Best

I have been a frequenter of Sunset Grill for almost 2 decades, and although it has always been one of my favorites, 2009 and 2010 have been some of the most exciting years to go. ...

Worst

Average, at best. The service was average; the food was less than delicious. The fried calamari was nearly inedible. \r \r Great half-priced wine! \r \r As a side note, I ...

Randy got us corner table 10/12/2007

They were packed last nite, so Randy R was nice enough to cop us a corner table on the 20th avenue part of the patio seating. Anyway we had a truffle burger and a plate of venison. Both were good like the food always is here. Shared a bottle of cheap white Casa Lapostolle. more

Great for lunch! 5/19/2007

I was lucky to be taken out for lunch at Sunset Grill on multiple occassions over a four year stay in Nashville. The dishes were all fresh and innovative, reasonably priced, and promptly served. The dinner prices were a little steep and somehow not as fresh as at lunch. The desserts, however, were out of this world no matter what time of day! more

Good food, a bit over hyped 1/30/2007

Sunset is a quintessential Hillsboro establishment. good food and an extensive wine list as well as a good beer list, of note, they serve Chemay. Prices are quite high for what it is, but its more about the scene i think than fine dining. Pros: wine and beer selection Cons: over priced more

Great food 10/26/2006

Sunset is a great place for lunch or dinner. The food is reliable and the wine is resonably priced. I highly recommend this place. more

comfortable, capable and consistent 10/17/2006

no ego here. just good quality food and they'll serve it up anyway you ask them to. it's just always good. not strongly chef driven - but god bless randy rayburn the owner for keeping it high quality all the way... Pros: you can expect it to be very good and it will be Cons: it is what it is (like all of us) more

Rude waiter 10/9/2006

I visited with family on a sunday night. The waiter we had was quite rude. He was unhelpful and made snide remarks throughout the meal. I've always thought the food is rather inconsistent at Sunset Grill, but I definitely will not take anyone back there after poor treatment. more

Great place 8/24/2006

Enjoyed my visit here. Tjere was great service and a fabulous wine list. Loved the ambiance of the place... more

Consistently good 4/24/2006

Sunset Grill is consistently above average without being too expensive. It's not ""fine dining"" in the same league as F. Scotts or Midtown, but it's still very nice. The menu is longer than most of the ""fancier"" restaurant menus in Nashville, providing enough options for even a picky eater. There are lots of appetizers, soups, salads and sides for lesser appetites. The wine list is creative and extensive - fabulous for wine buffs! The outside patio is great for a drink, appetizer and dessert on a warm evening. Sunset used to be great on appetizers and desserts, not so good on entrees, but they've revamped their kitchen and menu recently and our recent entrees have been delightful! The service and seating time is hit-or-miss. All in all, I'd recommend it for a reliable, creative, semi-upscale meal. Pros: Outside Patio, Wine List, Extensive Menu Cons: Long Wait, Noisy more

User review by fancy77 4/23/2006

Sunset Grill is typically one of our favorite places for a nice evening. The menu is phenomenal. The chefs take pride in their dishes. Recently, however, we went for a Saturday evening anniversary dinner and were very disappointed with the service we recieved from Bill (our server). We were promptly seated, but felt incredibly neglected. He came by a few times and said ""I'll be right back"". After a half hour of waiting, we ordered a main course and wine only. He did not recommend any appetizers. It took another half hour of waiting with no visits for our food to arrive, sans wine. When reminded of the drink order, he questioned whether we had actually placed one, and finally brought it when our dinner was almost finished. His demeanor only improved when our check arrived. We felt like it was too late. Pros: food more

the best food in nashville!! 4/23/2006

Great soup, salads, desserts, vegetarian entrees, everything...Creative entrees that are always delicious. Pros: food, food, food Cons: parking more

Nice touch... 1/2/2006

A very nice experience and touch to our final evening in Nashville. The food was very good and was happy to arrive early for seating. Parking was better than average and finding the place to a non resisdence was a bit hard it may have been easier with a well lighted signage. Pros: Good Parking more

Thankful that I wasn't paying 11/18/2005

I received a gift certificate for Sunset Grill as a gift and decided to use it for my anniversary. I'm thankful that I wasn't paying for the meal. Our service was terrible. It took 10 minutes after being seated before our server even greeted us. Another 5 minutes before we got water. He never brought us bread as all the other tables around us, so we had to ask another server. All of the food, from appetizer to dessert was underwhelming. I will probably never dine here again. There are too many really incredible restaurants in Nashville to waste your time on this one. Pros: Wine List Cons: Service, Atmosphere, Food more

Thank God for Fed-Ex 10/1/2005

I dont think delivering delectable culinary delights to land-locked seafood aficionados was what Fred Smith had in mind when he founded Federal Express but thank goodness the powers behind Sunset Grill have the foresight to use this delivery method. Moki snapper, Alaskan salmon, Malpeque oysters all in one evening delivered right to our table, obviously fresh catches and perfectly prepared. The management is quite organized as the service was excellent on a busy Friday night, the wine by the glass selection in commendable and even the salads were extraordinary. This restaurant isnt just good for Nashville, its good period. Coming from a picky New Yorker, dont take that statement lightly. Go RSVP. Pros: Fresh Seafood, Great Choices, Wines!! Cons: Room Temperature more

Good Restaurant 7/13/2005

I think some of the reviews here are bogus. Sunset Grill is a good restaurant. I have eaten there 4 times and it has been consistent. Having moved to Nashville from Los Angeles, I have eaten at alot of really, really great restaurants. I think nashville is average with restaurants, there are not a lot of places that I would conisder excellent, but Sunset Grill is solid. They have one of the better wine lists I have seen here, and their menu is fairly creative. My service has always been above average, and love how the open air atrium keeps the room from getting smoky. Although Sunset grill wouldn't be a standout in Los Angeles or New York, in my experience it has been a consistent performer and serves some of the better food in fine dining here. more

why is this place still open? 7/5/2005

I will never understand why people flock to this restaurant as if it is serving the finest food in the city. Which by the way it is not, in fact the four times I have eaten here the food has been truly below average. I don't understand how people could possibly think that Sunset Grill is anything close to fine dining. But if you want to over spend for poorly prepared food in a dated setting by all means knock yourself out on this one. more

Impressive All Around 6/26/2005

Sunset once again managed to impress me. A true test of a restaurant is often if they can continue their outstanding performance over to a large group. We had a group of twenty and the evening was a resounding success. The planning was effortless and our guests left truly happy. The attention the staff paid to our wine pairings as well as accomodating our vegetarian guest was much appreciated. As I looked around the table empty plates were all around - grilled filet, tender, and juicy - smoked grilled pork chop, suculent, and flavorful - dover sole with crab and shrimp, perfectly prepared. The cocunut sushi put smiles on everyone's faces and once again there were empty plates of creme brulee and cheesecake too. Bravo for Sunset once again. Pros: Service, Wine List, Food more

Impotent 6/18/2005

That's the only word I can use to best describe hype and anticipation coupled with a horribly sub-par dining experience. First ordered the Pork w/ Polenta--guess what? No polenta left, and this was early in the evening. I ordered my second choice, the Angus Flank Steak strips w/ Gnocchi. The 'steak strips' were dry and crusty, the sauce was saccharin-sweet (still can't figure out the sugar element) and the Gnocchi was still in a raw dough-like consistency. I literally ate three bites. Here's the WORST: we decided to order the 'special' dessert: PB&J French toast w/ bananas foster. Get ready for this: we were served DRY toast w/ a smear of peanut butter, cut-up pieces of raw banana, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, all drizzled w/ caramel sauce. The sun has definitely set on my anger...but unfortunately, it took with it my desire to ever dine there again. Pros: trendy, nice patio, cute valet staff Cons: expensive, overrated, average food more

Nothing Special 10/8/2004

Nothing special here, first off the location is always very crowded, so valeting the car is a must. The atmosphere is nice, but nothing special. Its a nice place to take a date if you cant afford, or get reservations to a prime steakhouse (palm, mortons, flemings...). I've been there once for dinner and the service kind of lacked, and it took awhile to get our food. The second time i was there during the late-night menu. Service was better, but had to deal with a lot of college students not dressed for the restaurant, and who didnt know how to act in a fine dinning restaurant - thus wreaking the mood. I think there are a lot better restaurants in nashville, i dont see why so many people are so high on this place - i didnt see nothing special. Pros: wine list, price Cons: , deserts, service more

A none miss 9/10/2004

I just wanted to drop a line to let you know don't miss out on the Sunset Grill. If you are traveling and or from Nashville put this restuaraunt in YOUR Rotation. The professional service, the knowlegable wine service, and most of all, the wonderful culinary expertise shines like a dimond in the rough. I'm not sure if a waiter/bartender is still there. His name is Mike Bassow. He makes everything work like a well oiled machine. Rumor has it he is at the sister resturaunt, Midtown Cafe. What a catch for that staff. And speaking of GREAT resturaunts, Midtown Cafe is must stop too! Enjoy the experience...I know we will when we come back! Thanks again! more

Overpriced & inferior Houston's 11/12/2003

The waiter was rude, the food reminded me of an overpriced and inferior Houston's, and the price was outrageous. The atmosphere was nice but other than that I have no reason to ever eat at this restaurant again! more
