Check it out Dogg!!! 5/3/2008

Greatest dining experience I have ever had in Austin!! What a thrill for a downhome boy to get the best chicken fried steak and fried okra he's ever had! The service is as good as the food, especially if you have the good fortune to have Tony's beautiful daughter serve your table. I was so taken with this young lady that I tried to take her home with me but Tony stopped me at the door and made me put her down. In exchange for the return of his daughter, the Maestro agreed to autograph my copy of Texas Monthly with his glowing review in it, which is where I first discovered Tony's. This place is not to be missed for all lovers of true southern cuisine. Pros: Best Southern Food In Texas! more

Great food/Excellent caterers 4/25/2008

Although I come from a long line of wonderful cooks, Tony's is always a special treat! The food is always exceptional and the service is fast and friendly. I solicited Tony's to cater a Black History event and I was not disappointed! Despite delays on our end, I was most impressed by the professionalism displayed by Tony and his helpers. They were on time. They were professional. And the food was wonderful!!!! I would recommend Tony's for any of your catering needs. more

REAL home cooking 12/5/2006

I'm a cook and a darn good one. I labor mostly at home and love home cooking. Fancy has its place but I really respect the good down home cook. Tony is just that, a great down home cook. The corn bread is fantastic and he doesn't scrimp on the butter. You have got to try the deep fried pork chops, I never thought of deep frying breaded pork chops before and they are really great. The best part is that the food is fresh and well done. One of the other places I have been for home cooking often has a metallica taste to the sauce or other not so good problem. Forget about the home cook wanna bees, go to Tonys. You'll be back once you do. Pros: Food is really home cooking, not JUST a claim as such. more

Good food, slow service. 7/6/2006

Chicken drummetts are a great starter. Try the fried pork chops (ask for gravy) , philly sandwich, or club sandwich. Great little place but the service is slow, real slow so go when you have time. Pros: Food, charm. Cons: Slow service. more

Best Comfort Food in Town! 9/3/2005

I love comfort food and have spent a fortune at Threadgills and Hoovers. However, my money and my stomach will be found at Tony's Southern Comfort Restaurant. I suggest the Seasoned Fries for an appetizer. They are very fried (how he does this with so little oil remains a mystery to me!) in a light and flavourful batter. Served in a basket with a large serving of the most wonderful chipolte sauce. You'll find lots of home-cooked comfort foods on the menu to choose from, even chicken and waffles! There are lots of sides, incredible to-die-for cornbread and scrumptous desserts that I am sure are home made. I'll have to ask! Tony's is a downtown institution but located two blocks away from the craziness of Sixth Street club scene. Pros: Inexpensive, Roomy, Quiet more

Awesome authentic southern food 6/26/2004

I never know what to expect when entering new restaurants, but Tony's does not disappoint. The bets thing about Tony's was the food. The fried chicken was great and the special of the night, grilled pork loin, was equally as good. The staff was friendly but the service was ok. Prices were great, dinner for 2 for around $15 plus tip. I've been trying to find a good southern food restaurant in Austin and have finally found one. Tony's was great and a definite must try. Pros: great food, inexpensive more

Satisfied my Soul 11/4/2003

With my taste buds whistlin' dixie, I was in a dilemma- I craved down home cooking, yet my home ain't down with cookin' pride o' the south delicacies. Praise be to Tony's Southern Comfort for serving soul saving soul food. My spirit rejoiced upon initial sample of the hand-breaded then fried chicken breast with cream gravy. Can I get an Amen and can I get seconds on the veggies? The collard greens were scrum-diddly-umptious, yams were yam-tastic, the broc-o-lli were dyn-o-mite! All sprinkled with seasonings and laden with love, not buried in butter nor floating in fat. This and a basket of fresh rolls and cornbread made me forget names like Hoover's and Threadgill's. And that's the gospel truth. Pros: friendly, good value, fresh more
