Mr. Sexton removed the engine from an asphalt compactor/roller and brought it in to be rebuilt. The motor was rebuilt an returned. Mr. Sexton installed the engine on the machine. He brought back the entire machine with the motor attached and stated it was making a knocking noise. After searching, it was discovered the noise was coming from the starter. It was also discovered that the governor was loose and the throttle cable was installed and adjusted improperly. The engine was also running too fast at higher throttle. Still concerned about any engine problem though there was not any evidence of a knocking noise, we removed the engine and inspected the crankshaft and connecting rod. Everything was perfect. We reassembled the engine, mounted it on the machine. We adjusted the carburetor, adjusted the governor and corrected the engine speed. It purred like a kitten and sounded great. Mr. Sexton then brought the machine back a 2nd time about 3 weeks later. The engine was blown up. There was fuel in the crankcase. We removed the engine and tore it apart to inspect the failure. The connecting rod was completely shattered as well as the piston skirt torn off. This was from a catastrophic failure which occurs when the engine is run in an overspeed condition. Any failure caused by something we did or didn't do would be corrected by us at no cost. We are not responsible for customer misuse or abuse of an engine. It was explained to Mr. Sexton why the engine failed and he did not argue or complain. I am sure he knows why the engine failed but won't admit it. The evidence was in the engine when we inspected it and it told the whole story.
