This is without doubt the best Indian restaurant in Portland, OR. Thus, on a national scale, it is a little below average, say 4/10 or so. Pros: Not offensive food; recogniza...

Great food AND service!! 11/3/2006

Excellent authentic indian food. Friendly service. One of my favorite resturaunts in town! No complaints. Pros: Food, service Cons: - more

Fabulous service, average food 9/26/2006

Wonderful, wonderful staff. Very attentive and professional. Unfortunately, just average food. We went in for lunch buffet and found very little variety offered. When we sat down to eat, the food was okay. Nothing had much flare or flavor, but it wasn't bad either. Price was okay so I guess it's a place for an average meal at an average price. Pros: Nice ambience, service and staff. Cons: Average food. more

Best Indian Food around 7/20/2006

One the best places i like to hang out, its a cool place, i have been around to all of their locations, evryone is different isd their own sense, but food is excellent where ever you go. I had been to their Hillboro restaurant last week, and it was realli good. There is this new waiter upthere, whos realli cute !!!!!! Pros: Excellent Indian Food and have improved on serving Cons: Still neeeds some improvement on envitonment more

Best Indian Buffet in town !!!!! 1/9/2006

For 8 bucks a pop you can satisfy even the biggest craving for home cooked indian fare. With endless naan and fluffy basmati rice to accompany a variety of meat and vegetarian dishes it is a culianry delight. Help yourself to generous portions of 3 chutney flavors, chunky raita and lentil soup and waddle out the door with only a small dent in your wallet. The ambiance is nice enough to take a date with cozy seating in back, but also big enough to accomodate an impressive business lunch. Take your friends!! Best indian buffet in town!!! ( and no - i dont work there!! ) Pros: great value, great food, speedy service more

My terrible experience at Swagath on 10/25/05 10/24/2005

Got what I need and sat on the chair. Lady from the counter kept me water with ice by the time I went to the chair. I was looking for th waiter for water with no ice. He was just ignoring me couple of times, chatting with another waiter. When he was passing by seat and I said "Can I get water with no ice please". He bent and saw my glass and said "....There are just two pieces of ice man." and went away sharking his head carelessly. I was very upset and stood over. I said to the lady "I am not going to eat here. Do you want me to pay for the plate" (I just took one byte before all this happened). She said no need to pay. I just walked out. No body felt responsible for what happened there. Cons: I won't go there agai more

Swagat's 9/4/2005

Very popular in the area, if you're just dipping your toes into Indian cuisine (OK, I could have phrased that better, but you get the idea) then this is an excellent place to start, because every day they have an all-you-can eat buffet for about $8. It includes about a dozen items, and from that you should get an excellent idea if the food is for you, and if so, what in particular you like about it. more

Excellent Indian Food 7/20/2005

This was my first time dining at Swagat and I was pleasantly suprised. The prices are great, the portions are filling, and the food tastes great. It satisfied my craving for Indian food in a big way! The host was slightly rude and callous but our waiter was excellent. The bathrooms are sort of dirty and the decor leaves much to be desired, YET the food is the draw and it is very good. more

Great food 6/8/2005

What can I say--I love this place! Such good food--the tandoori chicken and chicken tikka masala are my absolute favorites--better than any other Indian place I've tried more

Average place 3/15/2005

The host wasn't very friendly. He didn't smile or respond when we said thanks...neither did the waiter. The food was alright. We had the lunch buffet. This is the first time my husband and I tried Indian food. We love spicy food and curry so we decided to give this place a try with all the reviews of it having great food despite the lousy service. Nothing was really spicy and everything just tasted okay. I wish there were a little more meat dishes and more variety of vegetables. I wouldn't say the food was horrible but it wasn't amazing either, just average. We aren't going to go back to this place again but will definitely try another indian restaurant. Pros: Inexpensive Cons: Host has bad manners, Not much meat more

Good indian food? 3/14/2005

I'm at a loss for words. My husband and I moved up here from SF, Ca. Coming from the Bay area where Fremont if often called Little New Delhi. Once we moved to this gorgeous town, we were constantly asking our friends, "Where can we get good indian food?" Each person kept coming up with "Swagat's" On that note, we went. We ate there once, we won't be going back. At times I considering even trading our friends for new ones or at least have their taste buds checked. The food tasted bland in our opinion. It keeps busy because people seem to enjoy it, just happens we're not one of them. more

Mainstream but delicious~! 12/17/2002

Yes, Swagat may be the most American friendly Indian cuisine here in Portland, but it is still consistantly the best! We have been eating here since they opened many years ago, often twice a week, and have only been disappointed a few times. We have taken to going the "take-out" route, as the wait-staff has become more and more unreliable. But the food... yes, always reliable. And the cooks are the real thing. More often than not, we will request a special dish not on the menu. This is never a problem with the cooks (however, it may take some convincing the part of the waitstaff). We suggest Swagat as a starting point for anyone not familiar with Indian cuisine. Although we frequent many Indian restaurants in Portland, Swagat will always be our old reliable. Just writing this review makes me hungry... Pros: Reliable food!, Prompt service!, Delicious! Cons: Dumbed down for USA, IHOP atmosphere., Waitstaff unhelpful~ more

Spicy Indian buffet 8/27/2002

Very good, spicy Indian food in NW Portland. The buffet is a nice deal for lunch... the only problem is stopping! more

Mmmm 7/31/2002

Is always the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Swagat. The lunch buffet is wonderful because of all of the emphasis on entrees instead of appetizers! The naan is absolutely fantastic, as is the chicken Makhani. The lamb dishes could use some work but that is my only real complaint. Pros: spacious interior Cons: limited parking more

Average 6/25/2002

As with most Indian restaurants, the deal is the buffet. This one's average, as it was missing samosas, pakoras, spinach and a dessert variety. However, what was offered was decent. Cons: hostess more

Excellent food for the price. Decor is what you'd expect, but the food is well above par and the staff is very friendly. Go for it! more

Great food, value and atmosphere 5/22/2002

I took my wife to the Swagat on Lovejoy St., on recommendation of an Indian friend (Satya from Andrah, Hyderabad) who prefers South Indian cuisine. He had heard (from other Indians living here) that Swagat was the best local restaurant for that style cooking. I would have to agree, and we've been back several times. Yesterday, I took my wife there for the lunch buffet, and it was great! My wife was amazed at the value. (P.S., the lamb vindaloo at dinnertime is particularly spicy and delicious!) more
