Editorial review from Citysearch 11/16/2012

I couple of weeks ago, two of my friends and I had a terrible experience with this restaurant. The waitress was awful. When I complained to the manager, nothing was done. In fact the service go worse. The waitress Kristen, even threw the food one the table. As we were leaving, we were charged for croutons for our salad. When we left, the waitress said, ""I got your number motherf&#kers."" WOW this made me really upset. Again, I tried to talk with the manager, but she was gone for the night. It was a Saturday night, shouldn't a manager been on? I followed up with the store on Monday and the owner refuse to talk with me. I was told there would be a meeting and I would get a call back. I never did. I called just a few minutes ago and was told she still worked there and it was a private business and that I was the one in the wrong and I acted crazy. This couldn't be further from the truth. I did get upset, and the waitress was extremely unprofessional and rude. The food was decent, but not worth the trip or money. more

Thanks for the Coffee 3/4/2010

I have to disagree with you ceka03. As a college student who tends to put off assignments and papers I find myself at Uncle Bills every few months pulling an all nighter. I get there about 2 or 3 in the morning when I cant stand my dorm anymore. Jen always seems to be the one who waits on me. I have never had a cup of coffee go empty while shes there. The food is always amazing and they don't play around with portions. I tend to try different things when I go in. I was there a few weeks ago and when I ordered the 2x2x2x2 she said ""scrambled with cheese right?"" Which was amazing because I hadn't been there since december during finals week and thats how I always order my eggs. Also based on the other guys review about witty waitresses I would have to say thats Jen because the two times I have had other servers they were rather dry and lacking in ""witt"". Pros: endless coffee, huge portions Cons: dingy interior more

Very disaapointed used to go here frequently 2/26/2010

Where do I begin!? We got seated and waited 10 min. and I have worked in food service so I know how crazy things can get. Finally I asked the bus boy who our waitress was. Our waitress came by (Jen) short blonde hair and asked if we had moved from another section (even though she saw us sit down) So after 10 min of waiting for her to take our order, finally she showed up. Took our order, our food came out fast but she preceded to throw my side of gravy and biscuits in front of me, almost spilling into my lap. We ate our meal and never once did she come back, ask how things were , no refils on drinks, NOTHING. We didn't even get our receipt until we took the small portion of the tear off tab with Jen's name up to the manager asking for our ticket to pay. The manager then proceeded to ask how our meal was. My husband wrote on the back of the stub that we were ignored and service was non-existent. The manager's excuse???? She had alot of tables. Then maybe the MANAGER should not have sat us in her section. There was no apology from the manager (no I'm sorry about that, NOTHING.) I used to be a regular with my parents when I was young every sunday after church and I told them I would NEVER be back. Needless to say I will be contacting the owner to let him know about our HORRIBLE experience. Pros: The drinks were fast Cons: Horrible waitress, even worse manager more

Character? Proportions Galore! 3/24/2008

My review is strictly for the night owls. I don't go during the day, mostly because it's mothballed with the elderly, infirm, and idiotic. Come out late at night! Try for after 10pm! Drink all the coffee you like for under 2 bucks and order a bacon burger (they are delicious) while you are at it! Not a smoker? Then you are missing out, because all of the action happens in the smoking section. The non-smokers get about three quarters of the restaurant, but it's no fun for them. The smoking section is full of hipsters, blue-collar working men, random amicable drunks, metal fans, and then people like me. We're they for the atmosphere. It's dirty, grimy, and feels like a truck stop stuck in 1971, but that's what we love about it. The wait staff is fantastically sarcastic and there are even a few who are wonderfully witty. Befriend them with dry humor and you are in like Flynn. Don't be a stranger! Goto Bill's, get a cup of joe, order some hashbrowns or eggs, and smoke a cigarette while inserting yourself into someone else's conversation. It can be a world of fun and you can make some odd friends. After hours, this is more of a social setting and place of gathering rather than a restaurant, but places like this are few and far between and we have to treasure them when we find these rare gems. Want something fancy? Goto Starbucks, yuppie. Want to take the family out for breakfast? Sure, come to Bill's, though I'd recommend leaving small children at home and staying out of the smoking section after 10pm, unless you're kids are familiar with the term 'earmuffs'. Want to play Stratego or spades? Hell, why not. Bring it. I'm game. The only downside of this is the small smoking section (unless it's Friday I think), and the other 'normal' people that insist of invading our secret lair after they've had too much to drink on the weekends. Then you get the 'pop your collar' crowd hanging around for a bit too long at their most obnoxious. Pros: Great people (smoking section/after hours) Cons: Stupid people that think it's a fancy restaurant more

Mediocre-to-poor food 8/25/2007

The thin, paper placemat sports the breakfast and dinner menu; a grimy, plastic stand touting the ?Specials.? With breakfast prices ranging from $5.25 to $11.95, the specials aren?t that great at $5.95 to $6.95, but the portions are enormous.\r Breakfast included center cut pork chops with two eggs, hash browns, gigantic buttermilk pancakes and toast. Unfortunately, it looked better than it tasted. The pork chops were reminiscent of the ?National Lampoon?s Christmas Vacation? turkey ? every drop of moisture cooked out and tough enough to patch a hole in a tire. \r And those much-revered pancakes? Thick and doughy, Uncle Bill?s buttermilk pancakes are far from light and fluffy. I can understand the appeal if one has been imbibing and needs to absorb some of those spirits, but for an actual, the-sun-is-shining breakfast they land in the stomach like a rock. The waitress proudly proclaimed that they make their own batter. Sure, but does the cook clean off the grill? Also, one had better enjoy the taste, it comes back to haunt for hours.\r On the upshot, both breakfast-time experiences (I thought the first time was an off day and decided to give them another shot) the eggs were fluffy and buttery; the hash browns cooked perfectly - crispy and golden brown on the outside, tender and hot on the inside.\r Dinner was a whole other experience. Curious, I thought I would try the meatloaf since they have it listed as ""homemade."" This slab of grayish meat with green pepper and onion chunks came slathered with catsup on the top and a brown gravy all over that tasted fresh from a can. The first bite of the meatloaf - the minute it hits your tongue it turns into a gelatinous goo; virtually no chewing required.\r Pros: They know how to do eggs & hash browns right Cons: Dungeon-like atmosphere, antacids instead of after-dinner mints more

The general attitude and service is not customer-friendly. The people, in general, act as though they are doing you a favor by FINALLY acknowledging that you're there! 4/27/2007

Over the past 12 plus years, I have attempted to give these people the benefit of the doubt (and change my feelings) by accompanying my family or visit solo, once a year, because initially, I was not impressed. Someone who has lived in St. Louis all their life had recommended UBP's for breakfast - so, my family and I made the trip. First of all, the servers acted as though they were doing us a favor by acknowledging we were there! It took quite a while before they returned with our drink order, even though it was sparcely populated! After that, it simply went downhill!!! Orders were messed up - no opologies, just an ""oh, well"" attitude. The food was OK - nothing special. We pretty much tried breakfast items to dinner items, to give us an overall experience of the menu. The prices are fair and competitive for that class of restaurant, the appearance is fine, albeit a bit depressing - in dyer need of a facelift. In the past couple of ""tries"", it seems as though it has gotten worse. So, as of last week, no more trips there for me! Honestly, St. Louis, particularly the West County area where I reside, has numerous restaurants of this venue with even fairer prices and much better food - not to mention the service and attitude of their employees. Everyone has their""deal"", but for heaven's sake, don't bring it to work!!! Maybe the ""regulars"" have a better experience because they have a rapport with the workers, which, if that's the case, I'm very happy for them. Honestly, I won't be surprised if they closed their doors for good, in the near future, because other than convenience for the apartment dwellers (on the Manchester Road area), there really isn't any other reason to frequent the place. Sorry. I'm not hard to please; I'm a nurse and I understand how difficult things can be... Maybe the South City Uncle Bill's is better...I hope so. And if that's the case, maybe Manchester should take some notes from South City! Pros: Open 24 hours Cons: Unpleasant service more

Bad customer service and food 4/6/2006

Being single and I do not cook, I eat at Uncle Bill's once or twice aday and study for college. With new cooks the food preperation and taste has declined greatly. When advising the staff at check out I was told since I conplained for 2 days that it must be me that has the problem. The evening employees do not smile or say thank you and could care less that you are a paying customer. I will start a search for a real coffie shop that wants my business. Pros: good parking, 24 hours Cons: employees are rude, Wrong food orders more

Sullen waitress strikes 10/4/2002

This is in reference to the Uncle Bill's on Kingshighway. We are frequent patrons and the cooks do a remarkable job. Most of the waitresses do well, but there is a waitress there that is so unfriendly she'll make you look around for a hidden camera. If she misses something on your order, she'll insist you never asked for it. She sometimes staffs the front register; if so, do not expect to be greeted. On the upside, it gives you something to do with the comment card while you're waiting on your food. The breakfast is well prepared and plentiful. If you get this woman, I suggest you hand your tip money to the hostess and request she give it to the cooks. Pros: good value, good food Cons: service problems, limited parking more
