Sick Fish/Bad Customer Service 10/7/2011

My husband and I purchased 4 koi fish from their makeshift pond inside the store, right before the store closed. Trying to get some help, is absolutely ridiculous and they act as if we are completely unaware of what we are purchasing and how to care for it. So we got home and one of the fish looked very ill in the bag, but we had high hopes that they would all adjust well. Two of them died within 10 hours. We went back to the store the next morning to get them replaced only to be greeted with dirty looks and rude attitudes. We were questioned by two different woman on what we did, then they tested the water (which was half their's) and during all of that, we got a major verbal lesson by both ladies individually on how to care for these fish and what we must have done that was wrong to have 2 dead fish. I was quite irritated with their judgements and was simply requesting replacements. We told them that we have frequented Tropical Haven for the past 3 years and I have been a customer since 2001. I have spent thousands of dollars in their store purchasing such items as fish, tanks, turtle tanks w/stands, snake tanks, dog food, rabbit food and other various supplies and accessories. I also told them that I was interested in purchasing $150 worth of supplies, as soon as we could figure out this fish situation. The owner came over and gave us another huge lecture on how to care for the fish. Their attitudes were still the same and they acted as if they simply did not care. After a 20 minute+ ordeal of being questioned, as if we had been arrested for a crime. . . they said they had a 7-day fish replacement, but only at half the price. So how did we want to do it. We decided to get 1 fish replaced (that was our credit amount-each fish cost $12.99). When we got home our other fish in the tank had died. Interesting enough, after they tested our water, they never said anything bad about it. They just pushed their products on us. So we have 2 koi's left and they seem very happy. Our tank is fine and we didn't need a how-to-lesson on what they thought we were doing wrong. It's too bad - that a store that has been knowledgeable in the past, has always had what I'm looking for, has good prices, but some of the tanks in the fish room are dirty and some fish and turtles appear to have not been well taken care of, fish in tanks with no price tag (which we were told they are fish sitting for some people who were moving-so those fish are off limits), along with dead fish in other tanks, their shelf products are very dusty . . . and to add to the list TERRIBLE SERVICE! Tropical Haven should appreciate every customer and act like they are happy to be in business in such a bad economy, where businesses are closing everyday. I am seriously considering shopping in Ceres. more

You won't find better! 11/22/2010

Been doing freshwater for about 10 years now and have shopped many local fish stores from Sacramento, Berkeley, Contra Costa County, and now in the Central Valley. Tropical Haven is by FAR my favorite fish and supply store to date. The owners motto, Ted, is ""the best possible quality for the lowest possible prices."" Ted answers emails, works directly with you and is the most knowlegable and polite service provider I've encountered. As for the previous comments about the help and staff.......they are busy. Be patient and let them know you are waiting. Don't just expect them to cater to you. Most of the staff there knows the business and can provide good advice. If you question it, then ask to speak to someone else. Ted is the best if he is available. As for any aquarist, I recommend doing some research and not rely soley on fish store employees. It's your job to know how to climatize and own your tank. There is a wealth of online advice out there. If you complain about Tropical Haven, to me it simply shows that you do not know what else is out there on the market. Tropical Haven cannot be beat despite the bird food spilled on the floor, or the dust. more
