The Best Club In St. Louis! 3/23/2012

This is a message from the managing partner of the gym. I've read a lot of reviews on line about former members making negative comments about our club. The fact of the matter is that we have been in business for over 13 years in the Central West End and have had more than 25,000 members use our clubs over the past 13 years. As most people are aware, it is imposible to satisfy every customer that comes through our door, but I would say that we have done so 99.9% of the time. Typically people only take the time to write a review if they are displeased with service and many times it is carelessly exaggerated. It's unfortunate, but it's true. We also carry a rating of B+ with the BBB and that is pretty amazing given the amount of members we have serviced over the years. \r Our 8,000 square foot facility has a great location next to Forest Park and a unique neighborhood gym atmosphere. We have all of the ameneties of any big box gym without the crowds. Our ameneties include over 50 pieces of cardio, a wide variety of free weights and selectorized machines, nationally certified/degreed personal trainers, locker rooms with showers, a mix of over 25 group fitness classes per week including spinning, yoga, pilates, kickboxing, zumba and butts and gutts, and an outdoor pool and whirlpool. All this is included for $10 to $30 per month.\r We offer a clean facility, a freindly staff, and an overall great atmoshphere. Come down and see for yourself. We look forward to servicing all of your fitness needs. Sincerely, Kevin more

Same Owners...They take advantage of you !!! 9/15/2011

The Facts: While working the evening shift a woman of Eastern descent (possibly India/Pakistan) walked into my office and said she wanted to speak to me about the cancellation policies of St. Louis Workout. I greeted her warmly offered her a chair and closed the door slightly halfway to reduced noise levels and give her my full attention. The young lady announced that she was a recent graduate of Washington University and would be leaving the area very soon. Knowing this she canceled her membership with St. Louis Workout the year before (the Union Avenue location, near the Washington University campus). The woman was in her early 20s, carried herself with poise, dignity and nobility, and she had large expressive eyes, which soon began to tear up as she described the situation, (but she did not cry, for she was so insulted). She explained how she had just noticed that for over a year after the cancellation of her membership contract and while she was finishing up her studies at Washington University, St. Louis Workout was going about the business of deducting funds from her account. The young lady was so well poised that she took measured control of the indignation she felt. She managed to suppress the unworthy and unjust treatment handed to her by Kevin Harman (senior vice president of operations at St. Louis Workout), his mother Mrs. Harman (behind the scenes operations, formerly the smoothie lady) and other staff members who were screening her calls. This young lady and recent graduate of Washington University was so well mannered that she would not allow herself to express her anger with me a new staff member. She was stern and direct while asking key operational question but respectful of my presence, she knew that I had no knowledge of the St. Louis Workout situation (I had been working there two weeks, this young lady was aware that I was relatively new). I took a closer look at the contracts, and I noticed that they were in transition The terminology and the legalese were changing slightly but significantly the location of the cancellation policy was relocated in the newly offered contract so that the cancellation policy was easier to see. I suspect so that it does not appear to be as hidden as it was in the previous contract and address any issues with respect to suing the company on legal grounds of presentation. Even so, it is not the written word and the terminology that was the problem with the contracts. It was the unspoken manner in which they are enforced. At the drop of a hat, ABC collection agency will become involved in your life in some cases ruining the lives of men and women who are just getting started with major financial responsibilities, romantic obligations, marriage, the purchase of transportation and a home. As an employee I had access to files that were in the process of being removed from the server, but they moved too slowly... they were fully aware of the cancellations that were filed by people who walked into the Union Ave. or the Crestwood location. It was (and is) a business practice to intentionally charge the client's of St. Louis Workout sometimes for years after the cancellation. After that I cut my hours short and let someone else come in my position, I took my last check, and then announced that I would not be returning. They are the scum of the Earth, truly, I felt dirty just being around them, the mother, and their underhanded policies ... more

Great Gym 1/16/2011

I don't write many reviews..but when I see negative ones on a place I REALLY like I have to counter!! I have worked out for many years at many gyms (showing my age) and this gym is great for everyone/any age. Fantastic energy, good weights. Yes It is in an old building..but that is the great feel & beauty of it...CWE has all old buildings! ha! BUT the whole gym is updated and gorgeous. But of course, I love the CWE so I think this place is perfect. Owners on site...ALWAYS super nice...Never had a problem with me or all my friends that go there. IF you have problems with contracts...make sure you read them....they are not rocket science -Doesnt' matter what gym you join... Anyway...LUV this place...I work out 5 days a week.... more

DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM!!! 11/29/2010

Bottom line: DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM!!! Many things are wrong with this gym but basically the owners are completely dishonest. They have you sign a sketchy contract that says you can cancel your membership at any time, but then if you try to cancel, they make you pay a fee or do not let you cancel at all. They keep billing your card after you have cancelled your membership and if you don't pay them, they charge you late fees and take you to collections and ruin your credit rating. Also, the gym is cramped, hot, has old, run-down equipment. The personal trainers are awful: not professional, and one even sexually harassed me and still they would not refund my money. These guys are crooks. Do yourself a big favor and find another gym!!! more

they won't stop billing me!!!!!!!!!!! 9/19/2007

I had to go into the gym to fill out the paperwork to cancel my membership. I thought that everthing was taken care of but boy was I wrong. This month (Sept 2007) alone they have billed me 3 different times. I don't live in STL anymore and its becoming an on going issue! I've spoke with people in the clubs and the owner but nothing seems to ever get done correctly. Pros: Loved the location when they were at the Chase Cons: bad bussiness people & rude staff more

Some got it - some don't - this club does!! 4/3/2007

Clean club, Good Equipment. Awesome people. I've been a member at many clubs over the years; from the bells and whistles - to the basement dungens and this one is superb. I've read other reviews and quite frankly, have never experienced any of those things. They showed me their programs, I selected mine and I READ THE CONTRACT! No different than any other club I joined. The same people have been working at my club for a long time - no turnover. It opens on time, the equipment is always working, the showers were just replaced. Good people, they like their members. Interesting locations too, mall and hotels. No uniforms, no stuffy ( I'm coming to get your money) corporate feel. If you need a great neighborhood club that's first class I recommend joining. If you don't - I suggest you go somewhere else. I hope this has been helpful. Pros: nice people, nice staff, low key, good equipment, clean, good energy Cons: need more locations more

horrible!!!!! 3/12/2007

outrageous!!!! this place is a scam, extremely rude staff. I told them months ago i wanted to cancel and they keep re-newing my subscription and charging me. i know several other people that have had the same problem Pros: theyre not charging me more Cons: they will not stop charging me and i have told them numerous to cancel more

Dirty Rude Employees 11/5/2006

This gym is not worth any price mine is only $25 amonth. Like the girl above said the owners are scam artists out to rip everyone off. Even their employees. No wonder they have a bad attitude. The classes used to be great but now someone new took over and they stink. I need to give my 60 day notice so I can quit. I never use it anyway. The only upside is a trainer named Valeri and she knows how to train. Pros: Valeri Cons: Many more

Not worth the price 8/23/2006

Equipment needs to be updated. Fair at best. The ""free"" training lessons that came with the membership never happened: the trainer cancelled our appointment 4 times!!! so I stopped juggling my schedule at work and rushing around like a madman trying to get to the gym for an appt that would be cancelled anyway. The classes are ok. Some are very good and intense. Some of the spinning classes my great grandmother would not have gotten a good workout from... The front desk staff are friendly. BUT word to the wise: beware of whatever type of contract you sign with them. I understand they were reported to the Attorney General for trying to scam their members. Overall: you can do better than this gym for its high price. Pros: its a gym so you can get a good workout; not too crowded off peak hours Cons: too expensive for quality of equipment; owners are scam artists more

needs improvement 8/8/2006

I joined about a year ago it was very worth while lately I haven't used my membership. I went in to cancel it I was told there was a 60 day notice which I understood So I said ok. The young man said how do you want to play for the last two months. I said just take it out of my checking account as unsual. He told me he couldn't do it I had to pay the last two months the day I cancelled well I don't have that kind of money right now so I told him forget it. As I walked out the door he said you know your membership isn't cancelled I said it will be . \r I also had to wait 5-7 minuteds to talk to this guy. First three minutes he was waiting on a customer in the snack bar the rest of the time he was on the phone in the snack bar \r THe place isn't worth the 37.95 I am paying My suggestion if you want to join make sure you know all about their cancellation proceedure I guess as always buyer be ware I would get myself in a fix like this again.. I never had this problem with the other health clubs I joined more
