Booze and Burgers 1/7/2012

This bar has a great selection of beer and whiskey. That alone is usually a strong enough selling point for most. However, the burgers here are just as good as the drink selection. They also feature live music regularly so this is not only a good place to get drinks, or grab a bite, or see a band, but you can actually do all three. more

Whiskey... 9/16/2011

That's what they've got a bunch of here. The food's decent, and the bartenders are nice. It's not the biggest space, but it is nice that the booths are kinda set away from the bar. They've got bands playing in their space next door too. more

great live music. 10/7/2009

i've become a bit of a regular at Spike on saturday afternoons to see Calley Bliss sing from 3-6 pm. she's amazing -- a great entertainer + fantastic singer, and she always has a super-talented rotating backup band. plus, no cover! it's not easy to find really talented musicians for free in this city, and this is a perfect way to spend your saturday afternoon. check her out! Pros: great saturday afternoon jazz! more

Good Food! 3/20/2009

Great food, good service, all round great spot for quick and cheap food. Music is pretty decent too. Gets crowded on weekends and late night. Pros: Great burgers, good chicken sandwich, cheap food Cons: Dark, music can sometimes be too loud more

Excellent music vibe 6/20/2008

Checked out the live music side bar at Spike Hill last Friday - cool. Most of the music was top-notch with a really cool friendly vibe from both the drinkers and the staff. Excellent find. Oh yeah and the burger was sick. more

Good beer, good food, good music, friendly service 6/15/2008

Spike hill is one of my favorite spots in Williamsburg. Most importantly It's cool without being pretentious. I have never ever been disappointed with the beer selection and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food (generous portions & delicious). It's perfect for after work and weekends and the booths are wonderful for small groups (feels like you have your own room inside the bar) We've also seen some great live music there. Definitely worth a try if you're in the neighborhood... Pros: Great food/beer/atmosphere more

Worst bar-going experience ever 6/15/2008

Some friends of mine played a show here while touring. There was zero security, not even a measly door guy, so a drunk guy was able to get onto stage and wail into the mike for about 30 minutes until he finally got bored and stumbled off. The sound guy had meanwhile turned off the mike so that when my friends finally reclaimed the stage, the audience couldn't hear any of the vocals. The sound guy had wandered off and so was not around to turn the mike back on. An audience member finally tracked him down to to turn the mike back on, but by this time, my friends only had time for one more song. The only bartender in the back room was wasted and disappeared for stretches at a time. At one point, she returned and began to yell at us in a good long drunken girl rant. She overcharged us a great deal (I'm assuming because she realized that yelling at customers was not a tip-getter). I'm so glad my friends drove all the way up here for this. It makes me embarrassed for Williamsburg. Pros: Absolutely none Cons: The most ridiculously incompetant staff I have ever seen more

a good bar 4/20/2008

I really like this bar. It's nice looking, has a very good beer and scotch selection and the bartenders are pretty cool. The crowd is diverse and they always have a game on.Definitely a good spot to chill and have a couple. more

Spike has live music 1/7/2008

I hadn't been to Spike for awhile, stopped in before the holidays. I was surpised to see that they have expanded and now have a music venue. I saw some great bands. I've been back a few times since then. I also checked out the oyster bar at happy hour on Friday night, enjoyed it. I think the old chef has come back, I think he was serving the oysters. This has always been one of my favorite hang outs. more

The good food is baack! Bestest Guinesss west of the Liffey. 12/20/2007

The great food is baaack! I took a chance last week and was blown away at how good the burger was...and the perfect Guinness didn't do any harm. Pros: Pefect Guiness, great selection of whiskeys, private booths. more

A lot of pressure 5/30/2007

Overall the bar was beautiful. GREAT beer selection. Nice booths that look enjoyable, and an extra ajoined room with space to spare. I came to visit because I just moved in the neighborhood and saw the good reviews. I decided to stop in based on the advertised FREE film showing, HOWEVER... I could not enjoy the film due to a waitress bacially hounding me to buy a beer. I don't like to drink during the work week, and would have most likely been back to visit on the weekend; partly to due to my new apartment and location, but this waitress was rude and ruioned my experience. I did not even stay for the whole film. Sad but true, a pressured enviroment pushed me out the door. Pros: selection Cons: pressure more

Original Chef is back 3/26/2007

Just to let everyone know, the original chef has returned. The food is being brought back to a higher standard and finishing touches are being put on the expanded space next door. Pros: Right by the L train. Cons: Right by the L train. more

bartenders great/make it there before 7 7/26/2006

Beers on tap are great with enough selection and one of the few places in billyburg that serves a killer Radeberger. Bartenders extremely friendly guarunteeing a carte blanche 'Cliff & Norm' experience to any newcomer. Unfortunately the happy hour ends at 7 blasting the pints back to manhattan prices and since their old chef left, food has gone down the tubes. Pros: beer and whiskey selection, bartenders, beautiful wood/authentic english pub atmosphere Cons: food more

best Guiness this side of town 6/25/2006

met up with friends here for the first time some weeks ago and have been going back since. love the beer selection, the bartenders are awesome and the fries were great on a drunken friday night! more

Great head of Guinness!! 8/29/2005

Always on the search for a good hamburger...FOUND IT...beats Mollys (although they have sawdust and fireplace). Irish fry up great (myself I skip the white pudding & double up on the black)...good mix crowd...everybody made to feel welcomed. ALL-IN-ALL...A TIME WISELY INVESTED. Pros: Great service, Friendly, Good happy hour Cons: NOTHING, NOTHING, AGAIN NOTHING more

thank you spike hill 5/27/2005

i am always happy happy at spike hill. the food is exceptional and the waiters are always helpful and seem to actually like there jobs(you know what i mean about hipster willy b service). it is a happy medium for me and my boyfriend. we can eat at spike hill and then go to his fave mugs afterwards... Pros: great food, great service, private booths more

Great Food, Great Hang Out 3/4/2005

The menu looks traditional but the food that comes out is really tasty and gourmet . . . not your average Irish fried food . . . Fish and Chips, burgers, etc with a twist. The vibe is also a refreshing change from the teenie bopper desperate-to-be-cool vibe of Williamsburg. It's the way a bar should be: actually cool, interesting people but relaxed and mellow . . . and unlike most NYC bartenders and waitstaff, the folks at this place are courteous and attentive without being pushy . . . more

a place for the serious drinker 2/10/2005

No tellys, perfect Guinness, AND the food is mighty - in a different league than your average Irish pub, especially yummy brunch, hmmh Irish fry up, nothing better for the morning after cure. They serve real Irish sausages - and don't even get me started on the bartenders.... Pros: no tvs, Amazing Guinness, real Irish sausages more

Respite 2/5/2005

Great selection of beers, especially for the area. If for some horrible reason you're stuck on Bedford -- say perhaps the L is down, or, like me, you decided to pass on Manhattan rent -- Spike Hill shouldn't leave your head spinning with the nauseating odor of the hipster in heat that so pervades the area. Pop in for an interesting brew, and steel your nerves before stumbling back out amongst the hundreds of twentysomethings with haircuts owed to lawnmowers, and sunglasses to people with heads immeasurably larger than their own. Pros: Great beer, Less hipster filth Cons: Bedford smell can --, --creep in front door more

Very authentic but better food 1/25/2005

This place fits the Irish pub atmosphere to a tee. Great drinks, a nice crowd, and many smiles. The food was much better then pub food. It was gourmet pub food. I would highly recommend the pork chop or the Irish Breakfast plate. The chef has specials everynight that are unique and tasty. Also, the selection of beers is probably the best in Brooklyn! more
