Yikes! People think this is GOOD Thai? 8/17/2008

I went to this restaurant based upon the positive reviews on here... on citysearch... foregoing others closer to my hotel. I am so sorry I did. I don't know where the previous reviewers have eaten Thai before, but if they think this is good, we're all in trouble. I've had sorry thai food before, but not so sorry that I didn't even finish it. My Tom Kha was made with standard american white mushrooms, which I could have handled if the broth wasn't water and milk with a splash of coconut. They gave me mediocre hot & sour instead of Tom Yum, which I had ordered. My massaman curry was bland, even though I had ordered it ""medium"" (three out of four chili peppers according to their scale) and contained what I assume are bamboo shoots, but had some kind of unidentifiable texture I've never experienced before. I had to stop eating it. The only thing I ended up somewhat enjoying was my chicken satay, which was certainly more than edible, but far from deserving accolades. What a waste of money. Sad, sad, sad. more

Best deal in Town 2/22/2008

I am a long time customer at Thai Star and I always recommend it to everyone I know. In addition to solo visits, we often have group get togethers for dinner and often meet for special occasions. The food is excellent in quality, quantity, and price. Everything on the menu (soup, spring rolls, and entrees) is made from scratch and is authentic Thai cuisine. There are minor variations in the food from visit to visit which is due to 'made from scratch', but I have never been disappointed with any food and the taste is consistently superb. There is complimentary hot tea during the winter and extras like chopsticks, take out boxes, napkins, etc... are out where customers can grab them as needed or just ask the wait staff if you are not in a hurry. Althiugh I have never had a complaint, the only ones I have heard are too crowded / slow service during lunch, no desserts, no free refills on pop, and one person complains that it is not hot enough! Lunch is crowded because of the great food and excellent prices but that can be minimized by arriving early or by calling ahead to order (dine in or carry out). If you call ahead and specify party size, arrival time, names and food orders, you will 'cut ahead' of those still reading the menu. Regardless, I have never experienced the kind of delays mentioned elsewhere for this establishment. All restaurants have the occasional mixups and mishaps and there is always some turnover in personnel so I don't know the circumstances for the reported 'bad experiences'. My friends and I always enjoy our visits and meals at this restaurant and we each have our favorites (curry dishes and noodles for me and one person who swears by the fried rice entrees). If you like Thai food, this place will satisfy. Pros: Food quality, quantity, and taste Cons: Small 'strip mall' location more

Real Thai Food 2/4/2008

Without a doubt the food prepared at Thai Star is authentic Thai cuisine. The proprietor undoubtedly hails from Thailand.I have been dining at Thai Star for a number of years now and really haven't any complaints. Sure on some visits the service is a little slow when it's busy but it's understandable in any restaurant.\r I really don't understand the difficulty with the previous reviewer. The hot and sour soup is definately made from scratch. So are the Spring rolls. During my prior visits, while waiting for my carryout order, I have observed (through a portal in the door)the kitchen staff making the spring rolls. They cook a mixture of cabbage, carrots, and clear bean noodle. Then hand roll it in sheets of thin dough before deep frying it as it is ordered. Personally I enjoy the Noodle Pad Gai. Occasionally , I will introduce friends of mine to the restaurant. They have always been satisfied with the quantity, quality, and flavor of the dish they have been served to the point of asking me to take them there again when they are on this side of town. Pros: Taste and value more

Horrible service 1/10/2008

I don't know whether these other reviewers have had other Thai food, but this place is mediocre at BEST. We ordered carry out, and arrived to pick it up 5 minutes AFTER the quoted time, and STILL had to wait 15 minutes to get our food, and then it WASN'T EVEN HOT!!! The ""gentleman"" behind the counter charged us more than the menu price on each item, then after giving us several explanations, said it was because it was the dinner price, and not the lunch (even though we were there before WAY before the lunch cut off). The portion size was O.K. on one order, but the other was really small. The soup tasted canned, and the spring rolls tasted like they came out of a box. Good parking though... Pros: lots of available parking spaces Cons: YES more

Great Food! 3/24/2007

The best Hot & Sour Soup and Spring Rolls I've been able to find in the Metro area. The staff has always been friendly, quick and efficient, the food is always outstanding! The restaurant is certainly humble looking, but the food is worthy to be served in a palace.\r \r The lunch rush is a bit hectic, take-out is VERY busy and you might end up waiting a few minutes if dining in, calling ahead for a take-out order is certainly recommended.\r \r Word of caution: only order hot & extra hot (spice level) if you are a true chili head, if you are not a chili head it could prove a tad ""interesting!"" Pros: GREAT Thai food and excellent, friendly staff. Outstanding take-out service. Cons: Modest appearance, parking is less than ideal, dine-in lunch can experience slight delay. more

Great Food 1/5/2007

I visit this resaurant three times a week. The soup and spring rolls are excellent. The entree is better than the soup and spring rolls. A bit of a wait if you arrive during the peak lunch hour, but there is a reason for the croud...the food is awesome! Friendly, hard working wait staff. The decor displays some authentic Thai artwork. Would have never guessed it from the buildings outside appearance. Pros: Food, Service, Portions, Decor Cons: Parking more

Excellent Value for the Buck 12/3/2006

My job takes me all around SE Michigan. I eat at restaurants five days a week and 75% are of Asian cuisine. I have been patronizing Thai Star ,once or twice a month for over seven years. I have tried everything on the menu. The portion sizes are quite generous with plenty of meat in them . Spring roll and a cup of soup(Hot & sour or Tom Yum) is included with the entree. In the cooler months hot tea is complimentary(although it is self serve). My personal favorite dish is ""Gan Keow Wan""or sweet green curry. Weekday lunchtimes 11:30 to 1:00 can be very busy . Compared to other Thai restaurants that I have dined at,Thai Star gives the best Value for the Buck! Pros: Flavor ,Portion size Cons: weekday lunch crowds more

Horrible service! 10/27/2005

I visited this restaurant based Citysearch's rating (8.5 at the time). Unfortunately, all that I was able to sample was the soup and a spring roll (both decent). After waiting for a server for almost 10 minutes, and several ""please wait on me"" gestures later, we gave our order. 45 minutes later, we left the restaurant with no sight of our food. On the way out, the sever asked if we wanted take-out b/c those orders are handled right away. Nothing like pouring hot chili sauce in the open wound! The restaurant may have good food, but it is hard to tell when you never actaully get any of it to try! I would not recommend this restaurant and based on the number of customers receiving the same level of service that we did during the same lunch, many other people are going ot have the same feeling. Pros: soup Cons: service, appearance, wait staff more
