The not so perfect birthday evening. 4/1/2008

In the process of planning my birthday dinner for a party of 20 people I spoke with the manager (Benny) of Sushi Hai/ Hair Bar no less than 4 times and have 2 emailed confirmations of the reservation sitting in my inbox, yet when my party arrived my reservation was ?lost.? The staff hastily threw together 4 tables in the bar and had us sit there. The spot I had originally reserved was already taken by a rowdy birthday party that cat-called us every time anyone had to walk past them to the restroom. The sushi was mediocre and over priced (this place is no Sushi-Den and the price should reflect it!) and there was not one thing on the menu that the two non-fish eating people in my party could enjoy. The waitress was stressed-out and overwhelmed and it took 35 minutes to FINALLY get our bill. While we were waiting, the bar began to fill and several people literally stared us down waiting for us to get up from our tables. I tried my best to keep a smile on my face as my invited guest kept getting more and more frustrated. The bill finally arrived and of course was a mess and the waitress didn?t do much to straighten things out. You would think with a combined total of $600 she would have been a little nicer, but she wasn?t. The moment we stood up, a group of 4 people jumped onto the end of our table before we had even left our seats and put on our coats. \r \r All around it was a nightmare. I made the reservations 3 weeks prior to my dinner and don?t understand how I can speak with their manager and email him that many times and still have him ?lose? the reservation. I don?t understand the need for people to stare us down while we are trying to enjoy our meal (Hello people - we?re trying to eat!), and I truly don?t understand why more of an effort wasn?t made to make sure we were happy when we left. The next time I have a dinner party, it will be somewhere else that will appreciate the $600 spent not including the 20% tip to our grouchy, overwhelmed waitress!\r Pros: The trendy neighborhood Cons: The staff, the food, the pretentious crowd more

Great new bar! 3/8/2008

I never write reviews on here, but I really have to this time. I threw my girlfriend a birthday party on Friday night and it was fantastic. The New Hai Bar is a great addition to the Highlands! The place has a cool look, didn't get super crowded, played good music (and not so loud that you can't talk to ppl) and drink prices were reasonable. Everyone had a great time. We will definitely be back (and try the sushi b/c it looked great as well). Thanks Sam and Kelly! \r \r Pros: great atmosphere more

Best Sushi 3/7/2008

I highly recommend this place to you all. The service was great and the food was even better. The drinks were amazing. I'm new to the Highlands and so happy I found this place. I can't wait to go back. Pros: Everything more

Terrible Service 3/5/2008

I completely agree with the previous review. This place is in a great location, the ambiance is great and the sushi is good, which explains why it is still around. The first time I went, I was impressed with some of their sushi rolls. My pleasure with the food was quickly ruined by the service! Words can't express how terrible it was. We arrived on the later side, but were just finishing our food around 10:40 (they close at 11) and the waitstaff was very rude, yelling from the bar that they are closing. We couldn't believe it! The second time I went, I was very cautious about going, but as the previous entry states, they win by default because of their location. We were in the Highlands and wanted sushi, so we sucked it up and decided to give it another try. We ordered our drinks and as the waitress brought them to us, spilled one glass of red wine, which spilled on my 2 friends. Instead of apologizing, she insisted that none of the red wine got on them. I couldnl't believe that someone who works in the service industry would say that. Especially when one of my friends was wearing a white silk top and you could CLEARLY see spots of red on it. She never apologized or anything. She brought another tables food to us. When our drinks were empty, she never asked us if we wanted another. She ignored us, so we had to grab another server to help us. Our sushi was brought to us very late, but it was good. I will NEVER EVER go back to this place and don't reccomend going. If you do go, please expect the worst servise you will ever encounter in your life! There are several good sushi restaurants in Denver that offer great service, so don't bother with Sushi Hai!! If you must eat here, get it to go! Pros: The Las Vegas Roll (don't eat in, but order in to go) Cons: The service is AWFUL!!!! more

Great sushi, Horrible service, Lazy waitstaff 3/3/2008

Sushi Hai is one of those places wins by default. It is conveniently located in the highlands and is easy to get a reservation. The food is great, some of the best around and, the atmosphere is outstanding. However, as many times as i've been there (and i've been there a lot) the service has been THE WORST. I don't know how a restaurant that does that volume of business can have such bad waiters. Every waiter that I have had seemed put out when you ask them for something. They seem to be more concerned with their looks in their yuppie upscale bar then serving the people that are dropping 100 bucks on a two top dinner. Our waitress brought our drinks and then disappeared. She dropped our food without any utensils and walked away. When we asked for some utensils and soy sauce she brought a bottle with less then a quarter of a bottle left. When we asked for more we got attitude. She dropped the check on us without asking if we wanted anything else.(we all know what that means) When I asked the waitress to break the the large bill that I had to pay with, I was told to go to the bar for change. I had been a waiter for may years and I was appalled to the point that I just wanted to leave. Its too bad that such a great restaurant has such bad service. Start hustling and earn the money that patrons leave for you. \r Your here to serve. \r Welcome to your job.\r My suggestion, GET IT TO GO! Pros: atmosphere Cons: horrible service, lazy waitstaff more

Best Sushi In Denver Hands Down 2/16/2008

My Wife and I recently had dinner at Sushi Hai, and I was very impressed. Right Once we walked in the door we were welcomed by the sushi chefs. We sat at the sushi bar in front of amazingly nice chefs. The Wine list was extensive and impressive. Our chef went on to make us a special roll consisting of assorted fish rolled up in a cucumber, topped with a spicy/tangy soy sauce This was by far the most amazing sushi I have ever had. We have sat in front of him a few times and still cant remember his name. Dark Brown Gel'd Hair. I highly advise sitting with him. The fish was amazingly fresh, The Head Chef was telling us that the majority of their fish on Fridays and Saturdays is flown in from Hawaii. If you are ever thinking about having sushi, Sushi Hai is worth a drive. Not quite a place for a romantic night. Lots of people go there and it gets loud. Great place for a fun filled evening.\r \r Pros: Great Sushi, and Great Sushi Chefs Cons: Loud, Busy, and Cold more

LONG Wait Time!!! 1/26/2008

We had to wait 20 minutes before someone took our drink order. We ordered green tea that tasted WAY over steeped. Then once we ordered our three Sushi rolls it took at least an hour before it was brought to us. We spent almost two hours at this restaurant and spent about 10 minutes eating. So basically it was all waiting. The Sushi was OK. I have had way better, but it is not worth the wait time at all. I will never go back and I will not recommend this place either. If you do decide to go here be prepared to spend a lot of time hanging out without food. Pros: The Sushi was alright. Cons: Wait. Wait. Wait. more

Top rated denver sushi 11/2/2007

This has to be my favorite sushi place I have found in Colorado so far. I have been there twice now and both times have been superb. My wife and I like to stick to the Maki and theirs is definitely memorable. There is one roll that I can't remember the name of but it has filet mignon inside which is different and fantastic. The wine and beer selection are fine and it is a bonus that I can walk to this place which is in the cool Highlands neighborhood. more

Avoid pretty much at all costs 10/7/2007

I have read some other reviews and gave this place a try. It was horrible I went with a friend and we both ordered a salad mine got there 10 minutes before hers! Then and this is what did this entire experience in for me the food runner (who clearly had no business working in a restaurant) brought us the wrong order of sashimi, which would not be so bad but she came back a few minutes later took it off our table and served to someone else! This destroyed the whole meal for us. The fish was good, our actual waitress was very nice but this girl just ruined everything. I would say to try this place but who knows where your food may come from. Pros: Fresh Fish Cons: Service more

Great food, poor staff 8/26/2007

We have taken my family to Sushi Hai a number of times and have found both the quality of the food (very good) and the quality of the staff (poor) to be consistent. I recommend reservations - even though when you call you might be told you don't need them - because the snotty hostess usually takes a while to meander away and find you a place to sit. They have twice lost our reservations, so get a name when you call. The place is loud and it is difficult to hear your dining companions, and the service is slow. That said, the food has been consistently great, with interesting and tasty rolls and fresh fish, and the hot green tea is awesome. If you can get past the hostess who hasn't yet lost her teenage attitude, the food will be very good. We're getting really tired of the poor staff though; they may lose us no matter how good the food is if that doesn't improve soon. Pros: Great rolls and hot tea; consistently yummy Cons: Loud; Unfriendly hostess; slow more

A hidden gem. You won't be disappointed. 4/27/2007

I've been to Sushi Hai easily a dozen dimes and it never disappoints. They have some interesting variations (the Surf & Turf roll, and Black Manba roll) that are absolutely delicious, even for a non-adventurous sushi eater like me. Their stand-bys (spicy tuna, cali rolls) have been perfected. The fish is fresh, the service is friendly, knowledgable and attentive (our water glasses were never left more than half empty). Try it. You won't be disappointed. Pros: The food, the service, the prices more

Consistent Quality 4/21/2007

We have been going to Sushi Hai since it opened and although it is not the best sushi in town, it is one of the most consistent. I also do think that is close to the best quality in town. The nigri sushi always seems fresh and the rolls are great too. I also like how the waitstaff can usually recommend small twists to the rolls that really make them interesting without sacrificing the way it should taste - Ex. adding strawberries. The waitstaff has always been polite and helpful as well, and I have never had a bad experience with them. The Hai Bar below does gets a little strange late at night, but it doesn't affect the restaurant. All in all, given the consistency and the quality of the food and the service-oriented waitstaff, I think this is one of the best sushi places in town. Pros: Never had to wait long, consistency, waitstaff, quality Cons: Hai Bar Below more

Lacking Service 4/20/2007

The sushi rolls are excellent at Sushi Hai but the service is awful!! Long wait for drinks, long wait for food, and this was a Wednesday night! The food is good though, great atmosphere but the service needs work. Pros: Ambience Cons: Slooooow service more

Such bad service that I will never go back or recommend! 4/16/2007

Worst service I have had in Denver in a long time. First- the staff ignored us (and others) after we entered Sushi Hai. We sat at the bar for a drink before dinner and the waiter was slow and unresponsive. Then, after we moved to a table for dinner, everything took an unbelievably long time- the worst was 45 minutes to get our sushi! This was on a Sunday night too when they were not terribly busy. Then the waitress was unsure what some of our Sushi was. Our waitress was also very unknowledgeable about the Sakes that were available. We had not ordered enough sushi for the four of us but because of the slow service and our time constraints, we did not have time to order more. So we left hungry and completely dissatisfied. Never again. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: Worst service in Denver more

Beware! 3/26/2007

The service is not good. Ate sushi there and got a fish bone stuck in my tough. The sad part about it is that the sushi is good and the atmosphere is great. more

Best Sushi I've had since leaving LA's Sushi Roku and Koi! 1/24/2007

Maybe every time I've gone the Chef is on the money but here is why it?s the best. The rolls are small in size which they are supposed to be so you can fit them in your mouth in one bite. The rolls are inventive with a great, complementing mix of flavors. The calamari is the best I've ever had anywhere in my travels! I do agree with the last reviewer and his statement about the spicy tuna, it's just not that great. Now I haven't made it to Sushi Den but so far this place beats out most of the top reviewed places I've tried here in Denver. Pros: Great quality Sushi, Service is very attentive Cons: Incredibly loud more

Spicy Tuna Roll More Like Poo Roll 1/19/2007

Being residents of Highlands, we have tried SushHai several times. Unfortunately, each time is more disappointing. The fish is great, but the rice is weird and often ruins any chance of experiencing an enjoyable meal. We have had hard rice, crumbling rice, and wet rice. Our first dinner at SushiHai (July) was great, everything about it. Then we had lunch (August)?the rice was undercooked and got stuck in our teeth. The surf and turf roll (October) tasted like an astro-turf roll with the rice barely clinging to the sushi. Most recently, (January) the sushi was so sticky and wet that the soy sauce couldn?t penetrate the gooey layer. The rice had the consistency of toothpaste?.I?m done with this place. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Sushi more

Great HAPPY HOUR!! 3/24/2006

This place is a wonderful little sushi Happy Hour secret! A friend of mine went there for the happy hour, and only spent $30 total --- and we stuffed ourselves! The sushi is fantastic, and very fresh --- and the seaweed salad is addicting. Also they have $2 Sake special! Very nice and intimate atmosphere. I went at about 5pm, and it wasn't busy at all --- so I could actually hold a conversation with my friend. TRY THIS PLACE OUT!! :) Pros: Cheap Happy Hour, Good Service , Parking on street more

Great food. 10/24/2005

We loved it. My husband had various sushi; I had the ahi tuna. Both were excellent. Service is friendly but a little slow - I would have order another $9 glass of wine if only the waiter had come by after he served food/brought us a check. We will go back though; I'm still thinking about that ahi!! Pros: Excellent Food Cons: Parking more

disappointing service 10/10/2005

The greeting was great and we were served water and warm towels immediately after being seated, but the service ended there. We didn't see our server for at least 15 minutes, and even then were made to feel like we were annoying her. The food was fantastic, but we had to beg for drinks, to order and everything else. more
