The BEST Sushi Restaurant in California!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 12/21/2008

If you love Sushi and knows good Sushi, this is the place to go! I lived in Japan for 10 years and I was a food critic of Japanese food. I went to every sushi place in southern california to find the real taste that I had in Japan, but it was not easy.. till I found this place! They have the FRESHEST seafood!! And the chefs are all Japanese you know that means it's real! And they get most of the fish from Japan daily!!! The head chef Frank has been a sushi chef for more than 30 years! more

Favorite OC sit down sushi house. 10/12/2008

Having had the chance to try dozens of sushi restaurants in the U.S.A. and Canada I can say that Sushi Mimi is one of the best that I have been to. Appetizers (usually for me the shrimp and veg tampura) are hot and delicious. The sushi fish used is always very fresh (no fishy scent) and high quality (very buttery, little or no chewiness). The fish cut for sushi pieces are decent size (unlike certain buffet style sushi stops which shall remain nameless). There is an excellent assortment of expected sushi types as well as custom sushi rolls. The service is always top notch; you are greeted (sometimes by the entire staff), seated and drink orders taken promptly, the food arrives very quickly (I have waited for over an hour at other restaurants) and servers remain attentive throughout the rest of your meal. The restaurant ambiance is open and cheery but still cozy and authentic feeling. I have yet to go on any evening (out of many) where the quality and service weren't as described. I also have yet to go where the rest of the tables weren't full of appreciative Japanese people. If it passes the test for palates of native eaters, that's usually a very good sign, but as a non-Japanese person, Sushi Mimi certainly far surpasses my expectations. Pros: Incredible sushi, tasty warm dishes, awesome friendly service. Cons: Smaller size might mean waiting during busy weekend rush. more

True Japanese Cuisine 5/19/2008

The best Sushi place. Forget the glitzy, pricey, chic restaurants out there... this is the real deal (owned by a Japanese couple). If you come to this place please do not insult the sushi chef by ordering the usual American sushi (Rolls). Try something authentic and let the sushi chef teach you a bit of Japanese culture. It is a fun and cozy place. The price is amazingly comfortable and if you enjoy culture and trying new things- this is the place. Try to go for early dinner (5pm) to avoid crowds. Pros: Japanese owned Sushi restaurant Cons: Small place, not for large crowds more

fresh sashimi, cozy ambience 7/9/2006

didn't realize it's owned by previous owners of Koto 'til I read the other reviews. now it makes more sense that the food here is great. ambience is like many small japanese restaurants in OC...cozy. you know it's good when you walk in and see many Japanese customers there. Pros: fresh, fresh, fresh Cons: only one waitress during lunch hour, so expect to wait more

former KOTO restaurant. everything tastes SO GOOD 11/26/2005

Koto was located in Newport Beach, and the best Japanese restaurant in OC for more than 12 years. I missed KOTO so much and when I found out that Koto owners opened a new Japanese restaurant, I went there, and the taste is the same and just great. It will definitely going to be the hot spot, highly recommended for anyone who missed Koto. more

Best sushi in OC 8/12/2005

The sushi here is definately one of the best in OC. The owners are actually the people that ran Koto which was the high-end, very popular, Japanese restaurant in Irvine. If you are looking for delicious, really fresh sushi, I highly recommend this place. Their rolls are delicious...highly reccomend the spicy scallop and spicy tuna rolls. If you can splurg a little, I recommend you sit at the sushi bar and ask the chef to do an ""omakase"" which is when you have the chef serve you his specials (sushi & sashimi). Yummy!! more
