Great New Orleans Style Food in LA 1/15/2010

Their oyster po'boys are the most similar to New Orleans that I've found. The owner (?) or manager is so friendly. He makes sure to introduce himself and makes sure your experience is a good one. Great service. They let you sample the main stuff if its your first time. My boyfriend and I make it a point to go almost every weekend (oysters are only served Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, FYI). Pros: OYSTER PO'BOYS!!!!! great staff! Cons: ambiance more

Don't go here! 12/12/2008

My buddy and I were going to go to Tito's Tacos (5 stars), but decided to try this place. It was overpriced. The ""jumbalaya"" was spanish rice with a small piece of sausage in it. It was not good. The salad was tiny and just shredded lettuce with some tomatoes. The corn bread was not southern style, but it was really good. Total $9.73 per person with no drink. We went back to Tito's. Pros: It was clean. Corn bread was good - could of bought a box for 80 cents from Ralphs. Cons: Not good food. Not cajun food. Nice try. Price was expensive. more

Terrible Food; Clean place But Don't Waste Your Time or Money 7/14/2008

It's never a good sign when a restaurant is empty but we wanted cajun food real bad and so we decided to try Uncle Darrows only to be very disappointed! First of all there is not much on their Menu and everything they have to offer is over priced considering the size of the servings; which are so small it's unbelievable. I wasn't too unhappy with the prices until I saw the portions. I ordered the Fish Tacos $6.99 and my friend ordered the Catfish Meal $14.95. I swear I took two bites and the Fish Tacos were gone and we left there still hungry and my friend was upset because he paid for a meal that he said tasted like dog food and not geunine Creole food at all! My kids had the Chicken Strips meal and they were complaining that they did not have enough to eat geez we ended up going to Sizzler's after all. What a joke! Pros: Parking, Clean, Plenty Of Room, Prompt Service Cons: Terrible Food, Very Small Portions of Food, Taste Well below average more

Most Original Restaurant in Venice? 7/5/2008

Great food. Great location. Great place. A perfect choice for something new and different... I recommend the ""Zeek Po' Boy"". Perfectly prepared seafood in a convenient, cajun package. Delicious. Pros: Cajun Menu, Fresh Seafood, Old-Skool Cookin' more

Best Cajun Food I've found in So Cal 5/7/2008

After a bad experince with Cajun food in Bakersfield, I figured this was going to be dodgy but I was pleasently disappointed. The food was GREAAT! I grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast & went to school in Louisiana so I know my Cajun food. I will go back there again next time I have training near LAX. :) Pros: Good food Cons: Ambience more

Hush Puppies served with a smile!! 10/29/2007

I love hush puppies and theirs were some of the best I have had in a long time. Plus, they greet all newcomers with samples of their most popular dishes to help you make your decision. Will definitely go back. Pros: Red Beans and Rice, Hush Puppies, Friendly Staff, Outdoor seating more

The worst Louisiana blue crab. Where was the shrimp in our Gumbos? We got tons of pieces of fat! 9/10/2007

I really wanted to go back to Uncle Darrow's and did when I was near the ocean with my husband. On the way we passed many great restaurants we love but I had my mind set on eating there. We ordered the Gumbo for $12.05 and the Gumbo Ya Ya for $15.35 which was a horrible mistake! We waited for 10 min. for a cracker to eat the crab and the two young employees kept making excuses that they could not locate one and that someone else was using it, there was no cracker in site. My husband went up three times to say we needed a cracker, finally we got one that was right there behind the counter. There was only one super tiny piece of shrimp in my Gumbo and my husbands more expensive Gumbo Ya Ya had NONE! I had some chicken skin in mine and some chicken fat but not any nice pieces of chicken. Our two dishes were the same except his had a few more pieces of a red sausage and some red powder sprinkled on top. The crab was really bad and the Gumbo basically consisted of slices of bratwurst, a few pieces of red sausage and rice in a gross green broth! I told the woman that there were no shrimp and the crab wasn't good, she didn't really care. She said, ""Oh yeah?"" Later, the man came by, just as we were getting up to leave and gave us a coupon if we ever decided to come back and apologized for the mishap meaning the cracker ordeal and horrible food. A coupon for 50% off an entree when you purchase an entree is no compensation to us after being disappointed about so many things. I declare this the worst food I've ever had in Marina del Rey and I like Campbell's Chunky Grilled Chicken & Sausage Gumbo canned soup better which is only $5.00 for 2. I'll stick with Killer Shrimp, and Bourbon Street Shrimp when I want to eat out. Pros: They have an A letter grade and a free parking lot. Cons: We felt sick and disappointed after eating there. more

Great friendly service - food was OK 3/28/2007

First of all let me say that the staff was SUPER NICE and let us taste test a few things before ordering - lucky for us because that saved us from ordering the bad tasting jambalya. We ended up ordering the voodoo meal and I have to say that I wasn't impressed at all. The food was just all right - I am from creole decent and like to eat food that doesn't taste like I could have made it myself. The fried fish wasn't great. The red beans and rice, greens and gumbo were all good. I am willing to give Uncle Darrows another try - I think I will try out thier breakfast or po' boys next time - I will find my fave item in no time. I also had thier peach cobbler which was great. Pros: Nice staff, gumbo and dessert Cons: fried fish or jambalaya wasn't good more

Great for Weekend Breakfast 1/17/2007

By the weekend we are basically sick and tired of being in the kitchen. Once a month we head over to Uncle Darrow's with the kids and its basically like we are right at home. Great selection and service as well as fully flavorful creole/southern inspired food. My wife loves the crab cakes and grits. I like the wings and homefries. The kids go wild with waffles and tangy chicken sausage, and we all gobble down on the cheesy eggs with onions! Beat the bland breakfast blues and head on over to Uncle Darrow's! more

Good People and Good Food 11/16/2006

I go to Uncle Darrows twice a year and I am never disappointed by either the very good people who work there or the very good food they cook. I am always surprised by the friendliness of the staff. I highly recommend giving them a try - even if you have never eaten Cajun chow. The Zeke Po'Boy is odd, but their jambalaya and gumbo are great stuff. Pros: Great Gumbo and Terrific Service Cons: it's not cheap more

Best authentic Louisiana cajun-creole home cooking you will find in LA - hands down! 10/18/2006

I was turned on to Uncle Darrows years ago when they were basically a take-out located in an old taco stand in mid-LA on Venice. A few years ago they opened a new location in the Marina area. The very first time I went to Uncle Darrows I was blown away by everything I ate, and I sampled many many items. Now years later I continue to enjoy every bite of everything I order. The gumbo is superb, the shrimp poor boy sandwich is perfect, and the catfish is to die for. The beignets are divine. The cajun suppers are the way to go. If you are a first timer, you will be offered samples of many items. The staff is helpful, friendly and aims to please. The family atmosphere extends to each and every guest they have, and their philosophy is we are all part of the human family. I cannot tell you what a wonderful experience it is to go to Uncle Darrow's time and again. If you like real Louisiana home cooking, head to Uncle Darrow's, you will not be disappointed. Pros: Real Louisiana home style cooking, friendly relaxed atmosphere. Cons: None. more

The Best Cajun in LA 2/14/2006

The food at this place ROCKS!! Looks a little like a take-out place at first (you can, but why?), but the food and the service is fantastic. Takes a little time for some stuff because they cook a lot to order, but its worth the wait. The gumbo is only on weekends (Friday-Sunday) but its all good. Po Boys to are great, as is all the rest. They give samples to help you decide, and Norwood, one of the owners, treats you like family. DON'T MISS THIS PLACE!! PS-BYOB Pros: Great Food, Friendly Service more

Not bad 12/2/2005

I haven't had ""real"" cajun food in LA, but this is just as good as all the others. Everything seems to have a slight twist to it; not in a bad way, just different. It is the absolute best service I've had at any restaurant in the city (employees are just a friendly as those in the south). Pros: Service, Good food Cons: Not "real" cajun, No crawfish more

Amazing service and even more amazing food! 11/27/2005

Interesting that the review before mine was so negative. I'm not from New Orleans but my family's from there and I used to spend every summer there growing up. Having said that, I can say that it's not exactly what one would get in New Orleans, but in a way, I prefer this. The gumbo is to die for--turkey sausage rather than pork...an improvement in my opinion. The po-boys are great and they even have beignets (though they tend to overcook them a bit). I've been going here ever since they opened a few years ago at this location and I have to say, I love it. The gumbo and crawfish etouffee are only offered Fri-Sun. The place has a very casual feel and is more of a lunch place or quick dinner place. Pros: Best service, Awesome food, Perfect Gumo Cons: Needs french fries more

IS NOT AUTHENTIC CAJUN & CREOLE FOOD 5/15/2005

I am originally from New orleans, and was craving some creole cooking. Yesterday, I decided to try Uncle Darrow's in the marina to see what all the hype was about this place. I was dining with a friend, so we ordered the voo doo supper: fried catfish, shrimp, oysters, chicken wings with a choice of side orders jumbalaya, green salad and french bread. My friend decided to try a side order of gumbo. I was very disappointed with the food. The catfish, shrimp and oysters were too salty, hard and full of cornmeal - and the chicken wasn't crispy. We finally decided to sample the file gumbo and jumbalaya... yeah right! Listen, this is not the place for authentic cajun and creole food. I will not return!!! more

A+++ Service! 4/20/2004

While I was a little concerned when I walked in (looked like a take-out joint and I was in the mood for sit-down service), my fears were quickly put to rest. This was quite possibly the best service I have received in any restaurant in LA. If it's your first time there, Uncle Darrow gives you samples of everything with an explanation of what it is. Their gumbo was excellent! The crawfish etouffe on special that night totally hit the spot! Definitely my new secret spot! Pros: Friendly service, Food, plenty of parking more

Pricey, but good 1/28/2004

Another Creole/soul restaurant that's overpriced. (It's hard to justify $12 for a catfish dinner when it's regularly found fresh at the market for less than $5.) You can eat there, but it's set us as more of a take-out-style place without a formal dining room. We may return when we want to splurge for take-out. Pros: Yummy food, Super friendly, Cooked to order Cons: Fast-food dining, Pricey more
