Best

I have taken many guests here when they come to visit. A warm and welcoming environment, with good home cooking. Tried many dishes, but the tried and true chicken and dumblings ...

Worst

I like the Chicken and dumplings. I think they do that particular dish well. But... The waitress took our order, delivered our main meal, and collected our payment and tip. ...

Relax! 10/2/2002

If you like simple, great food, Tad's is for you. The only thing I don't like about Tad's is I always order the same things because I like them so much. The Prime Rib melts in your mouth and seems much larger than the menu states. The salmon is always nicely browned on the outside, fluffy and moist inside. For dessert, you HAVE to try the bread pudding!!! But the BEST thing about Tad's is the view. You can just sit, eat, and RELAX! Pros: great food-always, reasonable prices, beautiful setting Cons: inconsistant service, parking more

cant wait to return 9/10/2002

I was very pleasantly surprised when I went to Tad's. I was there years ago and it was very run down. The atmosphere was wonderful. If the weather is nice, sit in dining room where they open all the windows. The food was great, even the gravy, which could be improved upon, but my husband loved it. He likes dumplings too. Totally worth the drive. Pros: atmosphere, food, service Cons: too hot, tables old, no reservations more

When summer is over... 9/7/2002

We've been dining at Tad's for over 10 years which is when we first moved to Troutdale. We like going out to Tad's when the summer is over and the tourists die off. For 10 years we've had superb food and service on the beautiful Sandy River...and the most perfectly cooked razor clams you will ever eat! The only thing missing is Margaret (who worked at Tad's for 44 years) whacking our table and telling us no dessert unless we finish our green beans!! However, we enjoy all of the staff and like seeing the same faces over and over again! Pros: on the Sandy River, delicious food, friendly good service Cons: not a one!! more

Chick Dump! 8/15/2002

Their neon sign was partially out on my last visit so it read ""Tad's Chick Dump""! This place is an institution...Sure the food's not great, but it's OK. You'll be hard pressed to find atmosphere in Portland anything close to what Tad's provides. Although open year round, the summer months are especially busy due to the location...right on the Sandy River. Herons fly by the window, raccoons walk right up to the porch outside the downstairs bar. A must to show out-of-town guests. Pros: Affordable, Great Location Cons: Crowded, Food Could Be Better more

Beautiful view, decent food... 7/28/2002

This was my first visit to Tad's and it was a nice experience. It was a beautiful summer day and we had an excellent table on the patio that overlooked the river. The wait was approximately 20 minutes for a table, which didn't bother me, but the parking was horrific! It is a very busy place, and the service is lacking because of it. Our waitress was friendly and informed, but not as attentive as I would have liked. I had the fish and chips, which was decent. The salmon chowder was great. I had a Cosmopolitan to drink and it was quite good, but very small. Overall, the food and service were just ok, but the view alone made it worth my while. Pros: Beautiful River View, Outside Patio Seating Cons: Crowded, Poor parking, Loud atmosphere more

Time Warp 7/24/2002

Going to Tad's is like stepping into a time warp. The decor, the servers and the food doesn't look like it's changed since it opened. The food may not blow you away, but it's good, and most things taste homemade. Try the fried chicken, which is better than the chicken and dumplings. Being so off the beaten path on the Sandy River, you wouldn't expect crowds, but it's usually packed, with a wait. Great place to take grandparents. Pros: Sandy River location Cons: crowded, long waits more

long time favorite 7/23/2002

I've been going to Tad's for decades. The food is great (although I don't get the dumplings, they're just too heavy compared to my mom's!), and the service and location is outstanding. And best of all, you can go there when you look completely bedraggled after falling the stream at Oneonta Gorge. more

Prime rib to drool over 6/20/2002

Out of all the places I've had prime rib this is the best. And it's not just the steak that makes it so good. You can't match Tad's green beans! Whatever they did to them to make them so good I can't duplicate at home. The drinks aren't bad either. Try their alabama slamma... Not many places can make them right but Tad's can. And the view isn't bad either. Pros: great food, nice atmosphere, good drinks Cons: need reservations, long drive, crowded more
