Editorial review from Citysearch 5/27/2013

Lucky to be in a city with such a dedicated teacher. I would say it's.. ""straight to the point"" yoga. No frills, no self validation talks during practice, no ""waving your arms like leaves of a tree"", and things of that sort. If that's what you're into, then maybe this isn't the place for you. But If you're dedicated to yoga, and want a more powerful, strong practice that can be carried throughout your life, at any time/place, this is the place for you. Studio is definitely not closed, as stated by the headline. It's up and running 6 days a week! more

Real yoga in Houston 4/20/2010

I practiced yoga for a couple of weeks in Kerala with a wonderful instructor a few years ago. Since then, I've been searching for a good class and instructor in the city. I've been utterly disappointed and frustrated till recently. The structure of Yannis' class is quite similar to my practice in Kerala. In the Mysore class, instead of following a class of 30-40, you can go at your own pace, which I personally think is very important. I am really glad I found the studio! If anyone wants an authentic experience of what yoga is like in India, try a class with Yannis. Just be prepared to work and sweat. Pros: Similar to yoga in India Cons: It is really difficult more

Life altering in all the best ways 4/7/2010

As someone who couldn't touch their toes less than a year ago, I'm amazed at the things my body can do now. I just started going to this studio in January, and by 30 days I was totally addicted. The intense physical workout component barely scratches the surface, however. This is a one of a kind pure inside yourself Yoga experience. It completely changed my day to day life by teaching me things about myself I never took the time to acknowledge. And, as we all know, knowledge is power! :-D This practice teaches focus, confidence, patience, and strength (in all senses of the word). If you're looking to strengthen your body, mind, and that third thing (soul, spirit, ego-whatever you wanna call it) this is the place. Yannis's teaching style is snazzy like no other, knowing when to push you and help you when it's needed, and when to back off and let you learn by doing yourself. I could babble on for pages with detailed praises of this place. For serious. Pros: Infinite! Cons: SERIOUSLY addictive more

Great studio and teachers 6/8/2007

I recently found this studio and its teachers and have benefitted greatly from their instructions. Yannis, Eric and Ed are tremendous teachers who genuinely care about teaching their students. In my opinion, ashtanga yoga is the best yoga ""style"" for students to improve and become well rounded in their yoga practice. The Led classes are very challenging, even for yoga students with years of experience coming from other styles and forms of practices. In my opinion, Houston is very lucky to have this studio and its teachers. more

Best place for the complete beginner. 7/1/2006

I took my first yoga class ever at Tejas Yoga. I am not particularly fit, strong or flexible so I was really apprehensive about starting yoga. All the teachers helped me ease into it. The progress has been gradual and slow. I felt safe and also challenged to do more at the same time. I am now trying my first headstand and there is so much to do and learn here it is amazing. I have never felt so pumped about anything. I am a convert for life. Pros: Teachers all bring out the best in you. Cons: I am addicted! more

Yoga studio with many positive attributes 6/30/2006

I have been to a number of yoga studios in various cities practicing Ashtanga Yoga, but I have to say ever since I began practicing at Tejas Yoga with Yannis as my instructor, my practice has progressed, and I have increased my stamina, flexibility and strength in so many ways! There are many people who will only choose to attend a couple of classes, missing out on the benefits of the practice. However, those that have stayed around and practice with discipline are quite amazing now! (Just check out the web site to see for yourself). Yannis is an instructor who motivates his students who want to learn. If you enjoy yoga and simply want to learn to progress in your practice, start taking yoga classes at Tejas Yoga. Pros: Easy parking, instructor is great more

A little stuffy 6/24/2006

Instructor was somewhat abrasive at times - I gather that is the preferred method of instruction here. Personally, I prefer a more toned down approach. But they were at least paying attention which is better than nothing! more

Works out the mind, body and soul 5/21/2006

I have never done anything that has affected me on so many levels. Yannis gives individual attention that I have never experienced in any other group class. It is amazing how he keeps track of his student's progress and pushes you to do more. He is genuinely invested in his student's achieving good practice. I had dabbled in yoga previous to this class but didn't really get what all the fuss was until I started with Yannis. It is truly amazing! Try it and you will see. more

the real thing... 5/21/2006

This is the only place in Houston where you can pursue Ashtanga in the way it was intended. After doing various kinds of yoga for years (quite enjoyably) I have finally discovered that the best way to make progress in one's yoga practice is to commit to this system. The instructor's commitment to his students is matched only by the commitment of his students to their practice. more

Invigorating! 5/20/2006

Ashtanga yoga with Yannis is invigorating for the body and restful for the mind. It dramatically improves flexibility, strength and cardiovascular endurance. The occasional burst of euphoria isn't so bad either. Yanniss expertise is impressive and inspiring. We are lucky to have him in Houston! Also worth mentioning--it's the best therapy my husband has found for his chronic back pain. more

the place for ashtanga in Houston 5/20/2006

Yannis is a wonderful teacher, but, as many say, the practice itself is the best teacher. And Yannis instructs his yoga students in learning how to let that happen, in learning how to learn from their own practice. Ashtanga yoga isn't easy, nor is it relaxing - and practicing with Yannis certainly isn't either! But if a student commits to it and trusts Yannis, he will help any student's practice to grow. Transformations appear. more

User review by kpoeppel 5/19/2006

Beginning Ashtanga yoga at 45 is one of the most challenging and rewarding enterprises I have undertaken. The health benefits (strength, endurance, flexibility, bone density maintenance, cardiovascular health) are well established. I have never been more at ease with myself. Yannis teaches with focused professionalism. His grasp of the Ashtanga system is exhaustive. Studying with him has given me a sound foundation and the tools to grow into a lifelong practice. What a gift!! more

What a privilege to learn from Yannis. 5/19/2006

I began going to Tejas Yoga four months ago after four years of having children and exercising little. I was immediately impressed by Yannis' ability to offer the exact right instruction at critical moments to help me get started without making me feel self-conscious about being new (and out of shape). At the same time, people who had obviously mastered the art were coming to learn even more from Yannis. Yannis's classes, although always challenging, are also always a pleasure and a privilege to attend. I gained such a sense of physical and mental well being from the physical practice of yoga that I began to take an interest in the broader discipline and, not surprisingly, Yannis is extremely knowledgable and helpful in that regard as well. I can't believe how lucky I got finding Tejas Yoga surfing the web! Pros: Gifted instructor, Challenging program, Great value more

If you're looking for a great workout... 5/17/2006

look no further. Yannis is one of the best yoga instructors I have experienced. His classes are not for the faint of heart - you must be willing to push yourself. But, as long as you stick with it, you can see improvements almost weekly. If you want to get better at ashtanga yoga, this is the place to do it. more

Transformational 5/16/2006

This class is simply the best. As a classic inflexible male, I am amazed by the transformation my body has undergone over the past few months. The first stage of my practice was mere survival, but with Yannis' guidance I have far surpassed my limited expectations. I consider Ashtanga to be a lifetime practice with very small steps between amazing rewards. I would not hesitate in recommending this class, your life might just change. more

User review by gringo42 5/12/2006

If you want to improve your asana practice this is the place to come. You may sweat alot at first because the pace is challenging and the temperature is well, ashtanga, but it will be worth it... and you actually get 90 minutes of practice out of a 90 minute class, good solid instruction with no hidden agendas. more

Tejas Ashtanga yoga 5/10/2006

Yannis is an excellent instructor for both novices and experienced yogis. I am totally amazed by my own progress under his tutelage. This class is must for the extremely inflexible--it will transform you! Pros: supportive atmosphere, fun, physically rigorous more

User review by pickles10 5/5/2006

I highly recommend this yoga and recommend it to anyone seeking a lifelong practice. It's extremely challenging, highly addictive and definately helps reduce stress. I'm not a naturally flexible person and thought I'd never be able to do the poses I'm doing now. Yannis is a great instructor- he pushes his students but is very respectful of physical limitations. more

Best Ashtanga Class in Houston 5/4/2006

Yannis' class is challenging but you can go at your own pace. Anyone can do the class from beginners to advanced students. You will get a total body workout and benefit both mentally and physically from every pose. But expect to sweat...This is not like any other yoga class you have experienced....there is truly only one Yannis. Pros: total body workout, relaxing, tough more

For those who are not afraid of a little sweat... 5/3/2006

I started here as a beginner several years ago and got hooked. The practice builds strength, flexibility, and stamina. Yannis is a top-notch and experienced teacher... the proof is in his students. more
