Good place for lunch; reasonable prces, good cajun-type food 3/12/2009

I have never eaten dinner here, only lunch. There are numerous lunch entrees I like, all of the cajun/gulf coast variety--soft shelled crab or oyster po-boys, jambalaya, fried green tomatoes, etc. Good beers on tap, featuring Abita Turbo-Dog and Abita Amber. The main dining room is NOISY due to the old-fashioned tiles on the ceiling, probably, and the fact the place is always filled to near-capacity. If you have a chance and want a quieter meal, dine in the bar area. Pros: Decent gulf coast food, inexpensive lunch menu Cons: noisy dining room (try the bar) more

Great choice for downtown restaurants 3/4/2009

This is a great place to go for slightly more than casual food. The prices can be a bit high for the food you get but most of the time it's excellent. Their fried green tomatoes are wonderful. Good wine selection, and on Tuesdays you get 1/2 off a bottle of wine. Lots of fish entrees. Great pasta. Pros: Great selection of food Cons: Sometimes overpriced, sometimes unreliable waitstaff more

Good food, great customer service 8/8/2008

We were spending a night in Hillsborough, and went in to town close to 10pm, hungry and looking for dinner. Even though it was close to closing time, the service staff were very friendly and enthusiastic, and helpful and attentive even though they had cleared up for the night and we were the last ones there. The food was good, and excellent value for money. My friend was raving about the salmon all evening. All in all a very pleasant experience. more

better than most 7/17/2007

Tupelo's serves a very small community that visits this restaurant on a daily basis. They are a very smart and informed group of diners that keep us busy every day. We serve over 150 for lunch and 100 for dinner daily with our 60 seats and I believe we have become one of the area's favorite places to dine. I am probably to a fault overly protective of my employees but when I read a review attacking one of my cooks creations, prepared for a special one evening and knowing the hard work and dedication he has put in I must defend. I am confident that if you had let someone know about it, it would have been taken care of.-Cheers to the coward-The owner of Tupelo's more

Tupelo's, not in good taste. 3/6/2007

A few associates and I had a dinner meeting at this establishment. The service was acceptable, if a little inattentive. I had heard so many great things concerning the food, and general atmosphere. I ordered a grilled chicken entree, and was more then a little dissapointed. Not to be crude but the sauce tasted, literally, like bile. I must say that what made it worse was my high expectations. I can't stress how much of a dissapointment it was. What a blemish to have on Hillsborough's historic Churton St. Pros: N/A Cons: Very bad experience more

Best Fried Green Tomatoes! 7/27/2006

It is our favorite restaurant! We love to go on Friday nights and sit outside, enjoying the downtown Hillsborough experience. more

Good food, very slow service 10/17/2005

I've been twice, including today. The food is very good (I've had the red beans and rice, fried green tomato BLT, and the blackended catfish). Service was extremely slow both times. You're supposed to get free cornbread with the meal, which never arrived even after we asked about it (one person got a salad and it would have been nice to have had something extra with the meal). We had a very long wait for refills and food. I'll go back, but only if I'm not worried about time. more

Best in Hillsborough 1/11/2003

Tupelo's has excellent food at reasonable prices. It's very good food, and cajun-inspired. However, if you're looking for authentic cajun food, this isn't your place. I highly recommend the burger, the calamari, the crawfish ravioli, and the pork chops (when they're on the menu). The specials are frequently excellent. If you find yourself in Hillsborough, eat at Tupelo's. It's the best in town. more
