For my entire life, I've had my hair done by the same salon in New York. It was a Korean place, and the owner was a friend of my mom's. I love perming my straight hair, but with my salon in New York, that service was something to be desired. The curls were uneven, and my hair came out dry and crispy looking. No matter how many pictures I showed them, the results (1) looked nothing like the picture, but (2) always looked the same as all the previous perms. As I am in New Orleans for most of the year, I decided to look for a salon here. I remembered Steven Sobel from an InStyle magazine that featured them as the best salon in New Orleans to get a color treatment. I made an appointment with Ivonne, who has naturally curly hair herself. For a person usually left with a magazine while my stylist went to take care of another person, the one-on-one session was luxurious, if not a little disconcerting. I told her about my previous experiences, and for the first time, I was an active player in choosing the size of the rollers, where the curls began, and how it was done. From 2 until closing, I was the only customer, and I felt very taken care of. I asked for it to be more curly than not, and when it was done, it was a little too curly. She said it would loosen out and surely enough it did. I got so many compliments, by people who never complimented me when I had my previous perms- that says something, doesn't it?
Pros: Loved the results
Cons: Had to pay for some hair products put in after perm- though I was never asked, nor notified of extra price
