Good, cheap Indian 1/29/2009

My friend recommended this place and it is a great value and great food! I love the pancake-style dish filled with potatoes, onions, etc. This was my first experience eating South Indian cuisine and it was delicious. Don't go here if you're expecting the typical Indian curry. I'd say the only downside is the ambiance...and they didn't seem to have the heater on when I was there last time (cold winter night). Also service is kind of slow, and the servers don't really come back and check on you once they've given you your food. more

we love udipi! 7/9/2008

My husband and I and all our friends love Udipi Cafe. We go for birthday dinners, lunches, whenever we can. We often save room for dessert and go to the Middle Eastern place next door for dessert and belly dancing. Pros: food, interesting south indian dishes, very good serv ice more

Be careful all Indian restaurants are rated 4 or more on 5 7/8/2008

There is no Indian restaurant that does not have a 4 / 4.5 star review. Pl be careful. We are an unethical breed of people and inflate our ratings. Least realising that all indian restaurants end up being 4.5 on 5. Pl use word of mouth and personal discretion to visit all of these restaurants. more

This restaurant has gotten great reviews but I don't know why. 8/6/2007

The service was not very good - we had to ask for ice for a warm coke. There are much better vegetarian Indian restaurants - try Woodland close to N. DeKalb Mall. I've been here twice and will never go back. Pros: Not hard to get a table Cons: Small parking lot. Bad service. Bad food. more

Excellent food , cheap prices! 7/3/2007

We headed to Udipi cafe and were not disappointed. What a wonderful lunch, we arrived a little late in the afternoon and the buffet was closed, so I ordered the dinner 'small plates' where one gets a taste of a few dishes, it was lovely, filling and light. The service isnt always very professional, but, we got what we wanted in a timely manner, and the staff were polite. The decor is a bit scruffy, but, hey! you cant have it all!!! and I prefer good food to decor any day :) Pros: Good food, low prices for a full meal Cons: not the best looking places.. more

Parking attendant left a bad taste. 3/4/2007

My friends and I were planning on going to Istanbul Cafe which is next door. I noticed UDAPI so I parked there and went in to check out the menu. It looked very good and I had also heard great things about the restaurant. I went to get my friends who had started walking towards Istanbul Cafe. The parking attendant (at least that is who I am assuming it to be) stopped me and told me that I could not park there. I told him that I was going to grab my friends so we could eat at Udapi and then I would move my car. He became stern and told me that I could not park there. So I moved my car and he told me that I could not park there either so I asked him for a better location to park. He became beligerant with me saying that I could not park at the lot. So I decided to move my car infront of Istanbul Cafe and eat there instead. The parking lot is a public parking lot and I did not see any valet signs or any reserve signs. So at the end of the day I really don't know if he was the attendant or not. But if you get past the attendant then the restaurant is probably good according to all the reviews written. Next time I am in the area I might go back if and only if the attendant is not there. So good luck. more

perhaps the worst service i've ever had 2/10/2007

a friend and i tried this restaurant last weekend and were amazed at the terrible service we received. the wait staff could not have been more apathetic, nor the buffet less appetizing. i do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. more

Just Like Mom's 3/22/2006

I felt like I was eating mom's home cooking when I ate at Udipi a few weeks ago. The sambhar was excellent, as was the coconut chutney. Dosas were large, thin and crisp. The masala inside was fantastic! The menu had a mix of traditional south indian favorites and mumbai street food (pani puri, excellent!)This was a great find since mom's home cookin' is back up north! Will definitely be back again and again. Pros: Affordable Cons: Parking more

Wonderful food! 4 Kudos! 1/17/2006

You don't have to be a cultured person to enjoy this restaurant. Everything is very light, yet filling, just the right amount of herbs and spices... I love this place. It's not fancy, but you will feel very exotic while eating here. I try to get there at least once a week! PS- It is the wait staff's custom to not disturb you during your meal. To get their attention, simply wave, and they will be right over to help you. If you ask me, that's nice for a change! Pros: Excellent Food, Quality, Prompt more

best south indian food in atlanta 1/1/2006

It is always a treat for me to go to the weekend buffet ($8.95) that always has a different assortment of dishes. The buffet alows the non-Indian familiar customer to try dishes that s/he would have never tried from the menu, much less even understood from the description. One thing I would say about the so called ""unattentive"" waitstaff is that it appears to be their custom not to disturb you during your meal. If you need something you should simply raise your hand and gesture and someone will be right over. They often will not bring you the check until you request it. Also I am not vegetarian, but I don't miss meat at all when I eat at udipi. Pros: great buffet, cheap food Cons: cramped parking more

Udipi is the bomb! 3/2/2005

My wife and I stopped at Udipi on a Tuesday afternoon, for the first time. We are both vegetarians and love Indian food. The value was great, the service was not bad and the food was delicious. That batura (the big puffy fried bread) was delicious of the baturas from different places we've tried and was great for soaking up all of that curry. Next time, I want to try their masala dosai with sooji! We look forward to going back more

My favourite 2/6/2004

As a vegetarian Londoner with an Indian fiance--both of us grad students, I am quite picky about where I go for Indian food. Udipi has been our faithful stand-by for years. Unlike many overpriced, snooty Indian places that cater their menus to the ""Western"" palate--and the inflated Atlanta yuppie budget--Udipi keeps it real with simple, no-frills Veg standards. I'm a big fan of the dosai, utthappam, malai kofta, and veg thali. The desserts are short and sweet. The dining room has character, and the servers take the ""tag-team"" approach, which keeps things moving. Go later in the evening on Fridays or Saturdays for a real, extended family-gathering feel. Pros: Unpretentious, Reliable, Reasonable cost more

Savory & Satisfying South Indian 12/2/2002

Sure, you can see clear through your napkin by the end of the meal, but that's why it tastes so good. Since this is south Indian, I would stay away from the north Indian creamier curries on the menu. We usually get the appetizer sampler, which consists of a variety of lentil cakes and fried vegetable concoctions (including a tasty samosa). The butter masala dosai is my favorite. The tangy dosai is filled with a rich, buttery mashed potato. The eggplant curry scooped up with pieces of batura is excellent. I've enjoyed the Manchurian golbi, which is a cauliflower curry with a sweet, sticky sauce. Overall, the food is heavy, but it is disguised in rich and savory flavors. Pros: casual, no wait, inexpensive Cons: so-so service, small parking lot more

janey83 11/21/2002

Flavorful and delicious, get the dosai definitely--the curry was disappointing! Get the huge puffy bread, not healthy but you don't want to come here if you're dieting. The service isn't great, but just be forthcoming, don't expect them to come to you. Pros: Inexpensive more

All that! 9/24/2002

Love this place-- spicy S. Indian veg. Everything tastes fresh, no frills, tons of food, and curried beets!!!!!! Spent time in India and this is about as close as it gets. Nothing fancy or flashy, good weekday lunch buffet w/dosa-- ain't nothing wrong with that! more

Favorite Veggie Indian 8/20/2002

Udipi is without a doubt my favorite of the many vegetarian Indian restaurants in the Decatur/ Lawrenceville Hwy area. The food is reliably delicious and an excellent value. I often take out-of-towners, who are routinely impressed with the food. Over the last two years that I have patronized Udipi, the service has also improved significantly. The restaurant is casual, clean, and often bustling. Parking can be crowded, but it's well worth it! Pros: inexpensive, delicious Cons: limited parking more

Vegetarian for Carnivores 7/21/2002

I wasn't sure what to expect seeing as I am neither an Indian food fan nor a vegetarian. The lunch buffet looked less than appetizing, so I stuck with the menu. The portions were generous but not excessive, the food was perfectly spicy-hot and quite filling. Service was less than spectacular but the food more than made up for it - never before have I had such a satisfying veggie-only meal! Pros: inexpensive, healthy Cons: locale, service more
