Oldest Seafood Place in Washington 8/21/2005

And in my opinion, the best as well. The Oyster House is an interesting mix of old and new, having a rich history and fabulous food, but it doesn't take itself that seriously. For the best, really- their mascot is a family of cartoon oysters that are featured on all their printed material. So for being such a nice place, the atmosphere is very relaxed- you don't have to wear a suit and tie, though you might end up paying $30 for your meal. There's usually a game on in the background, and the bar is located in the middle of the restaurant. Still, it's not a bad place to bring the kids- the junior meals are very reasonably priced, with all the usual fare like chicken strips and spaghetti. The regular menu is more varied, running between crab and gorgonzola tortellini to bacon wrapped fillet mignon, to their house speciality, pan fried Olympia oysters. Located at the waterfront of Downtown Olympia, The Oyster House has its busiest season in summer, or whenever the weather is nice. It's not a bad idea at these times to park a little distance from the restaurant to enjoy the stroll on the boardwalk to and from. For those who use truly alternative methods of travel, the restaurant actually has docking available for boats. When the weather is bad, they're less busy, but of course seating is halved as the spacious patio will be closed. more
