The BEST Italian food on Staten Island HANDS DOWN!! 9/2/2010

I dont own the place, i dont know the owner, heck i dont even know the name of one waiter that works there but I do know good food, and this is it. I have been coming here since i was 18 years old and the first time I ate at Trattoria I said this is the best italian food on staten island and it still stands true to this very day. I have had almost everyhting on the menu including their specials. They serve the Sunday sauce in a frying pan!!! Their pizzas are delish!! Their calamari is always so fresh and fried JUST RIGHT every single time! more

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT 5/5/2010

We had our sons 1st birthday party and it was GREAT! I know what you're thinking, 1st birthday at an Italian restaurant, but Trattoria Romana was excellent. Josephine helped me plan the menu and all the details. I had about 30 people and 5 children. The food was delicious and sooooo plentiful. My guest were able to take home leftovers. The staff was so accommodating, I brought my own high chair and stroller and they were so helpful moving tables around. Even though the restaurant was open to other patrons, it was not an issue at all, for us. There was even another party in the other room, which didn't slow down service or effect the quality of food. The only issue was that there seemed to be a line to the bathroom the whole time, but as I mentioned there were 2 parties, and regular restaurant customers. I would highly recommend for any party and even for regular dinner. Prior to this party we were already frequent customers. Also want to mention that the prices are very reasonable for the quality of food. Pros: Food, wait staff, food Cons: can get crowded call ahead more

Won't go back. 2/14/2010

I've been at Trattoria Romana just once. And I'm definitely not going back. I was very excited to go cause I've been told it was one of the best Italian restaurants in Staten Island. So disappointing. The service was very good. Can't say a word about it. I ordered Fettuccine Paglia e Fieno. Way too much heavy cream and really not enough salted. I wondered if there was any salt at all. It was badly cooked like any other restaurant that don't know how to cook pasta. there was a lot of food, big quantity and little quality. My husband ordered a special of the day, Gnocchi with sausage in a red sauce. The only way it could be nice was if the sausage was grounded into the sauce. But as I feared there were whole sausage over a red sauce with no flavour. The Gnocchi were ok. Definitely not home made. The sausage wasn't fresh. That sausage was old. I highly appreciated the quality of the extravirgin olive oil on the table and the fresh pugliese bread. These were the only two ITALIAN things in the restaurant. Pros: excellent extra virgin olive oil on the table/the bread Cons: bad cooking! more

Another Favorite! 5/16/2009

Love this place. We go at least once a week! My favorite is the Cristino appetizer (mushrooms, proscuitto, mozzarella over crispy bread smothered in a butter/white wine sauce). I usually order either a filet mignon or the veal marsala. Really, everything is great here! Pros: food, service more

Can't imagine why there is a line here 3/29/2009

I have tried Trattoria 4 times. I couldn't believe that the raves were wrong. I figured it was me. Well, I am convinced that this place is terrible. A friend of mine who like just about any food, unlike myself, went with us here. She never complains about food but sent her overpriced ""special"" back as inedible.. And it was inedible. forget that the tables are on top of each other. Who would care if it was delicious? And it's not cause they're cheap. Go to Angelina's for a fabulous top notch Italian meal. Worth every penny. I will say that the pizza was delicious as an appetizer. That's it.. stay away. Pros: Pizza Cons: Everything else more

Some Good some Bad 7/18/2008

Been to Trattora many times. When the chief is there the food is very good but when non chiefs are in the kitchen run. Pros: Ihe owner Cons: His poor cook staff more

The best there is, the best there was, the best there will ever be 5/9/2008

Excellent, authentic, and friendly. I have nothing bad to say about this place. It is superb. I recommend you go and get one of the specials (they change every night) for a REAL experience. Too many people go and order fake garbage like Penne Vodka. If you go to Trattoria, be adventurous. Yes their Penne Vodka is good, but so is the supermarket imposter if you spruce it up with extra garlic and oil. C'mon people! Be Brave, do it! Pros: food, wine, price Cons: crowded more

Outrageous food 9/21/2007

My friend has been raving about this place for some time. I've been there twice and left each time feeling like a fat slob (in a good way). The food is outrageous, best chicken francese I've ever had. The fried calamari melts in your mouth, the desserts are also delicious. Not recommended for dieters! I can't stop eating everything on my plate and on the plates of my company. My only con is the service is a little shaky, it seems that after you order your first drink (in my case beer) it takes a while to get another. But I'd sacrafice that for the quality of the food. The prices are extremely fair, and the atmosphere is OK. Pros: food. Cons: service more

Won't go back! 7/11/2006

Went to dinner on a Friday night and the place was packed and hot. We were seated at a table right outside the mens room and when asked for a quieter table. . . we were told to go to the library if we wanted something quiet. All the time there were other tables available in the other room! We asked again and were finally moved to the other room where it was much quieter. I ordered pasta in a pomodoro sauce and it tasted like it came out of a can . . . took one taste and I was done. They took it off of the bill so that was a good thing. My boyfriend has been there before and has had good meals . . so we recommend that you go on an off night and don't order the red sauce! I have no desire to go back there when there are so many other great places on the island to eat! Pros: large menu with lots of choices Cons: noisy, crowded, poor service more

If Grandma Only Cooked This Well 5/10/2006

If my grandmother cooked this well, I would wouldn't have such a fear of the kitchen. But Tuesday night's cooking demonstrations is begining to change that. I shared this event with my daughter-in-law, had great fun in this friendly atmosphere and on many levels it strengthens a most important allience. Pros: food, homey more

Highly recommend food - Service not so good 3/14/2006

This would be a great take out restaurant, outstanding food - horrible service. Waiter had problems with English language and order was messed up. I'd stay away next time. Pros: Food Cons: Service, Staff more

Real Italian Food 10/27/2005

If you want REAL italian food on Staten Island, this is the place. Everything is prepared how it is supposed to be, not the usual 'fake italian' cuisine that you usually get on Staten Island. The only thing that could be inproved here are the desserts. Pros: big meals Cons: small parking area, dessert more

great place! 3/13/2005

Never had a bad meal there. One of my favorite places on the island! more

Favorite local Italian Place 7/17/2004

Whenever I am in the mood for good Italian food, I head to Trattoria for my favorite dish, veal saltimbocca a'la romana. Definitely go for some old fashioned Italian food served by SI's friendliest. Be sure to say hello to the owner who always comes around to check how everyone is doing. The food is delicious and served in good sized portions for decent money. Pros: Great food, service more

Mama Mia! 1/16/2003

Trattoria Romana is my and my boyfriend's favorite Italian restaurant on the island. Even when we eat in the city, we always seem to compare it to Trattoria, which is tops! The prices are reasonable and the food is delicious. The chef is very friendly and is always making sure that his customers are happy. The atmosphere is laid-back and the room you first walk into is cozy while the room to the left can get loud with lots of chatter. At any rate, we always find it romantic and extremely enjoyable! Pros: large menu, delicious food, cozy atmosphere Cons: can be loud, no bar area to wait more
