Rick Bayless look out! 8/18/2003

I've been to TN several times. I've never been disappointed by the food. The drinks are always made fresh and hearty by a great spirited bartender. The wait staff is wonderful, friendly, and oh soooo attractive. If you like Mexican regional food done in an authentic manner, you should try this place. The margarita's are outstanding as are the mojitos with freshly muddled mint. My favorite on the menu is the wild boar tacos, though I have tried 75 percent of the rest of the menu and have always been thrilled. Billy is doing a great job in kitchen. Christy is the most fantastic wait person on the planet and Leath makes incredible drinks. Keep up the good work guys!!! Pros: Authentic, GREAT food, GREAT drinks Cons: That I can't afford, to eat here every, day!!! more

No Salsa 7/3/2003

This is not taco bell. These guys have studied Real Mexican cuisine and perfected the best of it. Wild boar, octopus salad, wonderful deserts in a great atmosphere. Mole and chipotle to die for. Have Fun! Pros: Great flavors, Personal attention, Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

off-base user reviews 5/5/2003

Didn't live up to past user reviews. Portions were small, tacos were over priced and under flavored. Service was good and the drinks were well poured. If you've got the time to stop in for a drink, enjoy, otherwise skip it. We won't be going back. Pros: Good Drinks, Friendly Service, Nice Atmosphere Cons: Over Priced, Small Portions, Bland Chicken Taco more

So Accomodating 4/16/2003

I've been intending to eat here for months, but the timing was never right---until last night. My boyfriend and I stopped in, and had a remarkable meal. He's on a restricted diet (no red meat, low fat, etc) and our server knew her menu inside and out! We had the fresh shellfish in spicy broth--it was HUGE and wonderful. Roasted beets made the green salad noteworthy....and the tacos. Escolar in the fish tacos, sooo good, best fish taco ever! Carnitas (crispy boar) was very flavorful, both the red and green side salsas were very good without being generic. The dessert at the next table looked WONDERFUL (but not on his diet). Yummy food in a pretty place with a smart and accomodating staff. We'll be back!! Pros: Accomodating staff, Ample portions, Super food! Cons: Parking, Low lighting more

Loved It! 4/3/2003

We loved this restaurant. The taco's were just awesome. I especially loved the vegi taco. For such a small place they win on big flavor. Pros: Inexpensive, Yummy, Fun more

Value 3/26/2003

Have eaten there 4 times: Food is very good overall but avoid the ""pescado"". It's a 2.5 oz. piece of halibut and nothing else - for $12! (Waitron units are a bit arrogant.) Pros: food quality, new male bartender more

Ok, but.... 3/22/2003

I wouldn't wait in line to eat here, and am not really sure about all the stellar reviews. The food was good, and tasted fresh, but was nothing to brag about, or wait in line for. Portions were average, service was good, drinks are overpriced. Seems kind of ""faddish"" to me. We got there early and didn't have to wait, but there was a line for seats before we left. Pros: Fresh taste, Service Cons: Crowded, Expensive drinks more

One of a few latin brightspots 3/7/2003

Truly unique for PDX or anywhere else. Start with a glass of fresh glass of OJ, which they squeeze right in front of you if sitting at the cool bar. The tacos were good, go for the fish. The classic chip-based entree was creative and tasty. Salsas could have been spicier, but nevertheless good. more

Always a hit 3/3/2003

As one of my favorite restaurants, it's hard for Taqueria Nueve to go wrong. Great margaritas, fresh, flavorful food and a friendly staff. Keep up the good work! more

Yum! 2/20/2003

While at first put off by the long wait and crowds, I finally arrived early one night to see what all the fuss was about. The atmosphere is nice. A little noisy at times, and I wouldn't recommend sitting in the bar area. The crowd waiting often overflows and ends up hovering over the diners in this part of the restaurant. The food is wonderful! And, I might add, very reasonably priced. I've since been back five or six times with friends, and have never tasted anything that wasn't superlative to the other options for mexican throughout Portland. The fish tacos are absolutely the best, with the fish changing daily for variety. The margaritas are fresh squeezed and not overly sweet as in many restaurants, and the octopus cocktail is a unique treat. Overall, if you can make it in early, or get a reservation, I highly recommend this restaurant. Pros: great food, great drinks, reasonable prices Cons: long wait, noisy more

Innovative Mexican 2/4/2003

Billy does it right! This is not your typical Mexican food. Newly remodeled, almost Mediterranean decor. The expert staff is attentive and prompt without being over bearing. The guys in the kitchen have it really dialed in. This some of the most innovative food I have tried. I cant wait to come back to try some of the other menu selections and specials. You must arrive before 6PM or youll have to wait because they only take reservations for parties 6 or more. Pros: Inovative Food, Super Sevice Cons: Crowded After 6PM more

too bad;too trendy 2/1/2003

High hopes. Friends w/a $50 gift cert. Waited one hour, 45 minutes for a table. why? Friends insisted; octopus cocktail from prev. visit lived large in our minds. Reality. Great mussels; guac.;wild boar tacos. Nice, normal portions...unfortunately priced like same food at double the portion size. Despite insistence that cocktel de pulpo had NEVER changed; did not have same soft flavor as before-still good, just not great. And yes, the new space is all soft pinks like a foofy boutique..Where'd the taqueria go? Pros: good food, very trendy, full bar Cons: bland mojitos, parking nightmare, long wait/no comps. more

Mexican with a Northwest Flair 1/30/2003

This is Mexican with a Northwest flair. However, it is much more authentic than most Mexican restaurants. The food is sophistacated as Mexican cuisine truly is. I highly reccomend the Bistec en salsa Oaxaquena, this is the tastiest beef I have ever had! For vegitarians the flor de calabasas and black beans are excellent as well - honestly the tastiest black beans around. If you are in the mood for a fiesta the Mojito's (a refreshing minty, lime and sugary drink) does great with the meal. The owners who are brothers are also hard at work, but always friendly and eager to hear your feedback. Overall an excellent establishment that is here to stay! Pros: authentic Mexican, delicious, friendly more

The best Mexican food in Portland! 1/24/2003

As an avid lover of mexican food,I eat out at least twice a week(usually mexican food.Hands down this is the best spot in town.Noboby uses finer ingredients, and the value for your dollar is amazing.Hats off to these dedicated people! Joe C., Portland Pros: Inexpesive, Fresh, Cutting edge Cons: Crowded more

We have been eating here since they opened and have been exceedingly pleased with the quality and affordability, it is one of our favorite places. The recent remodel has greatly improved the overall ambience. We always recomend this resturant to friends and family. Pros: excellant food, festive atmosphere more

little gem in P-town 12/24/2002

One of the places we miss most since moving away from Portland! So happy to see you made the numero uno rating nation wide! You deserve it! A great group of people running this place, making great healthy food and serving it up with a smile. Keep up the good work- we miss you! Pros: inexpensive, unpretentious, hip Cons: crowded at times more

Comida increible 11/11/2002

This restaurant is FABULOSO!!!!! The margaritas are great and I love their fish tacos. Really fun place to take hungry friends! Pros: GREAT fish tacos!, Great drinks, good service Cons: A little small more

Consistently Wonderful 11/4/2002

Taqueria Nueve is the most consistently wonderful restaurant that I have been to, and I eat out a lot. The menu is authentic and full of wonderful choices if you are not a vegetarian. The sides are not to be missed, especially the vegetables. Be brave and order the octopus cocktail - you'll be glad that you did. The margaritas have spoiled me; now no other restaurant's can compare. The service is always friendly and knowledgable, and they are always nice to my son and bring out a little something for him early. I wish it wasn't so popular so I wouldn't have to wait, but this place is too good to be kept a secret! I have eaten at TN at least twice per month for years and have yet to be disappointed. Pros: wild boar tacos, great drinks, friendly service Cons: wait for a table, kind of loud more

Overhyped 10/18/2002

Wow, are those, like, French Tacos or something? C'mon, guys, it's a taco stand, can we do away with the ""Nueve"" pretensions? This place caters to folks who flock to any new opening in one of the ""cool"" neighborhoods. They ought to call it ""The Lemming Cafe"". If this keeps up I might as well move to the 'burbs. more

Amazing food and margaritas 10/15/2002

I've been to Taqueria Nueve about 5 times now and I'm always amazed. You can tell the people that work there are impressed with the food and they are excited about serving you. The drinks are poured to perfection. Taqueria Nueve has been so consistant is one of my favorite restaurants. Weekends usually have a wait, but you can have a drink at the bar or get a drink nearby. Pros: Amazing food, Good service, Strong drinks more
