Don't get it twisted 4/2/2011

1 Tomi sushi is gone. This location is under new ownership and has a new name so citysearch needs to update 2 if you think a California roll is traditional sushi, it's not, it was invented in San Perdro. 3 using the rice to soak up soy sauce is not a way to enjoy sushi I love Chitose because it is the closest thing to traditional sushi I have found. They respect their ingredients, perfectly prepared sushi rice, amazing fish such a o-toro, chutoro and uni. We go here one a month for omakase, letting the chef choose our course for tasty adventure. Plus they have organic sake more

Best Sushi in the Southbay 5/11/2010

Please note that this restaurant is under new ownership as of 2010. We went to this restaurant after numerous friends had reccommended it. We were amazed at how fresh the fish was. The owner and sushi chef goes to the fish docks every day to choose his fish. Chitose is much better than the higher priced Katsuya. Though it does lack a ""scene""...it is THE place to go for the best sushi. You will not be disappointed! Pros: very fresh fish more

WORST SERVICE EVER 2/22/2009

I felt very compelled to write this after eating there this past weekend. The service at Tomi Sushi was the worst service I have ever experienced. We arrived at 6pm for our dinner reservations for a party of 8 including a small child. The waitress escorted us to the back of the restaurant where there were two tables, one with 6 chairs. The waitress asked us to sit at the table with 6 chairs. Let me repeat...6 chairs for 8 people! We asked if we could use the table next to ours and she said no. After 5 minutes of utter confusion, we made the decision to sit outside of the private room. Our order was placed at approximately 6:10pm. Our food did not come out until 7:45PM. We saw many people who came in after us served before us. When our food arrived, everything was cold. I would understand if the restaurant seated over 100 people, however, this place seats at most 25 people and getting served an hour an a half after you place your order is completely unacceptable. Pros: Beer was good Cons: The service, cold food, unsanitary bathrooms more

Bad Service 2/29/2008

My wife and I decided to try Tomi Sushi last night again since we hadn't visisted since we first began dating a couple of years ago. The first time around the service was great as well as the quality of the food. I'm not sure if last night was an aberration or if it's the fact that we're not regular customers but WE'RE NEVER GOING BACK AGAIN. We got to Tomi Sushi and the sushi bar and a few tables were empty and this was around 7pm, so we figured we beat the dinner crowd. We were seated at a table and then the waitress took our order......the order consisted of edamame, miso soup, salmon, tuna, sweet shrimp, spider roll, and spicy tuna roll. We get our drinks, and noticed that a huge crowd of patrons entered, and the restaurant was packed at this point. The waitress came to our table with the edamame and the sushi chef comes runnng to our table and takes it to another table of patrons who came in well after us. It gets worse.....I see an order of sweet shrimp that I thought was headed to our table, instead it goes to patrons at the sushi bar who also came in after us. I'm starting to see a trend. We finally get the edamame and the miso soup. Next the waitress brings out tempura.....we didn't order tempura and the dish was actually meant for the table next to us. At this point we're both starving and the last straw is when the sushi chef comes out and brings us some rolls. I inspect the rolls and it doesn't look like the spider roll or the spicy tuna roll that we ordered. We've had enough and we tell the waitress to cancel the rest of the order and that we would pay for the drinks, edamame and miso soup. The waitress didn't even apologize and I was too hungry to inform the sushi chef or manager about our experience. Life is too short to waste on bad service. On the bright side, we found a sushi resaturant that we're now big fans of Hoka Hoka sushi! more

Top contender for best sushi in the South Bay 11/29/2007

First, I love the bad reviewer that still gave 4 stars...that's hilarious, but I'd like to point out that my dining experience was completely different from what she described. Pros: fresh fish, friendly sushi chefs, attentive service, accepts special requests Cons: none. seriously. more

Expect to pay a lot, and leave dissappointed, broke, and unsatisfied 8/28/2006

I was very dissappointed with my dinner tonight. My husband and I like to support our local restaurants, trying a different place everytime we go out. Needlesss to say, we tried Tomi Sushi. The food was acceptable at best, nothing fancy or especially remarkable. My spicy tuna handroll was saturated with mayonaise, disguising its taste. The ""live soft shell crab"" was pickled with something, again, masking the taste. It makes me wonder if they were masking the taste of the fish because it was not fresh? We ate conservatively, and ended up with an outlandish bill, which did not even categorize how they came up withthat ridiculous amount. We absolutely do not recommend this plalce to anyone. more

Best, and most under-rated, sushi in South Bay 9/23/2005

In a non-descript location next to a liquor store on PCH is a local treasure. I noticed about 10 sushi restaurants with better ratings on this site, but don't let them fool you. If you want your fish prepared by an astoundingly creative and talented master chef, grab a seat at their bar and ask them to make something special for you. All of the standard fare is good -- saki, sushi, sashimi, rolls -- but best of all are the traditional dishes prepared upon request. Pros: sushi, sashimi, sake more

friendly staff, good value, good sushi 4/22/2004

very helpful counter staff, good value. good tempura as well as the standard rolled fare more
