Best

A destination worth seeking out. Don't make solid plans for after because there's usually a wait. Prices keep going up but I'm still paying. Totally unique sauce and sides (try th...

The meat itself is fine, even if the ribs are undercooked. The sauce is Hawaiian, for heaven's sake. And it's sweet. And there's room for hundreds of people. This is not a bar...

Oh My God good 8/14/2002

If you've never been, you are missing a Austin tradition. This is the best BBQ I have ever had!! more

best bar-ba-q on the planet!!! 8/11/2002

If you want good bar-ba-q than load up the car and go to Salt-Lick. There is no comparison. This is without contest the best food i have ever eaten. The prices are reasonable, it is a family setting and there is space for large partys. Over all with good food, great prices, family setting, and enought room for everyone Salt-Lick adds up to a perfect 10! Pros: inexpensive, good quality, good parking Cons: far from houston more

Country's Best 'Cue 8/8/2002

I still say that as a region, Memphis barbecue beats Texas any day...but the Salt Lick. Well, it could be the best barbecue in the country (the Rendezvous still has the best sauce, of course.) Atmosphere plays a part. What's not to love about a place that encourages you to bring a full cooler of beer to dinner. Waiting for a table isn't so bad when you've got live music and cold beer to keep you busy. And then there's the barbecue. Go family style. You may bust a gut, but trust me, it's worth it. Grab some sauce on your way out. You'll crave it, I promise. Pros: bbq, atmosphere, byob Cons: long drive more

bbq..good, service...BAD 8/4/2002

I heard that this is one of the best bbq in town; Ill gives props to that. I do, however, disagree on the service. Young FULL OF ATTITUDE hostesses were not what I was in the mood for. Maybe its b/c we came 30 min before closing that meant that they had to stay longer after closing. The point is, we demand the same service as every other patron that walks in. I might add, we weren't the last group to walk in that late either, and it was a bit perplexing that they were able to get their dessert 10 minutes AFTER our waiter announced to our group that they had closed the dessert. Conclusion, the whole bbq experience was good but if you expect service & youre not from this part of the woods then I suggest you put on a thick skin & ignore the staring eyes. Pros: bbq Cons: service more

oh my god 8/3/2002

There are no words...simply amazing BBQ and fixins. This is a must for tourists and locals alike...big parties are welcomed...and the BYOB policy may seem dauting, but I think it adds to the flavor of the salt lick. more

Finga likin' 8/1/2002

They use a great smoking system. However, it's too far to drive just for the food. There is delicious BBQ in town. Pros: Remote date more

salt lick's worth a lick 8/1/2002

Salt lick has usually had the best barbecue. The sides aren't always the greatest though. The blackberry cobbler is awesome. I like the rural ambience too. Seems fitting for barbecue. Pros: plenty parking, moderate price, meat and cobblers Cons: beans need work more

BBQ licken good 7/31/2002

I was only able to visit the airport restaurant but I had one of the best BBQ turkey sandwiches ever there. Pros: inexpensive, sandwiches, sauce Cons: airport setting more

The best in the U.S.! 7/26/2002

I have travel all 50 states and BBQ is my favorite food. Hands down Salt Lick is THE BEST quality food with the best flavor in the U.S. if not in the world! If they would only build one in Austin so we don't have to drive - I would eat there once a week! Pros: Flavor, Price, Very Texas! Cons: Travel Time, Too busy on weekends., Dirt Parking Lot more

Worth the trip 7/26/2002

My husband and I went to Austin a couple of months ago and we're told to check out this out of the way BBQ rest. It was 30 minutes from our hotel but so worth the trip. Great outdoor seating for people waiting for a table and you can't beat bringing your own beer. It did take over an hour to be seated but that didn't bother us at all more

Outstanding 7/25/2002

Hands down the best BBQ anywhere. Not even close. Rudy's is in a distant second. more

MEAT 7/25/2002

Goto SaltLick to enjoy a great variety of meats, BBQ sauce, and fresh breads. Mm-mmm sounds mouth watering. Pros: good meat, good service, good bisquits Cons: uncomfortable seating, grimy tables, slobish eating more

vegetarian recommendation 7/24/2002

Thinking about the Salt Lick's barbecue almost makes me wish I wasn't vegetarian now! more

Why is there even a contest? 7/24/2002

Without a doubt, the Salt Lick is by far the best barbeque there is (not just the best in town). And you can take that from someone who overall, is not a big fan of BBQ! The sauce is light & flavorful, not like a thick ketchup consistency... The meat is first rate, the sides are consistently good, and the ambience is down-home, Texas. Think of it this way, if a restaraunt is filled to the gills every weekend, and they ONLY take cash, you KNOW it's got to be good! Pros: Good Food, Great for guests, Ample portions Cons: Cash Only more

Keep it simple! 7/24/2002

Great staff, great food, great service. Best coleslaw and potatoe salad I've ever eaten. All these basics combined with a real Hill Country atmosphere provide customers with an unmatched dining experience. Pros: cole slaw, potatoe salad Cons: eating to much more
