Editorial review from Citysearch 9/22/2012

Tokyo Sushi is a great local restaurant -- a terrific place to grab a delicious sushi lunch or dinner. You will be treated well by the staff and you'll get a terrific meal of high-end quality for a reasonable price.\r \r The other review on here is about 4 years old and written by someone who entered a sushi restaurant near closing time and ordered fried food. If you want to order tempura at 11 pm -- go to NYC. Even if there were issues with the restaurant back then -- they certainly don't exist now. \r \r I have never had any quality issue with this restaurant in the 2+ years we've patronized Tokyo Sushi Cafe. Although, I have to admit, when my husband insisted we try a sushi joint in a shopping plaza I was incredibly skeptical. I was positive we wouldn't even make it to the table before we would walk out. I used to travel for work and have had sushi all over the country in some pretty upscale places -- I was not expecting anything great from Tokyo Sushi Cafe. I was WRONG.\r \r The staff is low-key and friendly, if they are not able to give a straight answer about a menu item, they check with the chef and get back to you directly -- but they are quite knowlegible. \r \r The decor is calm, soothing, and much nicer than I expected. \r \r The food is just plain, good, solid sushi. Sure, they could doll up the plates, make the presentation splashier and then charge 3 bucks more per roll -- but then we wouldn't be able to afford to eat there nearly every week.\r \r The quality of the food is really good, the presentation is down to earth but the food looks great and tastes great plus the prices are really good. Honestly -- even the super fancy restaurants I've experiened did not have higher quality than Tokyo Sushi -- they were just fancier looking -- the food wasn't any better.\r \r My husband and I have tried just about everything on the menu and have yet to come across a bad dish. My husband loves the Baby Tako appetizer and the Bubba Roll but I have a hard time saying which rolls are my favorites because I like so many different dishes. However I can say that the dishes I like best are sashimi and any roll featuring raw fish.\r \r My only suggestion for Tokyo Sushi Cafe is to refurbish the bathrooms -- they are old and dark and do not match the lovely Japanese decor of the rest of the restaurant. But hey, I don't spend much time in the bathroom so it's not that big a deal to me.\r \r . more

Oily Tempura, Poor Service, Sloppy Rolls 12/27/2008

I know my shushi and this place is bad. First of all, restaurant hours go until 11:00 on Saturdays. After going to the movies with my husband, we thought some shushi would be great so we ended up stopping here at 10:30pm. The place was completely empty except for the staff. I know my rolls, but when I asked what kind of Tempura rolls they made, the hostess/waitress said just one and it was the Seafood Tempura...as I sat waiting for my order and while she turned off the ""open"" sign and the music...I had a while to actually read the whole menu only to read int their takeout menu that they had not only more than one tempura roll, but several. Now, if I cared to go there again (which, I don't) I would have said something to the either lazy or uneducated lady about why she had told me different. I figure it was because they wanted to close and didn't want to kitchen to have to slave over a simple tempura. Sadly, the tempura ended up being quite nasty and rediculously oily. I thought I had been very polite, but apparently when they say they are open until 11pm, i guess you should know that they really means that you shouldn't actually come in after 10:30pm because they want to start closing the place up as you are sitting in there waiting. To continue, maybe it is bebause I am from New York and we have stricter laws on restaurants handling food, but I find it disgusting to watch someone making my food with no gloves, eating with the same hands. \r Moving on...the remaing 6 rolls I ordered were not put together with a care in the world and were quite sloppy. The pieces fell apart even before I picked them up. This place is out of their mind charging what they do for the jokes they end up serving you. The fish was pretty warm and tasteless. Shame on me for trying to get some good sushi on the fly. I have, however, been to a couple amazing places I would recommend in a heartbeat...California Rollin (Rochester, NY) and Shushihanna (Towson, MD). Pros: Oily Tempura, poorly made rolls, poor service more
