Great wine selection 6/7/2010

I started with Diver Scallops, which were very fresh and paired well with an avocado-yuzu puree. I was disappointed that instead of purple sticky rice, jasmine rice was used. My friend had the escargot, which was completely overwhelmed by the goat cheese. Then I had the Alaskan Halibut, which was okay but nothing special, the mussels and kale that accompanied it were quite tasty however. My friend's filet mignon was cooked rare and very fresh. The waitress suggested a Vouvray to complement my dinner, and the wine was also alright but short of spectacular. For dessert, I had the lemon cheesecake and key lime pie in berry coulis. Tasty but the two desserts were a bit too similar that they almost tasted identical. Overall, a bit disappointing. For fine dining in Evanston, Quince is a better choice. Pros: Interesting dishes Cons: Not so well executed more

THE WORST SERVICE, IF U CAN EVEN CALL IT THAT 4/15/2008

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO A DOG!!!! THE GENERAL MANAGER WAS RUDE AND OUR WAITRESS CAME TO THE TABLE A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES!! IT TOOK OVER 20 MINUTES TO GET A GLASS OF WINE. IT TOOK HER OVER 40 MINUTES TO TAKE OUR DINNER ORDER. SHE NEVER CAME TO ASK HOW EVERYTHING WAS, NEVER APOLOGIZED FOR HAVING US WAIT FOREVER FOR OUR DRINK ORDERS. THE BAR WAS A TOTAL OF 10 FEET AWAY FROM OUR TABLE AND SHE STILL COULDNT GET OUR SECOND ROUND OF DRINKS IN UNDER 20 MINUTES. WE WERE SO DISGUSTED WITH THE SERVICE THAT IT RUINED ANY CHANCE OF ENJOYING THE MEAL. I WOULD NEVER RETURN, AND I WILL MAKE SURE THAT I TELL PEOPLE NOT TO GO THERE SINCE THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT TAKES TO ACTUALLY SERVE A CUSTOMER. Cons: SERVICE more

good wine and food..but noisy 3/24/2008

My husband and I went to Stained Glass for what we hoped would be a romantic dinner for two. While the wine selection, service and food were very good, the proximity of other diners and the noise level due to the hardwood floors and high wood ceilings made this a meal we wanted over quickly. The tables were so close, we could hear every word the people at the next table were saying. And, it became loud and noisy quickly. The ""flights of wine""~ 3 half glasses of similar types of wines ~ was an interesting and nice way to try several kinds of wine. And the appetizers for two, were tasty although a bit too rich. While the wine and service are big pluses, they aren't big enough to overcome the noise and lack of ambiance. Pros: the service and the wine Cons: the noise, proximity of other tables and the lack of ambiance. more

Slow service, undercooked meat, rude chef 8/26/2007

The service was very slow, the lamb was not cooked properly, the fish was not fresh. The wine was good but was not available when asked for another bottle. What a dissapointment!!! more

Avoid it, bad service and food 8/24/2007

Stained Glass Cafe in Evanston, IL used to be a nice place with good food and reasonable service, and even though it was overpriced we liked this place and from time to time got together with our friends there.\r Today we had a negative experience. Food was not cooked as it was asked, fish (halibut) was so smelly that it was not eatable. When this fish was returned to the kitchen the manager did not show up until 30 min late.\r He said that he is an owner and a chef. He insisted that the fish was good, never offered to substitute the meal. Finally, one person from our company was left without a dinner. The whole incident left a bad taste.\r Evidently, even good restaurants can change for worse. Now I would recommend no one to have dinner in Stained Glass Cafe.\r Simon\r Pros: Good location Cons: Not good food, overpriced more

What a chef! 8/31/2005

The food was terrific and the service was excellent. A perfect, romantic ambience rounded out a very satsifying dining experience. We can't wait to go back. more

Stained Glass 6/27/2004

Perhaps we were there on an off night. Despite having reservations we were told that our table would not be ready for 15 minutes and it was much longer. The waitress was covering too many tables and thus the service was atrocious. We saw our watress twice only. The dessert menu was practically thown on our table. They mixed one of our orders and my entree had not been cooked (chicken was vey pink). I would not go back nor would I recommend. For the price of the meal I would expect good service at minimal and good food at minimal. There was nothing unique about this restaurant. Cons: , poor service, food undercooked more

Amazing 9/15/2003

Great menu -- incredible wine list. Food was sublime -- every plate we had was delicious. The menu is varied and the right balance of ambition and comfort. From the free-range chicken in mustard/rosemary jus to the beef tornados with the best pomme frites I've ever had, every dish was wonderful. Service was a bit rushed, but knowledgable and friendly. Really a restaurant not a bar. Pros: great food, excellent wine list, atmosphere more
