State Cinema isn’t sure what it wants to be.
For the last few decades it has mainly been a second-run theater. Then it tried to capture the first-run market but that didn’t seem to work out for them.
Now they have opened a second screen for art movies while maintaining their second-run business.
With all the large chains buying up small theaters, there is something comforting about going to a theater where the ticket taker also sells the popcorn. I used to go to the State Cinema when I was a kid. Now I take my kids. This may not be the most up-to-date or cleanest theater but I appreciate its continuity and connection to the neighborhood.
