Thea Mediterranean

In the past, this restaurant has had a good reputation for delicious food, good service and a great atmosphere. I've not been to Thea in a couple of years until last week. On my recent visit, I was surprized by how run down the place had gotten. Of particular note is the fact that every table in the place was dirty, with food smudges and grease spots. On marble tops, this looks particularly unappetizing. I then looked around and noticed fixtures where very dusty and furniture was not well maintained. The menus themselves seemed to have a slightly grease coating. This used to be a classy place. No longer. \r \r Service was average; no complaints, no praises. Although the food was good, it seemed overpriced. The quality and quantity of meat in the Chicken Souvlaki just doesn't justify the price of $19, especially given the dingy environment.\r \r It doesn?t seem to me that it would take a whole lot to get this restaurant back on track. Overall, this place as a lot of potential to recover its formal status, but isn't up to par right now. Well, I'm changing my review from 'average' to 'below average. The food is really good and we've dined here at least a dozen times. But the service is going down hill (maybe since Debbie? the manager left). We took some people we wanted to impress and this was a mistake. The waiter was a young guy dressed in jeans and a casual untucked shirt. He looked like he just walked in off the street and acted as though he'd rather be anywhere else. He embarrassed us in front of our guests because we had brought a special bottle of wine ('00 Silver Oak cab) which the waiter said they couldn't cork because they had it ('02) on their wine list, but he'd ""do us a favor this one time"". Two orders of flaming cheese were lit by our table without the loud ""Opa!"" that we've always had before. Everyone working there that night was slow and miserable. We arrived at Thea on 11/4/06 without a reservation. The only immediate seating was at the bar or lounge area. We decided that the lounge was OK. Instead of being led to our seats, the hostess handed us plates and menus and were told to find a seat. What kind of service is this? Very unprofessional! We sat in the lounge and waited and waited. No service. The acting floor manager noticed that we were not being waited upon, so she took our order. We ordered two appetizers, spanikopita and the Greek dip plate. The spanikopita was average at best but the real issue was with the dip plate. For $14 we received four golf ball sized portions and four small pitas. Don't waste your time or money on this appetizer because you will be disappointed. When our bill came, I mentioned to the floor manager about the poor service and she agreed with us and removed my beer from the bill. We filled out a ""How are we doing"" card and the manager was interested in what we had to write down and that she would forward this information to the general manager.
