Best

A destination worth seeking out. Don't make solid plans for after because there's usually a wait. Prices keep going up but I'm still paying. Totally unique sauce and sides (try th...

The meat itself is fine, even if the ribs are undercooked. The sauce is Hawaiian, for heaven's sake. And it's sweet. And there's room for hundreds of people. This is not a bar...

What the big deal? 8/10/2003

Good bbq...although not up to all the hype. Mustard based sauce is unique. Sausages are great. Chicken (on Sundays) is good. Pork ribs are ok. Beef is average. Ambiance is outstanding. Great place to bring out of towners, but for locals...try it. I'll keep looking for better bbq. Pros: ambiance Cons: crowded, servers act bored more

A Texas Classic 6/5/2003

We have all our family get-togethers here and it is DEFINITELY with the drive and the usually long wait. Bring beer! And you must get the blackberry cobbler for dessert.. it is to die for. Pros: lots of parking, great environment, yummy food Cons: long wait time more

Salt Lick??? No Way!!!!! 5/22/2003

The Salt Lick is highly over rated for a Texas Bar-B-Q joint. The really good places are in Schulenberg, Flatonia, Elgin and especially Lockhart. Lockhart has four places better than the Salt Lick!!! Joel's in Flatonia is far better and Myers in Elgin has the best beef sausage on the planet. I am a traveling salesman and I know where good food is in Central Texas!!!! Cons: snotty waitress, average beef, average sausage more

the best cow & pig ever 5/22/2003

I love Salt Lick! I would honestly move back to Austin (from NYC) for IT! MMMMMM, my mouth waters at the thought of the all you can eat brisket n tater salad (which is a cross between regular tater salad and mashed taters so you're getting the best of both worlds - trust). It's a drive, but this bbq is the real thing...please do not waste your time anywhere else...invest in a 30-mile drive through the hill country...and don't forget to fill up the cooler with some icy cold Tecates (arriba el norte!) Pros: talk about eating OUT, go when you're hungry, best TX atmosphere Cons: none, what, so ever more

AMAZING!!!! 3/12/2003

I love good barbeque and this place tops my list. Best Barbeque I've ever had. The ""All you can eat platter"" was the best value I have EVER seen. The bring your own boos policy works great for a casual place like this. Pros: AWESOME food, Great value more

long drive.. but good bbq 2/21/2003

If you're into some great all u can eat bbq action.. this is the place to go.. its about a 30-45 min drive from austin. I used to be able to eat a whole lot of bbq back in college.. but now I can't eat as much so its not worth it to me to drive down there when I can just drive to Rudy's! more

Salt Lick 2/21/2003

Probably the best BBQ pit that I have been to in the south . Who can beat bring your own beer and all you can eat? Although hard to find, a must visit when in Texas. more

Awsome 2/7/2003

Great texas bbq and lively happy atmosphere. I enjoy the ribs and bbq sauce the best more

sweet sauce 1/29/2003

The meat itself is fine, even if the ribs are undercooked. The sauce is Hawaiian, for heaven's sake. And it's sweet. And there's room for hundreds of people. This is not a barbecue stand; it's a factory. Having said that, if you're a true aficionado, you should try it. Be careful if you're making a left turn. Pros: good parking, roomy, good service Cons: Hawaiian style sauce!, undercooked ribs, bland beans more

love bbq 1/9/2003

Great food , nice place, nice people, dood service and a fun place to go more

Fantastic 1/9/2003

This is the best barbeque, bar none. The smell hits you as you drive around the bend. The atmosphere is great and very casual as any b-b-que joint should be. Try it, you won't regret it. Pros: Great take-out value, Perfect kids place more

Yankee loves Salt Lick 1/9/2003

The food is great and the atmosphere is incredibly relaxing. It is the best brisket inside or outside of Texas. Pros: great parking, relaxed atmosphere Cons: crowded more

An experience for a Midwesterner 1/9/2003

I visited this BBQ pit over 10 years ago and still can remember the taste of the sauce!! I would give anything to go back. For a midwesterner, what a cool restaurant b/c it's a huge screened in BBQ pit. Seating circles the pit. Wow, that restaurant is so cool. Out-of-staters really should check it out. I recommend grabbing a bottle of sauce to take home b/c you will ""crave it fortnightly!"" Pros: outdoor feeling Cons: no air conditioning more

Best BBQ Around 1/8/2003

Salt Lick is bar none the best bbq around and the atmosphere makes the meal complete. It's worth the short drive from Austin or Wimberley. Pros: Lots of Paring, Beautiful Scenery, Fab Food more

yeeeccccchhhhh 1/8/2003

This place is for the less genteel crowd. If you like your barbeque dry as burnt toast, sausage shriveled from overcooking, sauce too spicy to use to wet it a little then this is your place. The only good point was the beer was cold. Cons: barbeque was dry, beans were too spicy, sauce was too spicy more

Not Bad BBQ 1/8/2003

Salt Lick BBQ was much better in the 70's than today. It used to be about BBQ, but now it caters to the yuppies and the grease is gone! Pros: Nice atmosphere, decent food Cons: expensive for BBQ, Too trendy, crowded more

Best of the Best 1/7/2003

The Salt Lick's BBQ is definately the best I've tasted, and that is saying a whole lot, considering there are so many places in the metroplex. The ribs are the ultimate especially topped with the special sause that is on every table. Pros: Taste, BYOB, Parking Cons: Expensive, Distance more

fantastic 12/27/2002

Great food, inexpensive, well worth the drive, go there every chance. more

this is the place 12/19/2002

Nothing fancy here. Just good old Texas BBQ. Nice drive out to it andonce you enter the gate, you know you have found BBQ Heaven. If you go, you will not be disappointed. Only down side, is it is cash only out there. No cards more

Home cookin' Texas style 12/3/2002

Rustic with lots of atmosphere and some of the best bbq I've ever had in good ole Texas, never again will I appreciate California grilling as much! The service is friendly and good, the portions are generous, and you just never know who you will run into! Put on those cowboy boots, wear something old in case you spill, and get ready for some good eats at the Saltlick. Pros: Great meat, Great sauce, Big portions Cons: A little expensive, Out of the way, Noisy! more
