A Blast From The Past 8/11/2011

I have been going to The Van's for the past 20 years. For a great lunch I usually get a burger and beer with the works, melted cheese and crispy bacon. For dinner, I sit down for a nice steak, done on the mesquite broiler or prime rib Yum!! Holidays are also a special time to go to the Van's including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even Easter. I highly recommend this restaurant to everybody for a delicious sit down meal. more

RUDE WAITER AND VERY BAD SERVICE! 6/13/2011

Went for my 75th birthday dinner with 6 people. Upon making the reservations the receptionist said we will make it nice. The food was just so so. The service was very slow but more importantly the waiter was extremely rude and looked like a hippie with long gray hair! Upon getting the bill they charged $10.00 for a little scoop of ice cream that was supposed to be my birthday ""free"" desert. When asked the waiter he said ""Oh well""! We Will NEVER go back!! more

Great food, friendly atmosphere 9/18/2010

This restaurant is great! Fun, friendly atmosphere, great views, nice bar area and free, delicious apps when you come for happy hour. I had the prime rib special and my wife had the lobster. Both were terrific. Nice people, great service. Will definitely come here again! more

Delicious Dinner! 12/2/2009

Van's has delicious prime rib! When I walked in I thought it was a bit kitchy but I see, that's it's charm. My family, there were 10 of us, all had really great entrees. I had the prime rib which I ordered medium rare and it came out perfectly. We had the grilled artichoke, garlic shrimp, crab cakes and the wedge, as apps and all were good. Crab cakes could have been juicier and I like bacon with my wedge but other than that everything else was perfect. The Spicy Seafood pasta is delish! If you like vodka, order the VollyeBall! You'll see what I mean after you drink it! The people were very nice and the service, all around, was excellent. During the day, the view is great. At night, it's nice and right now it's decorated so festively. I highly recommend Van's for group dining. Thanks Van's for a great evening! Pros: Great Meal and Killer Drinks! Cons: A bit outdated atmosphere but it works! more

Nice and cozy setting with great food! 12/1/2009

Great place to hang out and have a drink. Better place to eat, the food is very good. Stuffed Mushrooms, giant prawns, etc mmmmm... The views from the dining room is also nice cause the restaurant is located on top of a hill... You can easily pass the place up off of el camino, but you have to go and try at least once. Enjoy! Pros: good food. Cons: small dining areas. more

just rang there to make reservation for large party on sunday the lady or so called lady was very very rude did not want to know thats ok i will make reservations in another restaurant this place sounds terrible anyway and probably would not be to handle a big cound more

The food was pretty good...steaks are a good size..tasted great...GET YOUR FOOD TO GO! Pros: Pretty tasty steaks! Cons: Everything else! more

OVERPRICED & TERRIBLE 1/1/2008

Want to be ripped off? Want food that all tastes like it was cooked on the same grill? Want a salad that has brown lettuce and sour dressing? Want to pay 25 bucks for linguini jambalaya with overcooked linguini and jambalaya that tastes like they scooped it out of a dumpster? Want service from a college kid that is watching the clock and forgets everything you told her? Want the most overrated 4.5 star place on city search (at the time I read these reviews) south of San Francisco? Pros: Has View Cons: Everything Else more

Best place to eat 6/3/2007

I love this restaurant, I have been there twice since I found it first on 24hrlocator. Everyone is so nice and friendly there, great music on the weekends. I love the picture of Bobb McKittrick that they have posted on 24hrlocator dot com. Great job guys, keep up the good work more

Lousy food 9/23/2006

We tried appitizers, salad, entree, etc. All was terrible. I had the blackened Catfish and all I could taste was char. No flavor!!! The stuffed mushrooms were mediocre at best. To finish off the night, we had the coffee. Folgers instant would have been better. I would rather have had 7-11 coffee, at least it would have tasted better. Pros: atmosphere Cons: food!! more

The Vans is a great local place to enjoy wonderful views, a slice of history and enjoyable atmosphere. What I did not find at the Vans was great food... or service for that matter. The menue is on the "safe" side. Meaning, you won't find anything to tell your friends about... more like the good 'ole faithfuls... steak, basic fish dishes, etc. The service is somewhat absent minded (i've been here 3 times, so it's not a fluke). While the servers tend to be friendly... they seem inexperienced for the level of cost associated with eating at the Vans. PROS: views, local CONS: food, service more

I went to the Vans last summer and the food was okay, but I wouldn't go back just because of the food. The reason to go to The Vans is because of it's historic location. The building is one of the few remaining buildings from the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1909 (the same origin of the Palace of Fine Arts), which was shipped down the Bay and set up in Belmont as a restaurant. It has a great view and is an interesting place for San Francisco history. more

Not Impressed 1/9/2006

First of all, the directions given by the website were wrong and we had to find the place by default. We were seated promptly, and the service was great as was the view. Although the portions were more than ample, we all felt that our three pasta dishes lacked flavor. We also had to wait 20 minutes to receive our meals even though the restaurant didn't seem busy. Overall, we were not too impressed with the meals and probably will not return. Pros: view, service Cons: food more

Quality food, reasonable prices 11/2/2005

Everytime I visit this restaurant I leave satisfied along with my doggie bag to take home. This is a great place to get some quality, high class food for reasonable prices since their portions tend to be more than most people can finish. I highly recommend this place and if you get a window seat the view is awesome. They have a wide range of entrees to choose from, steak, seafood, chicken, etc... more

Great Classic Recipes 9/6/2005

After reading some reviews on this site we decided to give it a try. The only complaint I had was on the service. Our waitress wouldn't crack a smile for a million bucks! She was just lacking in any sort of friendly personality. So in a way, it killed the ambience of the place and our mood...just a little. But the food was great. Definitely be sure to listen to the waitress when she says the specials! And go early for a great seat by the windows. Pros: Reliable Menu, Downhome cooking more

This restaurant is outstanding. The food is very tasteful, but a little pricy. This is a special occassion restaurant, and the one you take there will be very thankful. The views of the bay and lower peninsula are great. The servers are always on top of getting you what you need to be able to enjoy your dinner at the Van's. more
