The only reason to go to the Getty is for the architecture and the gardens. The permanent collection is horrible. 99% of the artwork there is un-influential and boring. Getty w...

Relax in the Gardens 5/20/2002

Go for the view and the gardens. The art collection is patchy, with some obvious crowd-pleasers including Van Gough's Irises and some well-known Monets. Go on nice day, take your shoes off and enjoy a picnic in the velvety grass. For 5 bucks, this practically-free day in L.A. can't be beat. Pros: view, gardens Cons: patchy collection more

I don't think you can get a better view of Los Angeles than at the Getty Center...the view alone is worth going more

Nice Culture Fix 5/15/2002

The architecure alone makes it worth going. The permanent collection isn't great. (Altho ... I was particularly impressed with the 12 x 12 ft. beds in the decrative furniture building.) The impressionist area is a favorite--go there first or suffer the crowds. Also, make sure you leave enough time to go outside--the gardens are amazing year round. more

Relax by the gardens 5/15/2002

Loved the monorail ride from the parking lot, the view of the hills and the scent of the trees. Liked the gift shop, and thought the architecture was gorgeous. But the collections themselves -- a little too ornate for me, too much ""drawing rooms of the rich and famous and tacky"" action. I much prefered sitting on a bench overlooking the beautiful cactus garden, watching people go by and enjoyed the day. more

Great for Guests 5/13/2002

The Getty Center is a surefire excursion if your entertaining guests. Even if your visitors aren't into art (the permanent collection isn't exceptional anyway), the architecture and views of the L.A. basin and coastline are impressive. Plan to have lunch at the restaurant for an all-out experience, though riding the tram up, strolling through the garden and grabbing a snack is usually enough to impress most folks. There are often some interesting visiting exhibits, and I've actually enjoyed myself each time I've been as well. However, don't bother with the docent-led architecture tour. It's dry and not particularly informative; you'll be better entertained by exploring on your own. Pros: Incredible views, Beautiful garden Cons: So-so collection more
