I know this place is a total fixture and has been here forever and ever. I guess it's sort of like Vinny Testa's (now Vinny T's), where people are impressed by moderate prices an...

why is this place so popular? 4/1/2012

no the food is not gross, but i has a special dinner sampler that had chicken parm( deep fried? that's just nasty) that was no better than a sub shops frozen cutlet that gets tossed in the deep fryer, a rubber meat ball that was worse than most sub shops bogus meatballs they use in a meatball sub, and a small chunk of lasagna that was just OK, and the famous toasted ravioli? really? a gummy pre cooked (it came out about 30 seconds after we ordered it) tasteless dry gluey disaster. the drinks were large and strong i give them that, but that's no reason to a restaurant, that place was jam packed , and people were waiting for a long time to be seated , i just don't get it, and for the quality and size of the portions it is no bargain. i guess people are just really dumb, a much much better family style Italian restaurant could not make it in the same general area, and that place was 100000000000% better fresh food, high quality food, huge portion, huge value, nah lets go to the place that give you sub shop quality food at 3x the price of a sub shop. it is a mystery to me. never again more

Favorite Restaurant since I was a kid. . . and still is! 12/12/2008

I love italian food, and I realize this is not a north end (high end) restaurant, but the Chateau in Waltham still ranks as one of my all time favorite places to eat in the Boston area. I was surprised to read other review saying it is ""cafeteria food."" Thats just ridiculous. It is simple, good, homemade style italian food. The place is not fancy, but the kitschy decor and funny waitresses are part of its charm. I personally love the gold room with its paint on velvet portraits of 1970's stars. Its fun! People need to get over themselves and see it for what it is: A place with better then average italian food, great marinara sauce, fantastic fried seafood, a huge varied menu, dated but charming decor, and absolutely reasonable prices! I highly recommend it and I go every single time I come back to the Boston area. Pros: Great food, great prices, fun kitschy family environment! Cons: You will not like it if you usually only dine at $35 a plate north end eateries. . .its working class italian food!!! more

whoever rates it good needs a remedial food lesson 7/30/2008

A prior reviewer said: How anyone could say it is ""slightly above cafeteria food"" is beyond me, I LOVE the Chateau, we live on the Cape and anytime we are going by or anywhere near Waltham we simply MUST stop in for their delicious veal parm and toasted raviolis. Not to mention the breat is fabolous! Try it for yourself and you too will be completely hooked. There is a reason it is always packed!\r ------------------------\r Well, I agree that the place is maybe 1-2 steps above cafeteria food. I say that as a full blooded Italian that KNOWS good Italian food and not a ""don't know how to cook"" person who thinks anything from anywhere that she can't cook is great. The bread is NOT great! It is lousy and not ""Italian bread"". Reason always packed is simple: THE PRICES and the fact that the area has so many seniors and people that don't know how to cook well. That reviewer that loved it obviously has NO IDEA of what ""good"" Italian food is. If you enjoy and know good Italian food - this place is NOT for you as it is NOT for us! Pros: people that don't know any better like it Cons: food is bland, below average, not truly ""Italian"", americanized versions and bad at that more

Editorial review from GrubHub 7/29/2008

While the service with Grubhub was great, the food quality from Chateau was terrible. It was cold, badly packaged, and didn't taste very good. We will not go in person to the restaurant or order from them again. more

average food 10/19/2006

Average food, overcooked pasta. Nice service, somewhat fun for families. Lots of retirees getting the early bird specials!!! Pros: good parking Cons: average food more

affordable bland americanized 8/6/2002

Unless you are tretired and on a limited budget - forget this place. Food is a step above cafeteria style - bland-americanized - almost like reheated frozen food from Shaws. Good value in terms of amount - but if you really like ITALIAN food -- don't look twice here. Pros: value, affordability Cons: food quality, taste more
