Lots of Hype, Little substance 8/24/2009

I got a certificate to eat here. I ate there and they forgot to make my dinner after 45 mins. The manager told me to come back again for another free dinner. She wrote a note on her certificate. Three weeks later I went back to really rude service. I called for a reservation and even the hostess was giving me daggers trying to cash in my certificate. I asked to be seated upstairs and was rudely cut off by the hostess who said, YOU CAN SIT OUTSIDE!. I sat outside and looked at the basic boring menu. I have tasted their food and found other places to be better. I chose the calamari for the appetizer. It was cooked right, really salty and had a citrus dressing on it was was odd. I then ordered steak which was made well. My waitress had vanished and I was begging people for water. They forgot to light my candle and I was sitting in the dark. I was then hitt on by some older women next to me who wanted me to sit with them and enjoy some lady's birthday. They kept staring at me and it was ""AWKWARD"". Then I had to listen to some gay guy who took his father out to dinner who was name dropping all night and bragging about how he played low level sports. It was becoming uncomfortable being in this tight squeezed place with these pretentious people. After the check came I finally saw my waitress again who came out, gave me the check, I gave her my certificate which the manger had written on. She came out shortly afterwards and embarassed me and yelled, CAN I SEE YOUR ID PLEASE! She had to make sure it was me on the certificate to make sure a crime hadn't been committed. Everyone on the deck stopped and stared at me rudely. I was so embarassed I paid the check and left nothing for a tip. I then went to Crazy Mocha for some great cake and relaxed. Your staff is annoying and arrogant. Don't hire cocky college girls who want to give people attitude. Pros: Close to Crazy Mocha who has big tasty cake and cool bars Cons: Bad service, boring menu more

Good drinks, overprized appetizers 12/21/2008

Good selection of cocktails and wine, but overprized appetizers in the lounge. Seating is sparse on the weekends. more

Overpriced Asian and Skimpy Portions 11/11/2008

This is another one of those common ""As seen on the food channel"" menus. It has those silly living large menu prices. Skimpy portions with various sauces dripped across the entree. The puny rolls and the meager salad made us laugh. The service was slow and another couple waited 10 minutes for after seating and no one bothered to take their drink order. They departed the restaurant quite unhappy; seemed like their first date too! Pros: Nice Decor Cons: Over-priced asian food and slow to slower service more

Great dining, hip vibe, neighborhood feel 3/12/2008

Although the menu can be a bit sparse, they switch it up often enough to keep things fresh. The portions can be a bit on the small side for the price, but the food is always excellent and the decor is fantastic. The wait staff is always attentive and spot-on, and the kitchen likes to send out goodies at random, which I've never really gotten anywhere else. Considering the quality of the food, the prices are far from unreasonable. This has become my personal favorite Big Burrito place, and I really enjoy going there. On the down-side, the crowd can tend a bit much toward the yuppie end, which can be either offputting or a positive, depending on.. well, how much of a yuppie you are. Bar tends to be filled with aging singles, especially on the weekends, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend drinking there if you're under, say, 30. But overall, great food, reasonable prices gorgeous atmosphere. Pros: Great menu, excellent food, wonderful service, amazing decor, great neighborhood Cons: Sparse parking, so trendy the crowd looks like it came out of a cell phone commercial more

A good place to eat/drink/talk with friends. 3/7/2008

Interesting menu, nice bar, better than average food. This Shadyside standard is well run and always clean (not a given in Pittsburgh) with good service. more

AMAZING 4/22/2007

I cannot even put into words how amazing the food is at Soba. I could eat here almost every day and never get sick of the food. The restaurant is delicious, the service wonderful, and the ambience perfect for a date. I have been here one-on-one with my boyfriend but also for a family birthday dinner. Even for drinks and a quick appetizer, there is a beautiful lounge with chic chairs and plentiful seating. My favorite dishes there are the Crispy Tofu and the Spinach and Mushroom Dumplings. Both are appetizers and I refuse to eat at Soba without ordering both. Bob Z is the best waiter there. Make your way to Soba for ANY occassion, though I wouldn't suggest bringing young kids. Oh, and if you sign up at BigBurrito dot com, you will get a free dinner for your birthday! Pros: absolutely amazing food, great service, shockingly beautiful restaurant Cons: limited parking, a little pricey more

Definitely Recommended 2/16/2007

One of my favorites. Chic decor. Asian influenced menu with bold ingrediants and serious taste! Good venue for large groups or intimate gatherings. Knowledgable and friendly staff. I also highly recommend the lounge/bar for cocktails/wine and great appetizers! more

One of my favorites. 11/22/2006

Soba is one of my favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. I have my birthday dinner at Soba every year (sign up for a free birthday dinner at bigburrito's website). My favorite is the filet - whatever the steak sauce is, it is delicious! There are many great appetizers as well. Be sure to go early for cocktails in their lounge too - very trendy. Soba is an upscale restaurant nestled in the great neighborhood of Shadyside. more

Very chic 11/6/2006

Very chic restaurant - very new york! The menu is unique. I would recommend this as a great restaurant for drinks and appetizers but I would skip the meals. more

Great Calamari 3/29/2006

My friend & I had a wondeful dining experience here. I would not recommend brining children, as I brought my nephew along once, and he was very displeased, along with all the diners surrounding us. They have some amazing calamari, and drinks. If you aren't starving I would recommend getting an appetizer and sharing an entree as the food is very pricey. Overall a great place. Pros: Food, Trendy Cons: Pricey more

Good-not great 8/19/2005

Pleasant experience although don't bring children. I asked when making my reservation if it was child friendly to which I received a ""yes"", but this seems to be too quiet and formal for young children. more

Phenomenal 5/16/2004

Definetely the best of the Big Burrito chain. They're all excellent actually, but I love the asian flair in a classy atmosphere at Soba. The service is fantastic. Very friendly and professional. Their appetizers are some of the best around. Also a decent veggie selection for those of you who are looking for that. It is pricey but worth it. Oh and you have to check out the bathrooms...very eclectic. Pros: Food, Service, Wine selection more

What happened to this place? 1/7/2003

Prior to the fire, I had the pleasure of eating at Soba twice and everything was amazing. Great food, great atmosphere and reasonable prices. But I went back there about 4 months ago and I was shocked by how how bad my experience was. The appetizer, some sort of raviolis, was very small and bland tasting. But the price of entrees doubled! $20 for some crappy stir fry and if you want steak, it'll cost you at least $35.. I won't be going there again. more

Excellent menu 12/8/2002

Excellent foods - appetizers, dinners and desserts... I love the drink menu and the atmosphere is really perfect for a date or a night out with friends. I love the Soba... Definitely worth trying. Pros: Delicious food, Nice portion size, Excellent drink menu more

Best Drinks 8/18/2002
