Best

I have been going here since my son was 10 and also one that closed by the same owners on the south side......

Worst

I'm not a picky or highly critical eater whatsoever. But I've eaten at Indian restaurants in many places in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, New England, England, etc., and...

I have loved this restuarant for many years!!!! 10/19/2010

I cannot go very long without craving the excellent goat curry! I love all of the chicken dishes. I love the variety with all of the vegetarian dishes in the start of the buffet line and the meat dishes at the end. I love the soups and the flat bread. I usually finish with some fruit and rice pudding. I also sincerely appreciate the low all you can eat price!!!! I think I need to go eat some right now!!!!!! See you in the all you can eat line!!!! more

Worst Indian food ever 9/23/2010

Worst Indian Restaurant Ever eaten!!! The reatsurant space is cramped up & couple of booths are there & only 2 people can sit in them. The restroom in this restaurant was more spacious compared to the restaurant space. Shame for the kind of food this restaurant prepares & calls it Indian food & worst customer service.... We ordered Vegetable Biriyani, Naan, Mattar Paneer, Malai Kofta,Onion Kulcha. Only 1 server/cashier, 1 greeter who cannot even speak English- so useless to be in such a position.Cannot answer anything when asked about menu. The one server was doing everything. I guess that's why he didn't even care when we said that we did not the Biriyani & he said that's how we make it here. What a kind of answer for developing business. Usually in any restaurant/Store here in US except this one when a customer says they are not satisfied with an item or product they do charge them & offer to provide a different product. Here they charged us & inspite of us telling that we do not want the Biriyani when they offered to remake it & order something. They brought it back with lots of oil & lots of chilli powder & charged us. The Biriyani rice did not look like it was made from Basmati rice(but apparently it was) as the rice was broken & looked like it was made from a Biriyani paste like the one we get in Indian groceries. Tasteless,Odorless which are not the qualities of a good Biriyani. They have decorations of Moghuls & Biriyani is from the Moghuls... Shame on you guys..... The raita was so sour. I think they must have made it in the morning & left it out for the buffet & brought the same thing back as they did not want to eat themselves & did not want to throw it away & wanted to make money on it. The naan was cold and not so soft ,onion kulcha & mattar paneer were average & malai kofta was below average as kofta did not tast like kofta but like bonda, the gravy wasn't that tasteful.... BTW, the server brought a rice pudding saying that it was on them for the Biriyani issue which was also tasteless & odorless as it was old one too.. We should have stepped out when we saw very less crowd. Never ever are we going to step into this restaurant again... And we would not recommend to anyone this restaurant even if there no Indian restaurant other this one. No wonder that being one of the oldest restaurants (as they claim) in austin , it does not the food critics say that it is the best. Clay pit is far better than this one.... more

Avoid the buffet. Order off the menu. 4/27/2010

My boyfriend is a vegetarian and I'm an omnivore, so finding places that suit us both and it's real expensive can be a challenge. Enter Taj Palace! They have great vegetarian dishes as well as foods for carnivores (me me me). Their curry-smothred cheese (forgot the name) is awesome. The staff there is so sweet, too. I took my grandpa & they gave us wine, salad and dessert free-of-charge. It was his first time eating Indian food and he loved it, but was bowled over by the kindness and awesome service! I just don't like bufets anywhere, to be fair. I think they nasty and you don't know who just sneezed on whatever, so no thanks to the buffet but yes yes yes to the menu items! Pros: Great off-menu items. Cons: The buffet just sits there and is gross! more

My life is better from eating here 2/27/2010

3 things that have suprised me tonight: 1) I do NOT eat Indian food but went here cause Pappadeauxs was a madhouse and the movie theatre was right next door 2) I do NOT eat spicy food but ordered the spicy chicken curry dish anyway for some odd reason. 3) I am so impressed by the meal that I created an account to write a review at 4 AM from my phone. My spouse and I walked in to eat because I had already had dinner and he loves indian food. I would never go with him to eat it in the past. I ordered the spicy curry chicken anyway just cause I figured I should stop being picky and just try it. I cannot stop thinking about the meal I ate 8 hours ago. I'm not over-weight, I'm just so impressed by what I ate that I have to share it with someone and my husband is sick of me talking. I nearly cried as I ate...it was that good. I called my friend, who is from India, and told her immediately cause she knows i don't eat Indian food. She told me if I thought this was good I should "try the clay pit restaurant." I then told her that she was being stupid and that I would kidnap and hog-tie her so I could shovel this amazing food in her mouth. Then she hung up on me. I don't care how good the clay pit is, I am only going to go here and it will probably be tomorrow. I can understand that people have had bad experiences here and just want to write a review so they can "save us" from a "horrible experience." I'm here to say those people are crazy and probably have no communication skills; That is why they got put in the perdicament they had. This food is so good that I want to slap someone across the face. Maybe I sound like a person who hasn't had a meal in 5 years...maybe someone slipped crack in the food. Whatever it is, I don't care. This place is amazing! Pros: Everything Cons: Small portions more

STAY AWAY IF YOU HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES!!!? 1/30/2010

I still cannot believe how ridiculous of an experience I had interacting with the owners of this restaurant. I ordered the plain curry dish and explained about my severe allergy to tree nuts. The woman reassured me there are no nuts in it. She will make sure to emphasize this to the chef and she deals with food allergies all the time. After I started eating my dinner, I began having an allergic reaction, needed my epi-pen, went to the hospital, whole 9 yards. Well, I called them the next day and spoke to the owner. He said he would make a note of it and if it happens more in the future, then he will look into it but that people with food allergies come in all the time and that there must have been "something in the air" that caused me to the have the allergic reaction. "SOMETHING IN THE AIR!" Pros: cool beaded art Cons: rude owners, food that you cannot trust to be safe more

Authentic Indian 11/18/2009

The best Makhni Chicken ever. Love getting it for take out and even have enough for lunch the next day. I have been to their lunch buffet as well and it is good but a little pricey for me. Naan bread is fluffy and crispy at the same time, besides fresh. Pros: Best Makhni Chicken Cons: Buffet a little pricey more
