Although I like to support local businesses rather than large corporations, next time I will rent from Home Depot, because at Home Depot the customer is always right, especially when the customer is actually right...
I rented a towable auger this past Saturday at 2:30 p.m. to keep through Monday 7:30 a.m. I had four holes to dig, 44" - 48" each. The area was a bit rocky, but no large rocks, just three to five-inch wide, flat rocks at the largest. When I dropped off the machine, I told the guys in the back that it didn't work for me. Someone pointed out that it was missing a blade at the bottom of the auger, and he pointed to another one to show me where it should be. That one was missing a blade too. In the end, I got one hole dug complete (80% with a pole and hand post-hole digger, 20% with the auger). I got one hole dug 3/4 of the way (10% with the auger and the rest by hand). I got the other two holes dug 2-3 inches with the auger and determined it would be easier to dig by hand. I used the auger cummulatively 30 or so minutes. When I refilled the gas it took less than a half gallon. I also took an extension, which never came out of my truck. Why would I have needed an extension if the auger couldn't get more than 24 inches deep?
When I brought my paperwork inside I asked if there was anything that could be done, that I wasn't looking for a full refund, but just a break since the machine was useless to me, and also since it was rented out missing a blade on the auger. The answer was, "no."
