to take our coats and put them in the complimentary coat-check.\r \r As we were escorted to our table I noticed that the restaurant dining area was smaller than I expected and few tables were isolated for a romantic meal. Fortunately, we were seated at a quiet table for two near the window. At first there appeared to be cold air coming off the window or from an air system and we thought it was going to be a problem. However, it turned out to be fine and we enjoyed our secluded table location throughout the meal.\r \r I was concerned that the meal would turn out to be disappointing after some of the reviews that I read but I would again be pleasantly surprised. My wife had the Roasted Chicken and I had the Grilled Ribeye Steak. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and sent our compliments to the chef. In fact, we agreed that the Grilled Ribeye Steak with Horseradish Mashed Potatoes was the best either of us have ever had. We finished the meal off with the much-ballyhooed Butter Pecan Bread Pudding and were not disappointed.\r \r The service was friendly and moderately knowledgeable. We had to wait briefly for our second service of drinks but nothing so extraordinary that it would ruin our dining experience. \r \r I would highly recommend this bar and restaurant to anyone looking for a romantic evening. Since the live band added so much to the atmosphere, I would suggest going on a Friday or Saturday evening. Pros: Bar sitting area, Stylish Decor, Romantic Lighting, Live Band Cons: Small Dining Area with Limited Romantic Seating more

Nice hotel bar 11/13/2006

Nice place to grab a bite before going out! Good drinks and appetizers very reasonably priced. Nice outdoor seating with firepit and live music. Relaxing atmosphere, doesn't feel like your in a city. more

great comfort food! 9/18/2006

Quite chic without being too expensive. Decor is gorgeous! Food is creative, not cloyingly cute (Loved the Mac & Cheese) House drinks are delicious (Try the Ginger and Pomegranate Martini) We had the bread pudding for desert & will be back for another! Service was calm & efficient. Busy Bar!\r Reminds me of a hip LA style eatery. Pros: Lively, Upbeat Cons: Hard to see from the street more

Dont come if don't have to 8/26/2006

OK. so we went there for dinner on a saturday, IT's HORRIBLE. the Rib was so hard you cant even cut, the drink was so weirdly mix and cost a ton. \r The place is even worse because this one confused waitress spilt beer all over my friend pant and gave him an oozy. you call for a Hefeweizen and you get a Budweiser instead. You order one drink and you get three because they can't keep track of what they already gave you.\r Finally, there isn't any special fish, chicken or special Chocolate Decreme whatever like they put on their menu after two hours of waiting for them to serve all the guests of this one spupid wedding.\r Pros: setting was nice Cons: everything else is a joke. more

Exceeded my expectations, Paragon is a place to definitely try! 7/27/2006

I went here for a friend's birthday dinner. I was pleasantly surprised by the staff's hospitality. The environment is very chic/elegant. I had the hanger steak chef's special which I would recommend to anyone ($20). The appetizer oysters were insanely small and they did not react to the lemon ($10, a sign of freshness: the oyster will slightly cringe if it's really fresh). From my company's reaction, I would recommend the calamari, mahi mahi, ribs, and the pork loins. Get sides if you feel really hungry. The special drinks menu was weak on the alcohol side, but they do have a nice selection of vodkas to choose from. I would swing by this place again if I was planning a meal around San Jose's renovated downtown. Public parking structures are free after 6pm on 2nd and 3rd. Pros: Great food, great location and ambience. Free parking nearby! Cons: Service was slow due to the group size more

upscale relaxed 5/31/2006

Good, hearty fare. Hip lounge/bar scene. Decor is urban-sophisticated without being pretentious. Friendly, professional service. Highly recommended! more

User review by usfolks 4/12/2006

I was just at the Paragon in San francisco so i had to come check out this local! My favorite part was the atmosphere. I love the comfy chairs!!!!! We sat in the bar and had some cocktails before our reservation, we were in no rush to move. I had a pomegranite martini, it rocked! The best thing at the table was the steak, some wild mushroom gratin and asparagus, LOVED IT! My appetizer was good but I tried my friends duck confit salad and I was blown away, it's not something I would have normally gotten on my own but I'm glad he did! I'm hooked. I had no room for dessert but was told by my friends that the bread pudding was amazing! The service was great I loved the food and the atmosphere was so soothing and funky. Pleasantly surprised by everything! I will definately be back! more

I run a dining club and am always looking for great places...this was not one of them. Though the setting is very swank and sexy, there is nothing else nice I can really say. The food was bland to bad, more than half of the people didn't feel it was worth the calories to eat...and they were men! The service was spotty and the hostess wasn't the brightest bulb. We were the only people on the patio, except for some of the staff that were smoking, so the atmosphere was lacking. I wouldn't go back. Pros: swank and sexy settin, free parking Cons: food, service, price more

Average, average, average... 8/21/2005

Still in search of GREAT dining in the South Bay. This place has potential to be fantastic due to the location, ambiance, and service. But food was so AVERAGE. What a waste! more

Nice casual dining enviornment with great food. 4/16/2005

I recently took my girlfriend to the restaurant and overall we had a wonderful experience. They have a separate lounge area which makes it a nice spot for dinner or just drinks. It was Friday night and they had a live Jazz band. The wait staff was extremely attentive and we felt well taken care of. Their fried calamari appetizer was overflowing and some of the best fried calamari that I have tasted. I would not recommend the drinks from the specialty menu as they were rather weak. I had the pancetta wrapped monkfish and she had the sea bass. The food was great and neither of us had any complaints. Overall this is a very nice restaurant with a great atmosphere and great food. I highly recommend Paragon!! Pros: service, food, environment Cons: specialty drinks weak more

Great New Place to Dine! 2/4/2005

The patio looks like a great place to dine or hang out during the summer. The inside is very chic- dim lighting, trendy crowd. In the evenings, there's live jazz, which is a nice touch. Food was good- my husband and I both had seafood entrees. He had sea bass, and I had salmon. Both were very good. Be sure to order your side entrees- the vegetables that come with entrees are more of a garnish. Dessert was great- I can't remember the name of what we had, but it had apples in it with a crusted top. Service was good. When we wanted to switch tables because of a draft, unfortunately, we couldn't switch, but they did turn up the heat for us and the manager came over to check and see that we were happy. Overall, a great find! Pros: Trendy, Good food, Good service more
