Being a music buff (scenester?) I spent a full week in mid-October ""sick from work,"" trolling the LES, E Vill and WBurg for new bands during CMJ. When Sunday came I was burnt ou...

Friendly Staff & Management 2/10/2010

I live around the corner from The Bowery Electric, I usually come in after work on weekdays for a drink. The bartenders are always funny, upbeat and a pleasure to chat with. I have met Diane (the manager) on several occasions and she has always been friendly and professional. So after seeing some negative reviews I wanted to post my own. From the door people to bar staff and management, I know most of these guys have been in New York for a long time, and know how to run a great bar/venue. I think if anyone had a bad experience here I have to conclude it's because they're new to the city, don't understand how to treat door staff (they are the ones letting you in!) and generally just amateurs to NYC night-life. It's sad when people come here and bad mouth staffers doing a good job just because they were to drunk, rude or both to have a good time. Pros: Professional Barstaff & Management Cons: Crowded (But Fun!) On Weekends more

Crowd doesn't fit the neighborhood 2/9/2010

I live in this hood and the crowd here has become increasingly preppy and obnoxious. The East Village rock club vibe is gone. Now it’s a bunch of 19 year olds in popped collars & tube dresses. I came Saturday for a bday and was treated poorly at the door. I asked if the party was downstairs, she glared at me and said yeah, how many are you? Two. She said, when your whole party is here, you can go. My friend was next to me. She rolled her eyes and moved the rope. If you insist on lists and rules, don’t give people a hard time if they follow them. Bottom line: the space is really cool but there are better places for $8 drinks & loud music. Pros: Cool Space Cons: Rude staff, bad crowd more

GREAT PLACE FOR A PARTY! 2/8/2010

I reserved space downstairs at the Bowery Electric for my birthday. After a misunderstanding, I spoke with Diane, the manager, and our problem was resolved amicably. The music and space were great. Everyone had a really fun time! I can't wait to go back! Pros: Great music more

THE AWFUL MANAGEMENT RUINED MY PARTY 2/7/2010

I had my birthday party here last night. In order to reserve space downstairs I needed to give my credit card number to Diane (the extremely RUDE manager), which I did a month ago. When I got to the bar the bouncer wouldn't allow me to go downstairs because they claimed that my credit card was declined. After embarrassing me in front of my friends at the door, I showed her that she had written the number down wrong! Why they didn't call me before about this concern is beyond me. I also had 2 friends waiting upstairs and they rudely asked them to leave b/c my party was at capacity (which was not the case). I called Diane the day after my party, hoping to at least get an apology, but instead she basically told me she could care less. Save yourself the aggravation, go somewhere better! more

Kick Ass Dance/Bar/Venue! 1/18/2010

my friends favorite dance club and venue in the city and have been hearing about it from her for a year now- finally came to visit for her birthday and after dinner all of us went here and had the time of our lives. I will choose no other place to dance from here on out Pros: best DJ, Drink Specials, Dance Space Cons: closes too early- 4am more

Terrible 1/9/2010

Once was fun, but this place has turned into another shitty, preppy pit of awful. Not only has the staff turned into complete a**holes, but they've switched management and it shows. If I could give anyone one piece of advice about this place, it's don't go. Pros: nothing Cons: terrible staff, poor drinks, bad music more

Cool night spot 11/30/2009

I went to a Birthday party in the downstairs function room. The venue is good and the dj was playing an interesting mix of rock and punk. I can't comment of the regular public bar but the function room leads me to believe it's worth checking out.. more

TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT 10/9/2009

This place has really made a bad move by hiring the new General manager Dianne. She is extremely unfriendly and RUDE and nothing like the manager Michael from when the bar first openend. I would not host a birthday party in this location -- merely to spite her. Even though the location is cool - the music is great- Dianne will be responsible for this place to loose a lot of future business. Pros: good music Cons: awful manager more

Best New Live Music Venue!!! 8/12/2009

This is the last great rock 'n roll venue in New York! The fact that people are only just now finding out about it makes it a great secret, usually when bars become too well known in Manhattan they start to lose their cool. The Bowery Electric is a great place to hang out, drink and rock out to live music or great DJs!! Pros: Very cool scene, lots of great rockbands, happy hours... more

Never go back 7/26/2009

Literally, this was the worst night out since moving to NYC in 2001. After having a great dinner with a friend in from LA, our party agreed to go to Bowery Electric for someone's "birthday party". After reluctantly waiting in line to enter, we descended into the revolting trifecta of bad 80's music, college freshmen drooling shots all over one another and acting rudely without abandon. I felt like I had wandered into an episode of NYC Prep, but everyone had been roofied. You couldn't pay me to go back and I advise you keep your distance. Why do I have to give this place one star to publish? Pros: Frat boys regurgitating in street Cons: Bad music, unremarkable people more

LOVE 4/29/2009

I love this place! I love the openness of the upstairs... and awesome sound system & set-up downstairs (especially for live bands). I have never had an issue with the staff or bartenders. My only complaint would be the back room (upstairs) on weekends - this is typically over populated by birthday parties. My advice would be stay away from the back room and you'll be fine. Pros: seating, drinks, 4 bathrooms, staff, location Cons: birthday party crowds (see details below) more

Editorial
  • In Short
This expansive hotel lobby bar cuts quite the luxurious picture with its tassel-trimmed, pink velvet upholstery, looming tapestries hung atop murals, hanging lanterns and sandstone fireplaces. Well-heeled patrons lounge about the low-slung furniture as if they own the place, while more serious imbibers sit on plush stools in the bartender's enclave amid taxidermy, paintings of hounds and expertly prepared Pimms. A cabinet of curiosa, including dusty bottles and books, may seem a charming detail, but it falls short of inspiring any meaningful conversation.

Hits: For such a swanky place, the staff are refreshingly unsnooty to all patrons.

Misses: Weeknights prove to be a bit barren; this is not a place to fly solo.
