Need something for the house, try Uhuru Furniture first. Occasionally, they even have great appliances. I once ordered a dryer from Sears and found a really good deal at Uhuru Furniture on a fairly new dryer. So, I cancelled the Sears order. I'm still using that dryer for 1/4 of the cost. They have a waiting list if you're looking for something particular. The people are always helpful and friendly and they let you know about what is happening with their organization, but only if you are interested. more

I enjoy shopping at Uhuru. The staff is friendly and helpful. The prices are reasonable and the proceeds go to an excellent cause. Plus there is a wide variety of unique and charming used furniture. I recommend you shop Uhuru first! more

Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles is one of a few places left where your can find outstanding well-made gently used furniture for a great price. I have purchased everything from French himoges chinz to pottery barn rugs for a song. The staff is wonderful and the cause even more wonderful. Be sure to buy a vegan blackberry pie at their annual pie drive. It will be a spiritual experience!\r With today's economy, you owe it to yourself to see what Uhuru is all about, save lots of money, and help humanity. more

Almost every time I stop by Uhuru I find something interesting to buy. Sometimes staff people are too busy to help me right away. I bought a large stuffed chair and ottoman at a great price which I enjoy every day.\r Once I bought a platform bed and I didn't check it out very carefully. It worked for about one year and then fell apart. But for the price it was still a bargain.\r I especially like the way in which knowledgeable workers in the store put their heads together and decide on prices. more

  • Uhuru Furniture is a 501c(3) project of the African People's Education & Defense Fund (APEDF) a Black community-led organization which is open to people of all nationalities to participate in. The APEDF strives to develop and institutionalize programs to defend the human and civil rights of the African community, and to address the grave disparities in education, health, healthcare, and economic development faced by the African community. APEDF funds an Uhuru (Freedom) House Community Center in West Philadelphia (52nd & Larchwood) to organize around the issues their community is confronted with. There are also Uhuru Houses in Oakland, California and St. Petersburg, Florida. Also in Florida there is a community gym with free aerobics classes, monthly wellness seminars and the Uhuru youth basketball team. We hope to one day have such programs here in Philadelphia. APEDF alslo sponsors tutoring programs, Spanish classes, and campaigns for economic development..
