Editorial review from GrubHub 7/27/2013

I had the bacon cheeseburger with sweet potato fries and a side of green beans delivered around 9:45pm. I mention the time to give a possible explanation for why the food was cold when it arrived. However, it was definitely good quality even so, and service was quicker than expected. more

Best new menu in town 1/28/2010

I have been a frequenter of Sunset Grill for almost 2 decades, and although it has always been one of my favorites, 2009 and 2010 have been some of the most exciting years to go. After years of the same things on the menu, there has finally been a huge change after Chris Cunningham stepped in and took over back in October. Although your favorite classics, such as the voodoo pasta and the sunset caesar are still there for some people's liking, the rest of the menu has been totally revamped, bringing in an explosion of different cultures and tastes. It doesn't matter how picky anyone may be in your dinner party, there is something on the menu to perk up their tastebuds, such as the lamb kefta appetizer or the new trout ""BLT"". There is also always a full menu of fresh specials that change weekly based upon what's coming in locally. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is local or visiting. If you haven't visited in awhile, swing by and check out the new menu. It's definitely worth a visit! Pros: something for everyone on the menu Cons: leaving too full more

A Diamond in the Rough 1/19/2010

We always stop in Nashville on our way to IU in Bloomington. We were very fortunate to eat at The Sunset Grill last November. What a pleasant surprise!\r For a college town, it was very classy, yet ""cool"" and had very delicious food. The service was extremely competent and hospitable. We are from Atlanta, Ga and have many very good restaurants in our town. The Sunset Grill will definitely be a frequented place on our way to visit our kids at IU. Do not miss this ""diamond -in -the rough. Enjoy Pros: Great food, great people, great place Cons: Hard to find if you are an ""out-of-towner"" more

VERY mediocre 9/21/2009

As a Nashville native, as well as someone who loves to travel and eat great food wherever I go, trust me on this one: skip the Sunset Grill. This is a dinosaur of a restaurant. The menu has not changed in 10 years, and the wine list is unimpresive and equally dated. The food itself is average, at best - and certainly not worth the price paid. \r \r The Sunset Grill comes from a bygone era in Nashville dining, and can not compete with the many other, BETTER restaurants that are populating our fine city. The Sunset refuses to update their menu, and refuses to embrace culinary change of any sort. And perhaps more importantly, the food is uninspired, uninteresting, lackluster, and overall pretty terrible. It's kind of sad, but in the same vein, if they can't grow or move forward then they deserve the dwindling business they've been getting.\r \r Also to note, this place is popular with two types of Nashvillians: Vanderbilt sorority & frat types who think it's posh based solely on its location, and who really don't have any discriminating culinary tastes of their own, and the geriatric Belle Meade crowd. And that's it.\r \r Don't spend your time or money on this dying waste of good real estate. Pros: Location Cons: Dated menu, dated wine list, mediocre food more

Venerable Classic Still Kicking 7/20/2009

My boyfriend and I had dinner here last week with our parents. We had a great server - who knew the menu and offered great suggestions. We all ordered a starter plus an entree. Everyone was impressed by the starters - sonoma salad, summer salad of cucumbers and tomatoes, scallops. The main entree's were decent - lamb was tasty, pork tenderloin was yummy, vegetarian loved her stuffed pepper, etc. All in all, I would recommend Sunset to anyone. It's not some fancy new place in town, but rather a classic that's been here for a while and will more than likely stay around for a while. While the food might not be on the cutting edge, it's good portions and tasty. The patio is the place to be in great weather... Pros: Wine specials, patio, late night menu Cons: Patio Chairs more

What a deal! 6/29/2009

Two of us tried the Prime Grillin specials...what a deal! The steaks were cooked to perfection, and I would definitely recommend the shrimp scampi side. The wine sale is awsome--by the glass or bottle. We will definitely be back for more! Pros: Fantastic steaks at a steal Cons: No room for dessert more

what has happened to the Sunset Grill? 4/2/2009

I have dined at Sunset Grill many times during the last few years and have just recently watched the quality and quantity of the food and service deteriorate. The menu is uninteresting and the food is bland, as is the service. Fortunately, there are are many other other restaurants keeping their food and service up to standards during these difficult times. I will be patronizing them. Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Awesome Experience! 3/22/2009

My boyfriend and I recently dined at Sunset and had a really great time! We were greeted warmly at the door and had our choice of where we wanted to sit. It was a beautiful day so we sat in the atrium area where the windows were open. We were happily surprised to find a whole list of wines at a discounted price, some were even 50% off so we got an excellent Williamette pinot for under 50 bucks! Since the last time we had visited the menu had expanded and we could barely make up our minds! Everything was fantastic-- mussels, filet mignon and the duck. We finished with the apple crisp and nearly slipped into a food coma. Our server was knowledgeable but not pushy (I hate that) and we had a nice time talking with her. All in all, it was an awesome experience and we will definitely be going back! Pros: great wine list, yummy food, friendly staff Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

So OVERPRICED, you will leave hungry and having spent your life savings! Do Not WASTE YOUR MONEY!! 2/14/2009

My fiance' and I made reservations at Sunset Grille for Valentine's Day. We stood and waited at the entrance by hostess stand for nearly ten minutes before we were seated. We overlooked it and remained positive. I don't know where to begin...But, the menu is sort of limited. The salad selection is very poor and the entrees are very, very expensive. We were prepared to indulge in the amount of food, the wine and the price because of the occasion. So, we decided on a 29.50 bottle of wine that was ""50%"" off, when she brought it to the table realized it was ""Red Rosso from Sonoma"", it's a blend that I've bought several times at the store because it's $9.00. I had to tell her we made a mistake. So we picked another for about $30 and it was decent. My fiance' ordered the scallops entree at $25.00 and I ordered the salmon entree at $20.00. No appetizers. We just munched on the bread. We both drank water and wine. Our waitress was pleasant but lacked personality and enthusiasm you would expect from such fine dining. We got our meals and I was shocked. We didn't get a salad with them or any sides or anything so I expected decent portions. His plate had TWO, yes, TWO scallops on it with some green peas scattered around and a sauce. The sauce was lukewarm, as if it had been sitting out in room air. My fish was a normal size I suppose and over some risotto and a cream sauce. That's it. We spent, with the tip, $97.00 on two scallops and a piece of small salmon and a cheap bottle of red wine. No appetizer, no dessert, no sodas, no tea, no coffee. It was such a huge disappointment. It wasn't fine dining, it was poor service. Not only were we afraid of the portion of dessert we might get but we wondered if we could afford it! We were so ready to get out and wished we had just gone to Maggianos or something tasty and affordable that would fill us up! Do not go to this place, it is such an incredible RIP OFF!!! It's a joke. So sad we went here and spent $100 Pros: A large wine list, although don't be fooled, most are cheapo and marked up; location Cons: Food quality, food price, service, decor, PRICE more

90's Chic 1/19/2009

Average, at best. The service was average; the food was less than delicious. The fried calamari was nearly inedible. \r \r Great half-priced wine! \r \r As a side note, I also felt as if Frasier Crane might walk in at any moment... very 90s. \r \r more

fresh seafood & local products 7/4/2008

i was in for dinner last tuesday with my partner & a couple of friends. it had been awhile since we had last been in because we don't go out too often & when we have we've wanted to try some of the newer fine dining establishments that nashville has recently given us (like watermark & flyte-both fabulous by the way!)but we were drawn in by the 50% off wine sale. how can you go wrong with cheap wine?! as far as the decor not much has changed (except for some new paintings on the wall by dave turner? which were nice but looked a little out of place in contrast to the drab dining room). the food however has changed quite a bit since the last time we were in. they seem to be on the same bandwagon that alot of the other independent restaurants in town that we have been to are on-the whole local/sustainable thing that seems to be sweeping the nation. when we asked our server about a few of the items & where they came from he gave us very informative answers. we started with appetizers-fried homemade pickles (which sound hokey but were really good!), local smoked trout spring rolls & a red beet hummus which was a nice twist on your normal hummus. for an entree i had the special bluefish which i haven't had since i lived up north. i was pleasantly reminded of how good the seafood was when i lived in boston & surprised to be eating it in nashville of all places! my partner had a grouper special that was served with a duck fat fried potato & cabbage hash that was to die for. our friends ordered off the menu. one had a moroccan barbecued tennessee farm raised chicken dish which was light & full of flavor-especially for a chicken dish. the other had the scallops which he enjoyed but were a little bit overdone in my opinion. the desserts hadn't changed much since we were in last but we did have a fresh local berry cobbler with creme fraiche ice cream that was quite yummy. we'll definitely be back sooner next time-especially if we can eat good food with cheap high end wines! Pros: fresh seafood, local food more

great menu 7/3/2008

great menu good service and half price wine by the bottle a great deal, one of Nashvilles classic's alway's getting better Pros: half price wine, food Cons: parking more

Filthy Coaches!!! 7/2/2008

Disclaimer: Citysearch won't let me say what I want so instead of the word I need to use we will use another, it is the word that rhymes with ""coaches""\r Oh how disappointed I am! This used to be my favorite restaurant but alas it is no more. I used to long for their chocolate sushi and the dimly lit ambiance that is Sunset but my last visit has stopped me in my tracks forever from going back. I was eating with a friend in the bar and suddenly my friends face froze and the waitress was called over. I never looked but when the waitress pulled a napkin out of her apron and started beating the back side of my booth I knew it was bad. My friend told me then that it had been a ""coach"". I could not believe that this happened at my FAVORITE restaurant. It was terrible. At the time I was just so grossed out at the situation that I couldn't really think but we actually paid for the meal - which is totally not okay. Anyway, ""coaches"" only live around filth and where there is one there are a thousand. Seriously, I know that it is hard to keep a restaurant clean, I have worked in a few myself, but ""coaches"" are where you just have to draw the line. Eat at your own risk. Pros: Pretty on the outside Cons: Ugly on the ""inside"" more

Great food, wine and vibe 6/4/2008

I hadn't been to Sunset Grill in quite a while, but a friend suggested and I am so glad he did. We made an 8pm reservation and while they were busy we were seated promptly. The server (I wish I got his name) was friendly and knowledgeable. He suggested a wine that I fell in love with. I ordered a salmon dish, a special and it was delicious!! I wish it was on the main menu! The atmosphere was pleasant. Totally Great vibe. If you haven't been in a while check it out! Great dining experience! more

Missed the Mark 4/9/2008

I've been to some great 4 star restaurants around the country and this one missed the mark. We had a reservation for 7:30 however we still had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. The main dining area is cramped, you are right on top of the table next to you. The server was friendly but slow. Food was just okay, not impressive at all. I ordered Pork Ossobucco with a jalapeno barbecue sauce and it was bland. Not worth the money at all. Try Cabana across the street if you want good food at a decent price. Same owners but much better atmosphere. Also try Radius10 for a delicious high end meal. Pros: Free Valet Parking, Friendly services Cons: Bland food, cramped atmosphere more

Misinformation on Menu.....not great food!!! 3/9/2008

Had out of town company, reservations for 9pm. Arrived promptly, seated promptly. Special menu listed Stone Crab Claws (5 claws for $30) menu also listed next to the claws - ""with Joes famous mustard dipping sauce"". We are HUGE admirers of Joes in South Beach and are familiar with their sauce and asked the waiter if it is indeed ""Joes"". We were assured that it was the Real Deal!!! How disappointing when it arrived and was tasted like a poor rendition of the original. We pointed this out to the waiter who later apologized to us and said it was not authentic Joe's Mustard Sauce. Additionally, the crab claws, while a decent size, were not of the quality I would expect for the price. We have no problem spending top dollar for good food, but paying top dollar for substandard really irks us. Two Good Points - The restaurant did tell us that dessert would be on them due to the misinformation. Also weekend nights, bottles of wine are half price. Back to the food. In addition to the crab, we ordered calamari as an appetizer. At $12 - it was terrible, tasted like frozen calamari that was breaded and the breading undercooked. Had a raw flour taste to it. Red/green peppers were also mixed in and were the best part of the dish. The cocktail sauce is lackluster. An entree of Lobster ravioli was ordered by one of our dining party and while the concept was ok, the dish was way too busy and overpowered by blue cheese and apples in the dish. The scallops were ok as was the tenderloin. The port ossobucco was decent. Additionally, they advertise a free powerball ticket to be given with every bottle of wine ordered. We never saw a lottery ticket. Dessert, which was on the house was fine, the creme brulee was good, the flavor was great the sugar top was fair (too thin, only covered half of the dish). Presentation was good for most things. But overall, very disappointed. Felt very rushed as courses were brought out before the prior ones were finished. Pros: 1/2 price bottles of wine on weekends Cons: Food, rushed service more

Highly overrated and overpriced. 2/29/2008

Some friends and I went to Sunset Grill a few nights ago hoping for some good food and a nice atmosphere. We were very dissapointed. The food was mostly inedible. I got a burger and could not eat it. It was cold and tough, I couldn't even cut it with my knife. The bite I did have tasted awful, so I just gave up. Others in the party had pasta (also cold) and chicken as well as salads. No one enjoyed their food. The service was horrible. The waitress got our orders wrong, brought some people food then 10 to 15 minutes later brought the others food. After that she never came back to see how we were doing. When she brought the check she didn't bother to ask why no one had eaten their food and didn't stick around long enough for us to tell her we weren't happy. We will never be back there. It cost me over $20 and the only thing I could consume was my glass of water. And, for a $20 glass of water one would at least think you could expect to get a refill. more

Inventive Food and Service 1/4/2008

Our group of 13 ranged in age from 12 - 50+; all were pleased; service was excellent; our server was very knowledgeable and helpful through the extensive wine offerings; all were paired nicely. \r \r On 12/30/07 The shuttle picked us promptly from the hotel and upon arriving our table was quickly prepared and readied for our 8:00 reservation. Tableside service was prompt, courteous and helpful.\r \r Greatly recommend to those that want something different. Our children enjoyed the vegetable stir fry; I had the lemon sole special of the evening and it was wonderful.\r \r \r \r Pros: Service, varied menu, food! Cons: the location is 250 miles from home! more

very disappointing 12/18/2007

My significant other had been to SG previously, so we decided to venture out for a special evening. Boy this was a huge let-down! The appetizer had spoiled tomatoes on it?meaning they were sour and black! My husband found a long black curly hair in his entree', and the wait staff couldn't care less. My side item was cold and hard as rock. After bringing the problem to the attention to the wait staff they made no attempts to correct the problem or even fix it other than to take the dish away. Way to expensive for this kind of service and food more

Interesting ingredients = Great dinner! 10/15/2007

I recently enjoyed dinner at Sunset Grill. The dinner menu was extensive and each item offered many unique flavors and ingredients. I was very happy with the recommended wines for each item. I will definitely return to this restaurant! Pros: Many menu choices, Extensive wine list, Great service Cons: Loud, crowded more
