Known the world over for both its academic (undergraduate and graduate) and research programs, it also boasts one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation (and possibly the world). Founded in memory of their son, Leland, who died of typhoid fever at the tender age of 14, the university began with the purpose of offering a quality education to any who merited it. Due to rigorous academic standards of admission, a top-level sports program, and numerous community-service and outreach programs, Stanford is one of the most influential residents of the peninsula.
