Sumo Japanese Restaurant

I first tried this place 6 years ago and decided that I had made a mistake and would not be wasting my time when there were so many other places to go for Japanese. However, after reading scores of positive reviews I decided to give the place another shot thinking maybe ownership had changed and things had improved. I was sadly mistaken. I ordered the Katsu Donburi. A standard of Japanese restaurants all over. The waitress didn't know what it was even though it is on the menu. I pointed at it on the menu and she still wasn't sure of my order. Fine, whatever, I fully expected to get the wrong dish. When she did bring out my food, it was the correct dish but I thought there still had to be a mistake. It was the size of a side order of rice at any other Japanese restaurant. There was almost no pork, no egg, and no onion on it. Considering Katsu Donburi is pork, egg, and onion on rice, this is completely unacceptable. After I finally found the all of 3oz of pork, one egg (maybe) worth of egg, and couple of slivers of onion under the mound of seaweed flakes, I decided to see how it tasted. It tasted like nothing. It tasted like the soy sauce I poured over it and not much else. I did notice a textural oddity and realized that they had put white button mushrooms in the dish. It's not a standard ingredient in the dish and there's no need for cheap, tasteless filler in a RICE dish. The worst part of the entire thing was getting the check and finding out this pathetic, tasteless, side dish they had the gall to call an entree was $15. Anywhere else this dish costs, at most, $10. Everything is great, they will always give you extra food and drinks too. Nothing is over priced and the salmon is the best I have ever had in my life. The sushi chef's are a blast and they love to have a good time with customers. Pros: Food Service and a good time Cons: Busy some nights more

I read some good reviews about this place, and decided to try it. I ended up quite dissapoined because the sushi chief was quite irritated when I asked him some questions about the food he was making. I guess he had a lot of experience in the sushi buisiness but the rolls he made were very average and often were falling apart before you placed them in your mouth. Again very average restaurant, and I didnt like the atmosphere there. more

I have been going to sumo for about 9 years now they are the BEST. evertime I go to another place it just makes them look so much better. Freshest sushi I have ever eaten comes from here I even have family in Hawaii and everytime they come to visit they want to go here. atmosphere is incredible, so lively, chefs are incredibly friendly. waitress are always on the prowl to see if you need anything this place stand alone at the top they have really created something special. Jay, Johnny, Sonny, Clair, and the rest of the crew at Sumo offer superb customer service. The fish is of the highest quality. I own The Personal Chef Service a catering company here in town and being a chef myself, I am very critical of food service establishments, also growing up in Hawaii I demand quality seafood. I have been patronizing Sumo sushi for about two years now and I have not had one bad experience there. This is the place I bring my friends and family when they visit Las Vegas. My wife and I have converted many non sushi eaters in to lovers at this place! Sumo is one of few sushi establishments in town that offer fresh Wasabi (if you have not had it stay away it's addicting) I highly recommend Sumo to anyone who can appreciate high quality food and excellent customer service. I love sushi and go with my friends all the time. The service is great, chefs are fun and entertaining, they always remember your name and what you order!!! The sushi is always fresh and they have soooo many amazing dishes that you can't find anywhere else. Try the Jay Rice and Tuna Kai (i can't spell). They always give you more sushi than other places and it's a reasonable price! I have brought everyone I know here and they all love it too. We've given up eating sushi anywhere else! more

The sushi and service is EXCELLENT. I have been coming to Sumo's since 1997 and the fish is always fresh. The chefs are very entertaining and will add extra sushi to your order. I eat sushi about 3 times a week and this is my #1 place to visit once a week. Pros: Extra sushi to your order, Very fast service and super fresh sushi. Cons: needs to be open 24/7 more

I LOVE this restaurant! The chefs are knowledgeable... everyone is super nice! I'm here for a long weekend visiting a friend and have been here twice in three days so far and will stop by for one more dinner before my trip is done. The chefs remembers EVERYONES name. Sit at the bar - the chefs will recommend their fresh fish and rolls. So far I've had fantastic uni, the best toro and yellowtail that I have EVER had... all of which was recommended by our sushi chef. And I have yet to have a bad item here. Happy eating! While visiting my folks on vacation, we stumbled on this gem. They offer all the standard offerings with a nice (actually, overwhelming!) selection of unique fare. Fresh and fantastic, we were incredibly pleased with every choice we made. We even tried some of their tempura and miso soup and were just as pleased. If you're in the Vegas area and get a craving for Japanese/Sushi, definetly go to this place - it is well worth it! Pros: Great selection, Good atmosphere more

If you enjoy sushi, you would love Sumo. My friends and I have been going to Sumo for over 5 years now and its sushi is always fresh and execellent. Often party-like atmosphere with happy chefs and many returning customers. Owner has its house-made light soy sauce and many signature rolls come with sumo special sauce. Yum yum... I have visited many sushi bars in LV over the past few years, but Sumo remains the best on my list. Always fresh, great service and many unique rolls and other sushi dishes. Downside is that they list special rolls, etc. on the menu board, but no explaination - you have to go through them all. Pros: Fresh Sushi, Great Service, Unique Offerings more

Don't go here for traditional sushi - this Korean owned sushi restaurant has an aray of different kinds of sushi's in hundreds of different flavours. Pros: great value, superb flavours, big selection more
