Never go back again 8/17/2010

We have not done the San Vicente joint but we have tried the one in the Marina. This place is a stone rip off. The room is cool and the help is OK. The fish has been precut some place else and they then have a untrained Sushi guy putting it together in the back. It was OK but nothing special and thought it was over priced as there are any number of Sushi places on the West Side that are better and often less expensive. But mostly I objected to the fact that they added I think an 18% tip on the total bill including the tax. We were only two people. In all my years as a Restaurant worker, owner and patron I have never seen a tip added on for such a small party. Besides I never tip on the tax But then I am jaded as we use to have Masa take care of us at Ginza Sushiko. Also the guys at the Hump. I know if I can't say anything nice I shouldn't say anything at all but I just could not help myself, Frank Soracco more

Delicious Sushi! 6/1/2010

I absolutely loved this sushi place! I heard a lot of good things about this japanese restaurant and I decided to finally check it out tonight and I must say I was not disappointed at all. I ordered the Nozawa special on their menu and every single sushi was fresh, delicious and melted in my mouth. The price was quite reasonable for the amount of pieces they served me. The staff was very professional and super friendly. The only negative thing I would say is that it was crowded and a bit loud but my friend who has been there several times said that usually it is not that busy, Pros: Resonable prices for top quality sushi, great service Cons: Crowded more

Sushi Heaven 1/27/2010

I have been trying to find the "best" sushi on the west side, and I have to look no further. I followed everyone's advice and ordered the Trust Me Light- and have never had fresher fish. But make sure to get the crab hand roll- to die for. The fish is served on warm, sweet sticky rice and the fish melts in your mouth. Parking is validated for first 2 hours and service was spot on. All in all, a wonderful dinner. Pros: Crab roll, Trust Me dish, service Cons: Slightly small portion but left satisfied more

Overrated at best 1/8/2010

After reading so many rave reviews my wife and I ventured a trip with my parents who were in town visiting. Overall - service was decent though they stopped explaining what we were being served after the first course of the Nozawa version of the "Trust" concept. Speaking of the "Trust" concept - it seems to be a commercialized version of the original intent of the 'omakase' tradition of putting yourself in the chef's hands. Instead of a custom designed menu from a sushi master built to order it has been reduced to a set menu with little change from day to day or even week to week. While I did enjoy the unique combination of ponzu sauce with sushi that stylized many of our nori - over time it got a little old and did not effectively mask the sub-standard quality of the fish served. Additionally, my parents and wife noticed a fishy smell upon entering the restaurant. Overall, I would rather go to nearby Sakura on Centinela which provides much higher quality product and larger selection though is slightly more expensive. However, if you are not big on raw fish and prefer sushi styles that are more about the sauce and the rice than what's served on top of it then sugarFISH is probably a better choice. Pros: Ponzu sauce + sushi = unique! Cons: Sub-standard quality food with average service more

Another fantastic place 10/25/2009

I've been enjoying sushi from Sushi Nozawa for years. sugarFISH is a fantastic concept and continues to improve. It's fantastic sushi in a great environment (love the San Vicente location) without the long waits of places with similar quality. I absolutely love it. Nice job on the new look and thanks for adding the hand rolls. Pros: perfect balance of simplicity and quality more

We go every time we get to LA 10/19/2009

This is my children and my favorite Sushi restaurant. They talk about it all the time. Very nice staff and decor. We have always had a great experience here. Love it! Pros: Incredibly great sushi Cons: I have to fly to LA for it more

Best sushi experience in town, bar none 10/12/2009

After going to Sushi Nozawa in the Valley for years, I got hooked on SugarFish in Marina Del Rey when they opened there -- and was psyched to find them opening a new branch even closer to me in Brentwood. This place is basically the same as the Marina Del Rey branch, with the added benefit of a warmer, cozier ambience. The sushi is fresh and delicious, with perfect sauces and excellent prices -- like the Marina Del Rey branch, it makes every other sushi place in town seem both overpriced and tired. Pros: Delicious sushi at reasonable prices with great ambience Cons: I hate going anywhere else for sushi now... more

Get your Sushi Fix here 9/19/2009

In the tradition of Sushi Nozwa, SugarFish delivers mouth-watering fresh cold fish over warm tender rice. Sushi lovers will savor the flavor as it seems to melt in your mouth. If you like Nozawa, Sasabune, Echigo, you will love SugarFish! The Brentwood location offers a more upscale atmosphere than the Marina location - a great place to relax, have a drink, and get some of the best sushi on the westside. Ordering the "Trust Me" is like having your own personal sushi chef deliver their favorites to you... painstakingly handcrafted, serving after serving. The quality and taste of the fish is amazing. Clearly the staff know when the flavor is at its peak. All sushi rice is not equal - SugarFish has obviously taken the time to perfect its recipe - compare it to other sushi places, and you will taste the difference! Having the pieces delivered one-at-a-time draws out the experience and ensures that the sushi is eaten at the exact right time where the warm rice balances the cold fish - don't wait - eat it as soon as it arrives!!! SugarFish is like sushi art - and chances are you will want to keep coming back to appreciate it! Pros: Top quality fish, prepared in Nozawa style more

Great Sushi in Brentwood! 9/17/2009

I had been to the Marina location and was already a fan of the fish but the Brentwood location improves on even that.. The fish is still super fresh and the rice is warm but add to that a really comfortable room with great atmosphere and this ends up being a great place for lunch or dinner... The crab handroll is a perfect dessert. Any of the Trust Me's are great... The only down side is that you will want to keep eating because everything tastes so incredible. Pros: Delicious sushi that won't break the bank Cons: none more

TRUST THEM! Amazing sushi at really reasonable prices 9/17/2009

I have been to the new Brentwood SugarFish over a dozen times since they opened in July and LOVE IT. The concept is fantastic and the execution is delicious. Each time I have gone the waitstaff always starts by asking if I am familiar with the menu.. basically there are 3 types of omakase... A Trust Me LIte, Trust Me and then the Nozawa special. I usually go Trust Me Lite with a few a la carte adds. (The Nozawa is a LOT of food but the fish is so good I have always cleaned my plate.) What differentiates this sushi is that they take a page from NOZAWA in the Valley and serve incredibly fresh fish on warm rice. The result is sublime. The hand rolls are delivered with toasted nori and the waiters always advise you to eat soon because the crisp nori is part of the overall appeal. The Trust Me menus are great and feature the delicious basics including the tastiest Salmon I have had in town, extra tender albacore and perfect halibut.. But my favs also include items from the a la carte options: the UNI from Catalina has always been so fresh and flavorful, the snapper is perfectly dressed and the Scallop Hand roll is a revelation. The rave could continue about everything on the menu.. I have tried almost everything there is and never been disappointed. A few other notes on the restaurant... The atmosphere is great and varied.. Early dinner tends to be family friendly while after 730p turns to a very hip vibe. They serve from lunch thru dinner so it is a great place that stays open for late lunches.. and the parking could not be more convenient... validated free parking in the lot that is directly in front. I could not rave more and wish I could eat every meal here ... Pros: Melts in your mouth fish, Super fresh uni, Easy parking more

Hands Down Best Sushi In Town 9/16/2009

In a word....SPECTACULAR!!! The whole experience of dining at SugarFish is great. The food is exceptional. I eat here at least once a week and have never been disappointed. The staff is very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. I love the atmosphere. It has a really cool vibe. Since they opened I haven't gone to another restaurant for sushi other than the original in the marina. Pros: Really Fresh Fish Cons: Not A Negative Thing to Say more

Finally, amazing sushi in Brentwood! 9/15/2009

Dine on the best sushi in LA in earthy chic decor. Brentwood has been in need of simple, pure sushi at resonable prices. Look no further. This is your place! Order the Trust Me for the best fish of the day. Don't miss the baby tuna sashimi, the albacore sushi, the red snapper or the halibut. All melt in your mouth unique. Pros: Amazing fish, moderate prices, personable service. Cons: None more

Must try experience 9/15/2009

Its hard to imagine but SugarFish has out done themselves with their second restaurant. This is a must try. Pros: great experience more

Tender as the Night 9/14/2009

If you love sushi - I mean, really love sushi - then you will love Sugarfish. Once you eat your sushi here, you will not want to go anywhere else - Trust Me! The sushi is tender-as-the-night, and the rice is warm, soft and delicious (almost as good as the fish!).... They consistently serve the finest cuts of sushi I have ever had (in any State)... The Brentwood location is easy in-and-out with plenty of free parking. The Staff makes you feel right at home. The prices are not expensive. Pros: sushi quality, flavor, staff, location Cons: nothing hot - no miso soup more

Fantastic sushi, cozy and cool vibe 7/7/2009

This is a fantastic spin off of Sushi Nozawa in the Valley. Same amazing sushi (get the "Trust Me"), but very different atmosphere - classy, wood decor, low lights. I also appreciated the attention to being "green." Easy parking. Fabulous sake. A great new place in Brentwood, sure to be busy. Pros: Incredible food, great service, relaxed and sophisticated more

Excellent sushi, fair price 6/28/2009

Best sushi we're had in a long time. The fish was incredible, the filtered re-bottled water idea is inspiring, the atmosphere and service was flawless. Next to Nozawa itself, this might be the best sushi in town. Pros: Amazing fish more

  • SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa is a different kind of sushi dining experience. Our restaurants offer traditional sushi of the highest quality in a casual setting with no pretense. Our passion is to make authentic food accessible to everyone. SUGARFISH embodies the philosophy of celebrated sushi chef Kazunori Nozawa, well known for his Trust Me-style sushi in Studio City.
At SUGARFISH located in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, we want to change the way you think about sushi by taking the best of age-old Japanese craftsmanship and placing it in a wholly new setting. In the Japanese tradition, sushi is a celebration of two things: the quality of its exceptional ingredients and the skill of its chefs in selecting, cutting, and presenting them. Join us for dinner today.

Editorial
  • Expanding on its other strip mall success in Marina Del Rey, this cool and casual Japanese eatery proves that great sushi can be an everyday luxury. While the notorious "Sushi Nazi" Kazunori Nozawa is not actually in the kitchen (he's at his original outpost in Studio City), he still oversees the menu and picks every piece of fish that's served. Knowing this, most patrons will choose from the handful of "Trust Me" omakase options, which offer the freshest catches of the day at the best value--about half the cost of what you'd pay at the original Valley location. Of course, there are a la carte options as well. You know, for those who still have trust issues.
