Best French Canadian Food 7/27/2010

It is truly an amazing restaurant. The owner/chef really understands French Canadian cooking (I grew up in a French Canadian household). He and his staff are very friendly and are very good at approaching each table. The food was just so amazing too, it even impressed me that they take care of even the tiniest detail in regards to the food. It surprised me that even the vegetables were cooked to perfection (it wasn't undercooked or overcooked). I originally went in there for the poutine, but I am definitely going to go back for the other dishes that we tired. I hope that the next time I go back, the the vibe is still going to be quaint, peaceful and slightly on the romantic side of dining. The price of the food was a little bit expensive but well worth it for the service, ambiance and quality of food. Pros: Service and Food Cons: No parking more

Denied a table 1/31/2009

After reading good reviews , we decided to go to Soleil. We called up up front to make sure we dont have to wait. We were told its a walk in and we should be ok. After arriving there, we were told that they are suddenly expecting a big group and the manager has directed the staff not entertain any more guest. We saw a couple of tables in patio and asked if we could sit there. We were asked how long we were planning to stay and the service will not be quick. We found it a little insulting and rude. more

Great Food, Beautiful Restaurant! 1/20/2009

This little french restaurant instantly became one of my favorites. I went here for dinner, and as soon as I stepped inside, I was struck by the yellow walls, the deep blue with little night stars on the ceiling, and the overall sense of a romance. The pictures on the restaurant's website really do not do it justice! One of the appetizers we had was the cheese fondue, which was not a bowl of melted cheese as we expected, but instead a surprisingly delicious block of crusty-on-the-outside melted-on-the-inside cheese to spread over bread. I would definitely recommend it. I had the their duck (Canard a la Jeff ), and the blend of the sweet orange sauce and the flavorful duck were perfect. My other guest's guests got the Grilled Filet of Salmon and the Steak a la Christine, both of which they ate with delight. The only odd thing was that the side dishes that come with the entrees are either french fries or scalloped potatoes. The french fries were fine, but I would recommend the scalloped potatoes as you can get french fries anywhere. For dessert we had the Raspberry Creme Brulee, which had a very nice top crust smooth raspberry flavor. Our server was also very attentive and nice. The entrees are about $20 each, but well worth it. Pros: Ambience, Food, Parking, Service Cons: Small restaurant more

Excellent food and service! 1/20/2009

I went here for my boyfriend and I's anniversary. It was really romantic. We loved how great the service was. Our server knew the menu so well. He had no problem recommending which appetizer to try and which entree is better than others. We tried escargot which was amazing there!!! My boyfriend absolutely loved his steak with peppercorn sauce. Definitely get the scalloped potatoes! The whole experience was really great and we will definitely return! Pros: service and food Cons: parking more

excellent food, excellent customer service! 10/8/2008

I recently discover this great french bistro offering amazing food for amazing prices! I was very impress with their escargots and their crepes. They have very good crepes for lunches and dinners. The crepe selection is even larger for brunches on weekends. They have a great chocolate crepe for dessert. It was simply delicious. The service is very good and the owner is very inviting. He makes you feel welcome each and every time. I am planning on trying the all you can eat mussels they serve every wednesdays. It's all you can eat with french fries for only 14.95$ a person. The dinning room sitting is very charming and very french. Pros: food, service Cons: closed on mondays more

Eat less but eat Well 3/10/2008

I love anything French. From French kissing to French toast, I appreciate France's ability to make all things so passionate, aesthetically beautiful, and delicious. I came here this past Sunday and ordered the Eggs Benedict, which had poached eggs and Canadian Bacon with hollandaise sauce. It came with a side of fries and salad. I was surprised at how small the portions were compared to some other breakfast places but since I've officially started a new, healthier lifestyle which included eating smaller portions, I was fine with that. The prices are reasonable. Parking on Westwood is not fun. more

Great Experience 2/29/2008

We had a birthday celebration at Soleil, a group of about 10 people. Everything was great. The food was delicious, the waiters were all very nice, helpful, knew everything about the items on the menu, and accommodated food allergies and preferences. I highly recomend Soleil, and we will definitely be back. Pros: the food, the service, the atmosphere Cons: there weren't any more

Amazing service and wonderful food 2/24/2008

Quick seating, even though the restaurant was packed. We were greeted by a wonderful host who came to our table throughout the evening to see how we were doing. He might have been the owner since he knew everything and everyone. He made the whole night a wonderful experience by his warm attitude as well as his great food recommendations. The auto dimming lights were atmospheric and fun. Leave room for dessert, as somehow we ended up with all the desserts that they offer at our table and all were delicious. Great wines for good prices too. We will definitely be back to this restaurant. Wish we had found it sooner. Pros: service, host, food, 1 hour free parking at Borders Cons: street parking more

Perfect Date Spot 2/16/2008

I went last night with my boyfriend and will definitely return again. We started with the parmesan fondue which was really yummy. I wanted the beef Bourguignon but they had just sold out so I opted for the salmon. It was good with really generous portions and my b/f had the chicken and shrimp ravioli which was also good. The best part about this place was definitley the service and the desser!! I coundn't decide on which one to get so I got 2. One was a strawberry/chocolate mousse with rasberry truffle in the middle and the other was a puff pastry with fresh strawberries and bavarian cream filling on top of a strawberry sauce. Yum!!! Pros: Ample parking, reasonable prices, service and dessert Cons: They ran out of the Beef Bourguignon at 8:30 on a Friday night more

Never Heard of Pumpkin Ravioli!!! 11/23/2007

So my cousin proclaims to be a LA pro. She loves everything LA. Me, I live behind the Orange curtain and rarely venture north, certainly never for food, but you have the Getty. So, I asked my cousin where my wife and I should eat after a long day at the museum. Moustache cafe she says. So all is good until i call. Number disconnected. quick PDA....oops, they are closed. Thank you citysearch review who says that they liked Moustach Cafe but Soleil better. This place is amazing. We have traveled much of the world, this is tops! Their steaks, fondue, and especially the pumpkin ravioli is stunning! Ambiance is cozy and the host (owner?) is key to the overall experience. We will drive up and bring our friends. happy happy happy!!!! Pros: Everything was perfect. Cons: None! more

Great food and customer service! 9/30/2007

I saw this restaurant on best of citysearch, so I decided to have my friend's birthday dinner there. The restaurant is nice and cozy, with a warm atmosphere. The host was very nice, he was also surprisingly caring. We ordered our food and me and my friend went out for a smoke, so that my other friend can secretly tell the host to put a candle on our dessert later. He came out and told us that our food was ready on our table! The food was delicious! The special that I had, I forgot the French name of it, but it was a linguini with stripes of filet mignon and mushrooms, was very yummy. It's one of the best French restaurants that I've been to in L.A. Upon the dessert that we ordered, they even gave us a dessert platter with candle on it, on the house! We ended up having all the desserts on the menu, and they were heaven... The raspberry creme brulee was one of the best, not too sweet and creamy, the tart tatin was yummy, and the best, the Ferrillet de freise, it's light, with my favorite fruit, strawberry, and the puff pastry is just so crispy! It was a wonderful meal, and I will go back for sure! Pros: great food and service, convenient parking at borders which is next to the restaruant. more

Best Moules/Frites and great service! 8/13/2007

I was born and raised in Montreal, a city that is known for it's wonderful food! I cannot say how happy I was when I first discovered Soleil! I get to speak my language, enjoy a piece of my culture and eat great food, what more can one ask for?? Pros: Great food, Gracious owner/host and cozy atmoshpere Cons: None... more

Fantastic Dinner 7/22/2007

Having moved from the midwest 6 years ago, we have yet to find a restaurant that really blew us away in LA. Well Soleil did it. Four of us went for a birthday. We didn't know what to expect, had never heard a word about the place. Nothing and I mean nothing was bad about this meal. The owner is a show unto himself. The decor isn't fancy and we liked it that way. All efforts were put into the food. Fantastic! Don't waste your money on Spagos or any of those other fancy named joints that make you wait when the place is empty. Soleil surpassed our expectations 10 fold. Now all that being said, don't go there. If this place is discovered, I won't be able to get a table. Pros: Everything more

Quaint and Delicous 6/29/2007

My family was visiting from out of town and we wanted to try something new. Their love of french cuisine pointed me towards this quaint neighborhood watering hole. The staff was so friendly and accomodating right from the start that it was hard to believe we were still in Los Angeles. The restaurant itself is small but their menu is tasty in a big way. I had the duck and it was to die for! A wonderful experience all around! The family was impressed and we all left stuffed and satisfied. A great place to escape from the typical LA scene and relax with a glass of wine. I will back many times! Pros: Phenominal Food, Wonderful Staff Cons: Parking at the Borders lot more
