Mixed feelings... 2/24/2011

We weren't sure what to do around Valentine's weekend, so on ""Date Night"" we stopped in at the Port Room at the St. James Hotel. The bartender was wonderful (Lori?), she educated us on a few things & whipped up an awesome martini for me. We were there very early so not too many people were there yet, however by the time we left they were arriving. The Port is a comfortable old place, we'll come back here soon. (Maybe get a room too) We also stopped on the 5th floor, to Jimmy's Pub. We loved the atmosphere & furnishing, nice fireplace, couches, wood paneling & views. We weren't so happy with the food... it's like a burger & beer place! My fish was dry & hard, and our service there was good at first, but then our server forgot about us for a really long time. (I don't like having to ASK for a bill) If we come back to Jimmy's it will be just for burgers & beer. more

Disgusting 6/26/2010

My wife and I were looking for a change of pace from the cities, so we looked online and fell in love with the classic charm of this hotel, about the bars, restaurants, pillow top beds. Well when we walked into our room that was 184 a night the bed was a full size and it was not a pillow top, we have a pillow top at home, i took a picture of it to prove it was not a pillowtop, there was no one of a kind quilt on the bed there was no quilt on the bed. The mattress was dated and was 11 years old, I have to go to the chiropractor now to get adjusted. The room was very small reminded me of hotel rooms in Europe. Our lamps had chunks missing out of the lampshades, one lampshade looked like someone cut it with a knife. Our bathroom, was dirty, the floors and things were clean all the wood work was dirty and dusty, the room itself had wallpaper that was tearing off the walls. You have got to be kidding me I would have rather stayed at the super 8, i have never been so sore waking up in the morning from a hotel room. At 184 a night could have gotten us a room at a 5 star downtown and have change in our pockets. The only thing I liked about this place Jimmys had excellent wings, and the towels were nice and oversized and very soft. Pros: Good Chicken Wings, and nice big fluffy towels Cons: Website lies, we had no pillow top, dirty bathrooms, more

Rooms OK, Dinner SUPERB!! 3/18/2007

My Fiance and I thought we would get out of the cities for a change of pace. Neither of us has ever stayed at the St James before so we thought we'd give it a try. We booked their ""Victorian"" package which included a $10 coupon for ""Jimmy's"" bar, three course dinner (our choice) from the regular menu in the ""Port"" restaurant, and full breakfast in the ""Veranda"". The rooms were adequate although we half expected a King rather than a Queen bed. Don't worry about the view, the windows are too small to really get much chance for a good view anyway. The best part of the entire experiance was the dinner. Executive Chef Julian Grainger, formerly of Hilton's ""Carvers"" has been given somewhat of a free range of the kitchen to prepare what he wishes. Many of the items on the menu are recognizable from ""Carvers"" and were wonderfully prepared. Our appetizer, one of the specials for that night, was Twice Baked Lobster Tail and was superb. Both the listed Wild Mushroom Soup and the special Asparagus Soup were excellent as were the Breast of Duck and the New York Steak. So were the Mandarin Chocolate ""crunch"" Creme Brulee and the Peach Melba Cheesecake Sundae. In short, GO FOR THE FOOD!! A short drive, even from Eden Prairie!! Pros: Port restaurant was superb. Good parking, comfortable bed Cons: Sparse furnishings, closet in bathroom, bathroom nearly as big as bedroom, no counter space in bathroom for toiletries, etc.. more

Nightmare Wedding Night 6/8/2006

When my new husband and I arrived at the St. James on our wedding night we were told that all of the rooms were taken. They had given our room to another bride and groom 20 mins before we arrived. I stood in my dress in the lobby for 45 mins while they tried to figure out what to do, only to send us home. My husband had confirmed our room the day before and had a confirmation number. On one of the most important nights of our lives we were sent home because they couldn't figure out what happend. I will never go back and I wouldn't trust them with anything. more
